Taiwan (historically called Formosa, from Portuguese: Ilha Formosa, "Beautiful Island", Portuguese pronunciation:[ˌiʎɐ fuɾˈmɔzɐ]) is an island in East Asia; it is located some 180 kilometres (112 miles) off the southeastern coast of mainland China across the Taiwan Strait. It has an area of 35,883km2 (13,855sqmi) and spans the Tropic of Cancer. The East China Sea lies to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east, the Luzon Strait directly to the south and the South China Sea to the southwest. Taiwan proper makes up 99% of the territory of the Free Area of Republic of China, after the ROC lost its mainland China territory in the Chinese Civil War and fled to the island in 1949, and the country itself is commonly referred to as simply "Taiwan".
Taiwan is a tilted fault block, characterized by the contrast between the eastern two-thirds, consisting mostly of five rugged mountain ranges parallel to the east coast, and the flat to gently rolling plains of the western third, where most of Taiwan's population reside. There are several peaks over 3,500m, the highest being Yu Shan at 3,952 metres (12,966ft), making Taiwan the world's fourth-highest island. The tectonic boundary that formed these ranges is still active, and the island experiences many earthquakes, a few of them highly destructive. There are also many active submarine volcanoes in the Taiwan Straits.

My Inspire Project EP3 – Taiwan, A Home Island to a Wealth of Culture, Sensational Food and Nature
Our new episode is dedicating to our home town, #Taiwan, an island formerly known as Formosa in the 17th century and remains largely undiscovered by Western travelers. But for those who make it here, they are in for a real treat.
Taiwan displays a wealth of culture with an eclectic mix of Chinese, Western, Japanese and indigenous influences. We have invited Taiwanese actor and celebrity TV host, Yi Lee, to explore the #StreetFood Culture with us. And we were also honored to experience the new era of the traditional Puppet Show and Art with Pili International Media and Taiwanese designer Wang Li Ling. The biggest surprise of all, is Taiwan’s nature: from towering mountains, rushing rivers, tropical beaches and sheers cliffs on the coast. With no doubt, Taiwan is one of the most welcoming ...

沒有什麼美景能比得上這些平時藏在水面下的水中生物。就是這種時刻讓我真心的景仰大海—神秘且美麗的 — 我特別珍惜當下的親身經歷
There’s nothing like diving under water and seeing all the amazing aquatic life that’s normally hidden from us, just below the surface. It’s moments like this that make me truly appreciate the ocean — with all its mystery and beauty — and cherish these times when I can experience it first-hand.

Rising tensions between China and Taiwan: Pressure on Matsu Islands | DW News
For years now, Beijing has been stepping up pressure on the territory it sees at its own. One of its latest tactics in that campaign: dredging up sand around the Taiwan-run Matsu islands. Since 2020, Chinese dredging ships have started operating heavily around the islands, which are just off the shores of mainland China, dropping anchor and scooping up vast amounts of sand from the ocean bed for construction projects. It's a strategy that's testing Taiwan's coast guard, and officials say it's disrupting their local economy and intimidating residents and tourists. The ships are also a problem for local fishermen. DW's Joyce Lee reports from Taiwan.

With no doubt, Taiwan is one of the most welcoming places on earth, as we encountered numerous acts of generosity and kindness throughout the journey.
Through our story, we would like to share the highlights of the new “#MadeinTaiwan,” and we hope this hidden paradise would attract more adventurous travels from the rest of the world.

#Taiwan #Island #Travel
