Twelver (Arabic:اثنا عشرية, Athnā‘ashariyyah or Ithnā‘ashariyyah; Persian:شیعه دوازده امامی, pronounced[ʃiːʔe-je dævɑzdæh emɑmiː]) Shia Islam or Imamiyyah (Arabic:إمامية) is the largest branch of ShiaIslam. The term Twelver refers to its adherents' belief in twelve divinely ordained leaders, known as the Twelve Imams, and their belief that the last Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi, lives in occultation and will reappear as the promised Mahdi.
Twelvers believe that the Twelve Imams are the spiritual and political successors to the Islamic prophetMuhammad. According to the theology of Twelvers, the Twelve Imams are exemplary human individuals who not only rule over the community in justice, but also are able to keep and interpret sharia and the esoteric meaning of the Quran. The words and deeds (Sunnah) of Muhammad and the Imams are a guide and model for the community to follow; as a result, Muhammad and the Imams must be free from error and sin, known as Ismah or infallibility, and must be chosen by divine decree, or nass, through Muhammad.
In this episode, I attempt to give you an overview of the vast and complex Twelver school of Shi'ism across history.

Twelver Shi'ism in the Eyes of a Non-Muslim
In Sunni-Shia polemics, Sunnis and Shias often end up debating minute theological, historical and jurisprudential technicalities such that they often overlook the bigger picture. The implications of entire historical narratives are thus neglected as polemicists passionately debate specific details from those narratives. However, the question that must be asked is: how do such narratives, at the end of the day, depict the Prophet and Islam? In this video, we shall dissect Shia Islam from the neutral perspective of a non-Muslim bystander.

When Was Twelver Aqeedah Established? | Sayyid Kamal al-Haydari
Link to original video: https://youtu.be/-AOVZJPt9vc
For those who don't understand Arabic, this is Ayatullah Sayyid Kamaal al Haidari pointing out how traditional Twelver Divine Imaamah, (and its four principle claims of Nass (Divine Appointment through Prophetic/Imami designay), Ismah (infallibilty), Imams being 12 in number, and the 12th one being necessarily alive) was not codified into Aqeedah until the time of Shaykh Al Mufeed (d. 413 AH).
And the claim of Shaykh Mufeed was that whoever denies any of this is not only outside the fold of the Shia Mazhab, but the Deen itself, and is a Kaafir, thereby proving Ayatullah Sayyid Kamaal al Haidari's point about the evil nexus between Divine Imaamah and Takfeer of the non 12er Shia Ummah.

In other words, the inescapable corollary of believing in the false doctrine of Divine Imaamah for the 12 Imams is Takfeer of the entire non 12ver Shia Ummah for rejecting allegedly Divine Guides - an attrocious and unconscionable stance indeed.
The Ayatullah also then emphasises how such an understanding of Aqeedah (i.e. the Mufeedian theory of Divine Imaamah which is popular among 12ers today) was never heard from Imam Sadiq (as) or supported by him.
Conclusion: Ayatullah Sayyid Kamaal al Haidari says: The mainstream traditional 12ver Shia belief of Divine Imaamah is merely the Mufeedian reading/theory of Imaamah, which was neither endorsed by Imam Sadiq (as), nor was it standardised or mainstreamed until the time of Shaykh al Mufeed (d. 413 AH).
