Italian President Sergio Mattarella agreed to a new round of consultations with party leaders Tuesday in an effort to resolve Italy's political crisis. Speaking to reporters in Rome Thursday, two days after the collapse of the country's populist government, the president said if no coalition wins a parliamentary approval, he could form a caretaker government or hold early elections. VOA's Zlatica Hoke reports Italian political leaders have started negotiations in an effort to avert a snap vote.

(5 Mar 2018) The leader of the 5-Star Movement declared that his party is the "absolute winner" in Italy's national election.
Luigi Di Maio added that the party feels "a great responsibility to give a government to Italy."
The 5-Star movement tripled the number of parliamentarians over the last election in 2013, when it was also the first party but only by a hair's breadth and the government went to the Democratic Party.
Di Maio, said the party's strong showing throughout Italy means that it should run the next government.
He spoke less than an hour after the head of the League made the same claim on the part of the center-right coalition, which collectively has more votes than the 5-Stars.
The assertions underline the difficulties that President Sergio Mattarella will have in tapping someone to form a government, as neither of the blocs has enough to govern alone.
Speaking at a hotel in Rome, an exuberant Di Maio thanked the "11 million Italians who voted for us."
Di Maio said his group feels "a responsibility" towards the international community, European citizens and investors.
Italy's stock market is down after the populist and stridently anti-European Union political forces did well in Sunday's parliamentary election, though no single group got enough support to govern alone.
The FTSE MIB index in Milan was down 1.2 percent, on a day when global markets were trading higher.
Analysts say the strong showing by the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement and the rightwing League party means it's less likely the next Italian government will try to make the economy more pro-business.
It is more likely to increase government spending, which could help growth but could also add to public debt, which is already above a worryingly high 130 percent of GDP.

The EP President visited the Italian PM in Rome. Their entente suggests that their European parties, the EPP and the ECR, might form an alliance next June. Meanwhile, Salvini (ID) is pushing to make it centre-right only – but that might not be possible
Roberta Metsola meets Giorgia Meloni. On Wednesday, the European Parliament President was welcomed by the Italian Prime Minister in Rome after touring the country’s South. The duo discussed the main international and European current affairs dossiers, according to an official communiqué, touching upon Ukraine and the Middle East as well as migration, EU enlargement, the review of the EU Multiannual Financial Framework and security and defence.
Ms Metsola, a leading member of the European People’s Party, was also aiming to get closer to the Italian citizens ahead of the EU elections in 2024. “We cannot take our constituents for granted. This is the biggest challenge we will have,” she said.
The growing entente. There have been hints of a growing entente between Ms Metsola’s EPP and the European Conservatives and Reformists, the group led by the Italian PM, with a view on electing the next EU Commission. Some within the EPP are wary of the ECR’s more conservative tilt, but others recognise it as a natural, up-and-coming partner.
“I cannot speak for [PM Meloni], but I know [her] very well,” Ms Metsola said while live on Rai 1 regarding the possible alliance. “She is a very strong pro-EU woman. And that is why we count on her. And I will count not only on her friendship but on her leadership.”
Reasons to get closer. The EPP has been steadily losing power in European capitals, going from 17 affiliated State leaders in 2014 to just 7 in 2023. Meanwhile, Ms Meloni’s electoral success in September and consistent approval rating indicate that conservative parties in Italy – and elsewhere in Europe – might regain ground in the 2024 elections.
Salvini’s stomach aches. At the moment, this prospect seems incompatible with the approach suggested by Identity and Democracy, a far-right EP group led by Matteo Salvini’s League. At the group’s summit last Sunday, he called for a centre-right alliance – modelled after Italy’s government – and pushed to leave other parties out.
On Monday, while in Brussels, he accused Ms Metsola of “flirting with the left, including those who led to the problems in the EU today.”
“’I am convinced that only the pro-European centre can provide solutions for the future of the EU,” she replied, adding that she did not take criticism personally.
His allies lean onto the other side. Mr Salvini’s Italian government allies do not look ready to strike such an alliance at the EU level. While the former criticised Ms Metsola, Raffaele Fitto – the Italian Minister for European Affairs and one of PM Meloni’s closest allies – walked alongside her in Lecce, in Southern Italy, touting the ongoing dialogue as “an opportunity to explain what we are doing, but above all, what we must do for the future.”
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani – head of the other leading governing partner Forza Italia and Vice Chairman of the EPP – has repeatedly ruled out working with some ID members, including Geert Wilders (Party for Freedom), Marine Le Pen (National Rally), and Tino Chrupalla (Alternative for Germany).

"This year Italy will take over the presidency of the G7, it will be a very important year because we will be able to see the premier with her ministers leading these countries," she added.

"I am convinced that only the pro-European centre can provide solutions for the future of the European union," she added.

Anthem of Christian Democracy (Italy) - O bianco fiore
"O bianco fiore" ("English: O White Flower") is a traditional anthem of Italian Christian workers and Christian Democracy.
The anthem was written in 1906 by Dario Flori, a priest and supporter of trade union Catholics in Tuscany. The anthem was adopted by the Italian People's Party, "O bianco fiore" later became the official anthem of the Christian Democracy.
Others attribute the hymn to priest Amilcare Berzieri.
In 2000, an electoral alliance named "Biancofiore" was formed, which brought together the Christian Democratic Centre and United Christian Democrats parties (heirs to Christian Democracy) to contest the 2001 Italian general election.
Together, Francesco Cossiga and Pier Ferdinando Casini improvised a duet singing the hymn in 2009.

Christian Democracy (Italian: Democrazia Cristiana, DC) was a Christian democratic political party in Italy. The DC was founded on 15 December 1943 in the Italian Social Republic (Nazi-occupied Italy) as the ideal successor of the Italian People's Party, which had the same symbol, a crusader shield (scudo crociato). As a Catholic-inspired, centrist, catch-all party comprising both centre-right and centre-left political factions, the DC played a dominant role in the politics of Italy for fifty years, and had been part of the government from soon after its inception until its final demise on 16 January 1994 amid the Tangentopoli scandals. Christian Democrats led the Italian government continuously from 1946 until 1981. The party was nicknamed the "White Whale" (Italian: Balena bianca) due to its huge organization and official color. During its time in government, the Italian Communist Party was the largest opposition party.

The Godfather Part II, which followed in 1974, became the first sequel to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Highly regarded by critics, the film brought Coppola three more Academy Awards: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture, and made him the second director (after Billy Wilder) to be so honored three times for the same film. The Conversation, which Coppola directed, produced and wrote, was released that same year, winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His next film, Apocalypse Now (1979), which notoriously had a lengthy and strenuous production, was widely acclaimed for its vivid depiction of the Vietnam War. The film won the Palme d'Or, making Coppola one of only eight filmmakers to have won that award twice. His best-known films released since the start of the 1980s are the dramas The Outsiders and Rumble Fish (both 1983), the crime dramas The Cotton Club (1984) and The Godfather Part III (1990), and the romantic-horror film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) based on the novel of the same name. A number of Coppola's relatives and children have become famous actors and filmmakers in their own right: his sister is the actress Talia Shire, his daughter Sofia Coppola and granddaughter Gia Coppola are directors, and the actors Jason Schwartzman and Nicolas Cage are his nephews. Coppola resides in Napa, California, and since the 2010s has been a vintner and owns a family-brand as well as a winery of his own. (Wikipedia)

STORYLINE:
Former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi faced rebellion from his own party on October 1st 2013 ahead of a crucial parliament session.
Several party members went to see their leader on Tuesday in the Grazioli Palace residence, among them vice premier Angelino Alfano, one of the so called 'dissidents'.
Premier Enrico Letta could have the numbers to form a new government," said American University Political Science Professor James Walston.
Last weekend Berlusconi demanded that the five ministers from his political party quit Letta's government.
He asked them to resign in a show of solidarity ahead of a Senate vote to strip him of his seat because of his tax-fraud conviction.
Berlusconi demanded at the weekend that the five ministers from his Freedom People party (PDL) quit Letta's government.
He asked them to resign in a show of solidarity ahead of a Senate vote to strip him of his seat because of his tax-fraud conviction and prison sentence.
There are fears the country would suffer weeks or months of political uncertainty that could derail its attempts to get the economy back on track.
Memories are still fresh of this year's inconclusive elections, which left politicians squabbling for two months before Letta's unusual left-right coalition was cobbled together in April.
An unstable Italian economy could, some argued, revive the European financial crisis, which has lain dormant for months.
In August Italy's top criminal court upheld the tax fraud conviction against Berlusconi, in a case dealing with acquisition of film rights for his media empire.
It also upheld his four-year prison sentence.

Ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi addressed his supporters on November 27th, declaring his expulsion from the Italian Senate as a "day of mourning for democracy."
He was speaking shortly after he was expelled by the Italian Senate over his conviction for tax fraud.
Even though he won't hold a seat in Parliament for at least six years, the 77-year-old Berlusconi pledged to remain involved in politics and urged his followers not to despair.
He called it a "bitter day," after the Senate voted on whether to remove Berlusconi from the chamber, stemming from a 2012 law banning anyone sentenced to more than two years in prison from holding or running for public office for six years.
Three-time ex-Premier Berlusconi told the crowd of supporters that today the opposition "Make a toast, because they've managed to put an adversary, and they'd actually say an enemy, in front of their firing squad. It's a day they've been waiting for, for 20 years."
Italy's high court on August 1st upheld Berlusconi's tax fraud conviction, and four-year prison term stemming from his Mediaset empire's purchase of television rights to US films.
Berlusconi claims he didn't receive a fair trial and that the judges were biased.
He has professed his innocence and plans to appeal.

Lyrics:
Gloria, you're always on the run now
Running after somebody
You gotta get him somehow
I think you've got to slow down
Before you start to blow it
I think you're headed for a breakdown
So be careful not to show it
You really don't remember
Was it something that he said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
Gloria, don't you think you're fallin'?
If everybody wants you
Why isn't anybody callin'?
You don't have to answer
Leave them hangin' on the line
Oh-oh-oh, calling Gloria
Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number
(Gloria) I think they got the alias
(Gloria) That you've been living under
(Gloria) But you really don't remember
Was it something that they said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
A-ha-ha, a-ha-ha
Gloria, how's it gonna go down?
Will you meet him on the main line
Or will you catch him on the rebound?
Will you marry for the money
Take a lover in the afternoon?
Feel your innocence slipping away
Don't believe it's comin' back soon
And you really don't remember
Was it something that he said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number
(Gloria) I think they got the alias
(Gloria) That you've been living under
(Gloria) But you really don't remember
Was it something that they said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
(Gloria, Gloria, Gloria, Gloria, Gloria)

Lyrics:
[Intro]
Yeah, sendin' this one out
To my man, Killer B
No doubt indeed
Where that weed?
Nomsayin'?
That old real shit
[Verse 1]
There's a war goin' on outside no man is safe from
You could run, but you can't hide forever
From these streets that we done took
You walkin' with your head down, scared to look
You shook, ‘cause ain't no such things as halfway crooks
They never around when the beef cooks in my part of town
It's similar to Vietnam
Now we all grown up and old, and beyond the cops' control
They better have the riot gear ready
Tryin' to bag me and get rocked steady
By the MAC one-double, I touch you
And leave you with not much to go home with
My skin is thick, ‘cause I be up in the mix of action
If I'm not at home, puffin' lye, relaxin'
New York got a nigga depressed
So I wear a slug-proof underneath my Guess
God bless my soul
Before I put my foot down and begin to stroll
Into the drama I built
And all unfinished beef, you will soon be killed
Put us together, it's like mixin' vodka and milk
I'm goin out blastin', takin' my enemies with me
And if not, they scarred, so they will never forget me
Lord, forgive me
The Hennessy got me not knowin' how to act
I'm fallin' and I can't turn back
Or maybe it's the words from my man Killa Black
That I can't say so it's left a untold fact
Until my death, my goal's to stay alive
Survival of the fit, only the strong survive
[Chorus]
Yo, yo, we livin' this 'til the day that we die
Survival of the fit, only the strong survive
(We still livin' it)
We livin' this 'til the day that we die
Survival of the fit, only the strong survive
(Thug life, we still livin' it)
We livin' this 'til the day that we die
Survival of the fit, only the strong survive
(We still livin' it)
We livin' this 'til the day that we die
Survival of the fit, only the strong survive
[Verse 2]
I'm trapped, in between two worlds, tryin' to get dough
Y'know, when the dough get low the jewels go
But never that, as long as fiends smoke crack
I'll be on the block hustlin', countin' my stacks
No doubt, watchin' my back and proceed with caution
Five-oh lurkin', no time to get lost in the system
Niggas usin' fake names to get out quick
My brother did it and got bagged with two ounces
I live a world where squads hit the block hard
Ask my man Twin when he got bagged
That fucked me up, God, but shit happens for a reason
You find out who's your true peoples
When you're upstate bleedin'
You can't find a shorty to troop your bid with you
Hit with a two to four is difficult
Wild on the streets, I try to maintain
Tight with my loot, ‘cause hoes like to run game
Some niggas like to trick, but I ain't with that trickin' shit
I'm like a Jew, savin' dough so I can big whip
Pushin' a Lex, now I'm set, ready to jet
No matter how much loot I get
I'm stayin' in the projects forever
Jakes on the blocks we out-clever
If beef, we never separate and pull together
When worse comes to worst, my peoples come first
Try to react and get them motherfuckin' feelings hurt
My crew's all about loot—fuck lookin' cute!
I'm strictly Timb boots and Army certified suits
Puffin L's, laid back, enjoyin' the smell
In the Bridge, gettin' down, it ain't hard to tell
You better realize
[Chorus]
[Outro]
Open your eyes and get wise
Look alive, in '95, word up
Hypnotic thug life, get that ass paralyzed
Nomsayin? Mobb Deep and all that
