In today's video, we delve into the Xiu Xiu iceberg. And there's A LOT to unpack.
Xiu Xiu is a highly influential indie band whose sound casts a wide stroke, producing bodies of work that encompass post-punk, Korean folk, and brutally harsh noise rock. They are a notoriously difficult band to get into, courtesy of the abrasive and terrifying soundscapes they produce (including experimental noises from 8-bit video game consoles), along with frontman Jamie Stewart's tragic and absurdist lyrics inspired by Joy Division and novelist Dennis Cooper.

Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu, HEXA) - Against The Clock
Jamie Stewart makes a track in 10 minutes.
LA-born Jamie Stewart has been the driving force behind US experimental band Xiu Xiu since 2002. In that time they've released dozens of records, collaborated with noise titan Merzbow and Grouper, and even covered the music of Twin Peaks.
In short, Xiu Xiu have never stood still, consistently challenging even their own fans' expectations of their music. It's this tireless search for new ways to craft music that makes frontman Stewart a perfect Against The Clock guest.
Stewart took a unique approach to making a track in 10 minutes, using modular synth and lots of other hardware. Trust us, this is a wild one.
Xiu Xiu's latest album The Air Force, DRUNK COMMENTARY is out now.

Xiu Xiu Makes the Most Horrendous Synth Sounds Humanly Possible
Toting an extensive range of sonic machines, experimental group Xiu Xiu’s driving members Angela Seo and Jamie Stewart recently paid a visit to our studio to give us a lesson on intentionally crafting “the most disgusting sounds” possible. Toting an extensive range of sonic machines, experimental group Xiu Xiu’s driving members Angela Seo and Jamie Stewart recently paid a visit to our studio to give us a lesson on intentionally crafting “the most disgusting sounds” possible. With their eclectic assortment of test equipment oscillators, a towering Eurorack modular system, effects pedals, and more, prepare your eardrums to be blessed (or barraged, depending on your inclination for harsh electronic sounds) by the pummeling frequencies contained in this video.
With some of our favorite pieces like the Make Noise DPO, Verbos Harmonic Oscillator, and the aptly named Total Sonic Annihilation from Death by Audio, Angela and Jamie show off a few setups for building up immensely destructive audio. Their valuable insight into curating feedback and noise with intention offers plenty of valuable tips and considerations for prospective explorers of the unpredictable and harsher worlds of sound design.

Xiu Xiu was born on a dance floor, arriving alone at the club and going home alone from the club.
That night the first Xiu Xiu song, Jennifer Lopez, was recorded. Its line, “is it tough to watch, Friday after Friday!?,” began what Xiu Xiu was going to try to say. The songs would always be about specific events in the personal lives of the band, the people close to them, and about the social and economic politics that effect and deform subjugated life from everywhere in this wobbling, wreck of a solar system.
The music is drawn from British post punk and synth pop, modern Western classical, noise and experimental musics, Asian percussion musics, American folk, torch singers, house, techno and 1950s rock n roll.
Starting in isolation in San Jose, California in 2002, Xiu Xiu has relentlessly toured all over the world since.

Not a word from your lips
You just took for granted that I want to skinny dip
A quick hit, that's your game
But I'm not a piece of meat, stimulate my brain
Night is young, so are we
Let's get to know each other better, slow and easily
Take my hand, let's hit the floor
Shake your body to the music, maybe then you'll score
[Pre-Chorus]
So come on, baby, won't you show some class?
Why you want to move so fast?
[Chorus]
We don't have to take our clothes off (Mmm...)
To have a good time, oh no
We could dance and party all night
(All night, we could dance all night)
And drink some cherry wine, uh-huh
We don't have to take our clothes off (No, no, no)
To have a good time, oh no
We could dance and party all night (All night)
And drink some cherry wine, uh-huh
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, an
[Verse 2]
Just slow down if you want me
A man wants to be approached cool and romantically
I've got needs just like you
Gimme conversations, good vibrations, through and through
[Pre-Chorus]
So come on baby, won't you show some class?
Why you want to move so fast?
[Chorus]
We don't have to take our clothes off (No, no)
To have a good time, oh no
We could dance and party all night (all night, all night)
And drink some cherry wine, uh-huh (Oh, no, no, oh)
We don't have to take our clothes off
To have a good time, oh no (A good time, oh no)
We could dance and party all night (Party, all night)
And drink some cherry wine, uh-huh (Cherry wine, uh-huh)
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, an
[Bridge]
Yes, I want your body
And we don't have to rush the affair
So you say, you wanna taste my wine?
Not yet
[Pre-Chorus]
So come on, baby, won't you show some class?
Why you wanna move so fast? (Oh-oh)
[Chorus]
We don't have to take our clothes off (Oh no)
To have a good time, oh no
We could dance and party all night (Dance and party all night)
And drink some cherry wine, uh-huh (We don't have)
We don't have to take our clothes off (Clothes off, no)
To have a good time, oh no (Oh no)
We could dance and party all night (Dance and party, yeah)
And drink some cherry wine, uh-huh (Cherry wine)
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, na (Oh-oh)
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, na (Na-na, na-na)
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, na (Oh-oh, oh-oh)
Na, na, na, na, na-na-na, na, na (Oh...)
We don't have to take our clothes off
To have a good time, oh no
We could dance and party all night (All night, all night long)
And drink some cherry wine, uh-huh (Cherry wine, cherry wine)
We don't have to take our clothes off (No...)
To have a good time, oh no
We could dance and party all night (Dance and party, yeah)
