Ummah (Arabic:أمة) is an Arabic word meaning "community". It is distinguished from Sha'b (Arabic:شعب) which means a nation with common ancestry or geography. Thus, it can be said to be a supra-national community with a common history.
It is a synonym for ummat al-Islamiyah (Arabic:الأمة الإسلامية) (the Islamic Community), and it is commonly used to mean the collective community of Islamic peoples. In the Quran the ummah typically refers to a single group that shares common religious beliefs, specifically those that are the objects of a divine plan of salvation. In the context of Pan-Islamism and politics, the word Ummah can be used to mean the concept of a Commonwealth of the Believers (أمة المؤمنينummat al-mu'minīn).
General usage
The word Ummah refers to "the people" in Arabic, more specifically to Muslim people with a common ideology and culture. "Ummah" is also said in the Quran by Allah referring to Muslims. It is more commonly used in Islamic countries. Muslim Ummah refers to the unity of Muslims all over the world. The Muslim Ummah is responsible for upholding the religion and therefore benefiting the community regardless whether the community is Muslim or non-Muslim.

The majority come from former Portuguese colonies such as Mozambique and Guinea Bissau.
But there are also many recent migrants from India, Bangladesh, Morocco as well as students from conflict-hit countries such as Syria and Libya.
Eid is traditionally a time for families to come together in celebration.
For those gathered here, today is a time to think about their loved ones back home.
"This time I very, very miss my family, because (it has been a) very long year we are living alone. My father, mother (are in) Bangladesh. So here, at this time, I very, very miss my family," says Abu Yosof, a business owner from Bangladesh.
Imtiaz Ahmed, Bangladesh Ambassador to Portugal, adds: "It is hard, but yes, my family also. They are now in Bangladesh so whenever I will return home, I will telephone them. I'll share my enjoy(ment) through (the) telephone. But of course, if we are together, that enjoyment is different."
At Lisbon's Central mosque, prayers are being dedicated to those facing conflict and violence - such as those in Gaza and Syria.
Libyan student Mohammed Ben Khalil has been living in Lisbon for less than a year.
"We've been here for three months and we have nine months left - and I'm here for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. We are far from Libya, but Lisbon is a beautiful town and they respect Islam here and God bless them."
Abdool Vakil, President of the Islamic Community of Lisbon says Libyan and Syrian students reflect a lot on their families back home.
"They feel their parents and brothers are suffering and they, despite everything, are happy here. It is horrible for them to know that, but here they do feel at home," he says.
He continues: "Of course we are celebrating and we must, but we cannot forget about the ones who are suffering."

President Obama makes his first visit to a mosque in America and delivers remarks to the Muslim American community in Baltimore, Maryland. February 3, 2016.
(29 Jul 2014) LEADIN:
Muslims have packed out a square in Lisbon to take part in prayers marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
They've also been gathering at the city's central mosque, as the Eid al-Fitr festival got underway.
STORYLINE:
Lisbon's Praca Martim Moniz square has transformed into a place of a worship.
Hundreds of Muslims have come here to take part in Eid al-Fitr prayers marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
Portugal is home to approximately 50-thousand Muslims - with Lisbon at the heart of the community.
