An inside look at Islamic extremism | Mubin Shaikh
Mubin Shaikh was “bit by the jihadi bug” when he was 19. Born and raised in Canada, he traveled to Pakistan to study Islam — and there found himself captivated by a group of extremists who encouraged him to embrace a violent and skewed interpretation of the religion. In his talk, Shaikh shares the story of how he was de-radicalized, and eventually became an undercover counterterrorism operative for the CIA.

Yazidi woman held captive by ISIS on how she was kidnapped at just 14
This month, the Yazidis will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the ISIS massacre, when thousands were killed by the extremists and more than 6,000 women and children were kidnapped.
A decade on, few have been held accountable for the horrific killings and torture they suffered, which the UK and many other countries now recognise as a genocide.
Sky News has this exclusive story of the remarkable tale of a young woman kidnapped by ISIS when she was just 14.

How Islamic State tried to wipe out the Yazidis: Sky's Alex Crawford explains
Hundreds of thousands of Yazidis were either killed or enslaved when Islamic State entered northern Iraq 10 years ago.
Women were given to IS fighters as brides, which effectively made them sex slaves, while men were killed and buried in mass graves.
Many of those who survived now live in refugee camps, awaiting justice for the genocide.
Sky's special correspondent Alex Crawford explains who the Yazidis are and why IS tried to eradicate them.

Iraq’s Yazidis fight for justice | BBC News
It has been nearly 10 years since the self-declared Islamic State created a caliphate across Iraq and Syria.
The Yazidi people suffered greatly, as thousands were killed, and many more were kidnapped and enslaved.
Now, a court case against a widow of the Islamic State group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been brought about by Yazidis who were abducted and raped by members of IS.

Iraq's Yazidis Celebrate New Year
Hundreds of Yazidis congregated at the holy temple of Lalish in the northern city of Dohuk, Iraq to celebrate the Yazidi New Year, Tuesday, April 16. The celebrations come two years after Islamic State militants were driven out of Iraq. Men and women wearing traditional outfits were holding candles and paraffin torches around the steeple of the holy temple in Shekhan district about 430 kilometers northwest of the capital Baghdad. The feast celebrates old traditions, including the coloring of eggs, which represents the earth and beginning of creation in the Yazidi culture.

It's almost a decade since ISIS militants swept through Iraq and Syria but the legacy of their brutal caliphate remains. While many Iraqis are reclaiming their lives in a period of relative calm, the targets of ISIS’ genocide, the Yazidis, are not at peace.
The world was transfixed when this religious minority fled to the mountains of Sinjar. Rescue efforts managed to airlift some to safety and others who escaped on foot and were eventually settled in countries like Australia. But many were trapped and killed, and huge numbers of women and girls were taken as slaves.

The Yazidis’ Secret Children - BBC News
It is estimated that 80% of the Yazidi women rescued from the dying days of the so-called Islamic State have had children with their jihadi captors.
They were kidnapped from the the Yazidi community five years ago, but are not allowed to return until they abandon their children born during IS-captivity.
Over the last year, BBC Persian correspondent Nafiseh Kohnavard has been following the story of one of these Yazidi women, forced to choose between her child and her community.

They accuse her of colluding in the sexual enslavement of kidnapped girls and women.

The Yazidi girls were often still teenagers when they were abducted by IS fighters. Stolen from their villages in the mountains of Kurdistan, they were forcibly converted to Islam and sold to terrorists as sex slaves.
The atrocities reached their height in August 2014. Now, years later, survivors are returning home. They are severely traumatized. Will these women be able to make a new start? Theater maker Hussein tries to help them build a new life.

Worshippers kiss the marble walls and gaze at an ornate peacock inlaid with multi-coloured stones as the world's largest Yazidi temple opens in Armenia. An ancient ethnic group long persecuted for their faith, Yazidis have found a safehaven in the ex-Soviet Caucasus country, where they have a community of around 35,000, and are able to freely practice their religion.
