Jülich (modernly pronounced [ˈjyːlɪç]; in old spellings also known as Guelich or Gülich, cf. Dutch:Gulik, cf. French:Juliers) is a town in the district of Düren, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Jülich is well known as location of a world-famous research centre, the Forschungszentrum Jülich. As a border region between the competing powers in the Lower Rhine and Meuse areas, the town and the Duchy of Jülich played a historic role from the Middle Ages up to the 17th century.
Geography
Jülich stands in the Rur valley on the banks of the river Rur. The town is bordered by the town of Linnich in the north, the municipality of Titz in the northeast, the municipality of Niederzier in the southeast, the municipality of Inden in the south, and by the municipality of Aldenhoven in the west. Its maximum size is 13.3km from east to west and 10.9km from north to south. The highest point in Jülich is in Bourheim, 110 m above sea level (excepting Sophienhöhe, an extensive artificial mountain made up of overburden from a nearby open-pit lignite mine, the Tagebau Hambach). The lowest point, 70 m above sea level, lies in the borough of Barmen.

Jülich - Jülich in Motion
The market is the centre of the town. With the town hall, the former Jesuit church and the Catholic parish church on the neighbouring Kirchplatz, urban life is concentrated here. The new world revolves around the market square, the street spaces change in function and appearance. Children still play in the streets, soldiers also regularly march through the town, and on high holidays processions lend the public space a mood of devotion. But shops with shop windows are becoming more important, and cars are increasingly shaping life and the cityscape. The streets are paved, with pavement and roadway, accompanied by lanterns, adapted to traffic and developed.

The video is a result of a European project called UrbanSpaces, which focuses on the history of the Interwar period in the participating twin towns. The towns examined are Bracknell, Leverkusen, Ljubljana, Jülich, Oulu, Schwedt, Raciborz and Villeneuve-d'Ascq. The project's main goal was to explore the history of the Interwar period in all towns and to present the results in a 2-3 minute video that would be interesting to both younger and older learners. All of the videos are part of our film kit, which gives educators the tools to include said videos in their lessons, and they can adapt the videos based on their needs, ideas, and wishes. We hope you enjoy these videos as much as we enjoyed making them. Let us learn and educate in a fun manner through different languages, cultures, and history.

We get up early and we work all day We put our time in 'cause we like to stay up All night long All night long We keep on grinnin' 'til the weekend comes Just a pinch between your cheek and gums All night long All night long Start in the morning and get the job done Take care of business and we have some fun All night long All night long We like a long neck and a good old song Turn it up and then we'll sing along Sing along Oh, we're stayin' up all night long (instrumental) All night long All night long All night long
