John Thomas Murphy (9 December 1888–13 May 1965), known as J. T. Murphy or Jack Murphy, was an Englishtrade union organiser and Communist.
Biography
Early years
J.T. Murphy, best known by his nickname of "Jack," was born in 1888 and grew up near Sheffield and became a metal-worker. He became active in the Amalgamated Society of Engineers and was active in the Sheffield wing of the Shops' Stewards Movement, which emerged in engineering factories during the First World War.
Political career
Murphy joined the Socialist Labour Party (SLP) in 1916 and stood as a candidate in the 1918 General Election for the Gorton constituency in Manchester. He then participated in the communist unity discussions, and as a result split from the SLP, joining the Communist Party of Great Britain at its formation in 1920. He was a member of the Central Committee until he was expelled from the party in 1932. He was active in the National Minority Movement, a Communist-led united front within the trade unions, from its formation in 1924. In 1925 Murphy was one of twelve CPGB officials imprisoned for seditious libel and incitement to mutiny.
He started his career with Wigan Warriors, making his Super League debut against Bradford Bulls in 2012, during which he also scored his first Super League try. For the 2013 season he joined Salford on loan where, ironically, his first appearance was against the Warriors. He spent the 2014 season on dual-registration with Workington Town, and signed a permanent deal with the club in October 2014.
Murphy was a former member of the Irish Republican Army who had been interned in the 1940s. At the time of his election, he was an unemployed carpenter. He was the candidate of the Unemployed Protest Committee (UPC), which had been formed on 12 January 1957. He resigned his seat on 13 May 1958 in protest at the indifference of the main political parties to the plight of the unemployed. After his resignation he subsequently emigrated with his family to Canada but returned to Ireland in 1964. He died on 11 July 1984.
Early years
Murphy was born in 1920 at the back of Synge Street, Dublin. He was the second youngest son of a carpenter and had five brothers and five sisters. His father, a well-known athlete who won the all-Ireland walking championship in 1903, was active in the republican movement and was a founder-member of the National Union of Woodworkers. Murphy joined Fianna Éireann at the age of 10. Up to the age of 14 he attended St Mary's National School, Rathmines, and then started work as an apprentice carpenter, while attending Bolton Street Technical College, now Dublin Institute of Technology in the evenings. He became a member of the Irish Republican Army at 16. He was also an active trade union member from an early age as demonstrated when, as a carpenters apprentice, he became one of the leaders of a strike on the River Liffey Reservoir Scheme (popularly known as the Poulaphouca Scheme). The strike lasted several months until only three of the original committee remained, with Murphy being one of them.
