The Japanese occupation of Singapore in World War II took place from 1942 to 1945 , following the fall of the British colony on 15 February 1942. Military forces of the Empire of Japan occupied it after defeating the combined Australian, British, Indian, and Malayan garrison in the Battle of Singapore. The occupation was to become a major turning point in the histories of several nations, including those of Japan, Britain, and the then-colonial state of Singapore. Singapore was renamed Syonan-to(昭南島,Shōnan-tō), meaning "Light of the South".
Singapore was officially returned to British colonial rule on 12 September 1945, following the formal signing of the surrender instrument at the Municipal Building.
Events leading to the occupation
The Japanese captured all of Malaya during the Malayan Campaign in a bit more than two months. The garrison defending Singapore surrendered on 15 February 1942, only a week after the invasion of the island commenced. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill called the fall of Singapore "the worst disaster and largest capitulation in British history".
The Singapore dollar or dollar (Malay: Ringgit Singapura, sign: $; code: SGD) is the official currency of Singapore. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively S$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is divided into 100 cents.
Between 1845 and 1939, Singapore used the Straits dollar.
This was replaced by the Malayan dollar, and, from 1953, the Malaya and British Borneo dollar, which were issued by the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya and British Borneo.
Singapore continued to use the common currency upon joining Malaysia in 1963, but only two years after Singapore's expulsion and independence from Malaysia in 1965, the monetary union between Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei broke down.
Singapore established the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Singapore, on 7 April 1967 and issued its first coins and notes. Nevertheless, the Singapore dollar was exchangeable at par with the Malaysian ringgit until 1973, and interchangeability with the Brunei dollar is still maintained.
Pearl smuggler Matt Gordon (Fred MacMurray) finds romance with Linda Grahame (Ava Gardner) just before the start of World War II. He proposes to her, and she accepts. However, when the Japanese attack Singapore, the church where she is waiting to marry him is bombed; Gordon searches frantically in the wreckage, but cannot find her. He is forced to sail away on his schooner.
With the end of the war, Gordon returns after five years and is met by Deputy Commissioner Hewitt (Richard Haydn), who is convinced he has returned for a hidden cache of pearls. So are Gordon's old criminal associates, Mr. Mauribus (Thomas Gomez) and his underling Sascha Barda (George Lloyd). Mauribus offers to buy the pearls, but Gordon denies he has any.

The Unknown Truth of Singapore Sook Ching Massacre
On 18th February, 1942, the Japanese army issued a notice asking all Chinese men aged between 18 and 50 in Singapore to go to ‘screening centers’ to collect the ‘Good Citizen Certificate’, yet this was just the beginning of a nightmare. 76-year-old Loh Weng Kee recalled emotionally that his father was ‘missing’ in this ‘screening’ massacre, known as the Sook Ching Massacre.
According to the National Library of Singapore, at least 50,000 Chinese were killed by the Japanese forces during the massacre.

Japanese breakthrough
The withdrawal of Australian troops from the Kranji enabled the Imperial Japanese tank-armored forces to land ashore.
Alexandra Hospital massacre
At about 13:00 in 14 February 1942, the Japanese raided into the Alexandra Barracks Hospital and killed up to 50 soldiers, including some undergoing surgery. Doctors and nurses were also killed.
Fall of Singapore
Throughout the night of 14/15 February the Japanese continued to press against the Allied perimeter, but the line largely held. However, the situation was getting worse due to badly damaged water system, shortage of supplies and food. Petrol for military vehicles was running low and the anti-aircraft guns were almost out of ammunition.

On the 15th February 1942, Imperial Japanese forces captured the British stronghold of Singapore. Not only was Singapore Britain's economic base of operations for east-Asia but it was also key to their defensive strategy of the other commonwealth countries in the region. This embarrassing defeat was so surprising that 80,000 troops were taken prisoner.

After WWI, the British constructed a huge naval base at Sembawang, but the battle fleet could not be housed there due to economic reasons. As a compromise, they would only send their main battle fleet from the Atlantic to the Asia-Pacific when a threat was imminent. This was known as the Singapore Strategy.
Watch the first of our four-part mini-series on the ‘Fall of Singapore’, to see why this plan was flawed.
