ISADORA DUNCAN: An Unconventional Dancer Whose Life Was Filled with Tragedy and Drama
In 1921, the dancer Isadora Duncan met the famous poet Sergei Yesenin. But the relationship with the Russian, 18 years younger than her, was stormy and short-lived. Although they married after about six months, they broke up again a year later. Yesenin was then found dead in his hotel room a few years later - reportedly a suicide. But this episode in Isadora Duncan's life was only a sliver of the unfortunate events that haunted her throughout her life.

Frederick Ashton saw Isadora Duncan dance in London in 1921. It was to be one of the most enduring influences on his life. Duncan's freedom of movement, the driven intensity of her dancing and the way in which she seemed to fuse music and dance, were all profound influences on Ashton's own choreographic style. Almost fifty years after seeing her perform, Ashton recalled, 'She had the most extraordinary quality of repose. She would stand for what seemed quite a long time doing nothing, and then make a very small gesture that seemed full of meaning'.
Ashton originally choreographed a single waltz for Lynn Seymour, which had its premiere at a Hamburg gala on 22 June 1975 in memory of Vaslav Nijinsky (another choreographer strongly influenced by Duncan). The following year he expanded the piece to create a suite for Seymour, for a gala celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ballet Rambert – Marie Rambert, another admirer of Duncan, reputedly burst into tears on seeing Seymour so strongly embody one of her idols. Seymour never saw Duncan dance but was guided by the compendium of photos and line drawings that Ashton had collected. She later said of Duncan, 'She was a pioneer – she had a huge, strong self-belief. You don't see a lot of that today'.

Born & raised in California, she lived & danced in Western Europe, US & Soviet Union from the age of 22 until her death at age 50.The youngest of 4 children. Soon after Isadora's birth, her father was found to have been using funds from 2 banks he had helped set up to finance his private stock speculations. He avoided prison time & Isadora's mother divorced him & from then on, the family struggled with poverty.
Isadora attended school from the ages of 6 to 10, but she dropped out, having found it constricting. She & her 3 siblings earned money by teaching dance to local children.Feeling unhappy & unappreciated in America, she moved to London in 1898. She performed in the drawing rooms of the wealthy, taking inspiration from the Greek vases & bas-reliefs in the British Museum.Despite mixed reaction from critics, she became popular for her distinctive style & inspired many visual artists, such as Antoine Bourdelle, Dame Laura Knight, Auguste Rodin, Arnold Rönnebeck, André Dunoyer de Segonzac & Abraham Walkowitz, to create works based on her.She disliked the commercial aspects of public performance, because she felt they distracted her from her real mission, namely the creation of beauty & the education of the young. She opened schools to teach young women her philosophy of dance. After a decade in Berlin, she established a school in Paris that was shortly closed because of World War I.In 1914, she moved to the US & transferred her school there.Duncan in a Greek-inspired pose & wearing her signature Greek tunic. She took inspiration from the classical Greek arts & combined them with an American athleticism to form a new philosophy of dance, in opposition to the rigidity of traditional ballet.Breaking with convention, she imagined she had traced dance to its roots as a sacred art. She developed from this notion a style of free & natural movements inspired by the classical Greek arts, folk dances, social dances, nature &natural forces as well as an approach to the new American athleticism which included skipping, running, jumping, leaping & tossing. It is this philosophy & new dance technique that garnered Duncan the title of the creator of modern dance. In both professional & private life, she flouted traditional cultural standards. She bore 3 children, all out of wedlock. The first two, drowned in the care of their nanny in 1913 when their car went into the River Seine. Following the accident, Duncan spent several months recuperating in Corfu, then several weeks at the Viareggio seaside resort with the actress Eleonora Duse.Duncan relates that in her deep despair over the deaths of her children, she begged a young Italian stranger to sleep with her because she was desperate for another child. She gave birth to a son, but he died shortly after.By the late 1920s, she was so extremely depressed by the deaths of her 3 children that her performing career had dwindled. She became notorious for her financial woes, scandalous love life & public drunkenness. On Sept 14, 1927, in Nice, Duncan was a passenger in an Amilcar CGSS automobile. She wore a long, flowing, silk scarf. Her scarf, draped around her neck, became entangled around the open-spoked wheels & rear axle, pulling her from the open car & breaking her neck. She has attracted literary & artistic attention from the 1920s to the present, in novels, film, ballet, theatre, music & poetry. In literature: Aleister Crowley's Moonchild, Upton Sinclair's World's End & Between Two Worlds, Amelia Gray's novel Isadora, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The poem Fever 103 by Sylvia PlathAmong the films are:The 1966 BBC biopic by Kenneth Russell, Isadora Duncan, the Biggest Dancer in the World, Duncan was played by Vivian Pickles. The 1968 film Isadora, nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes, stars Vanessa Redgrave as Duncan. In Twelve Against the Gods, William Bolitho Ryall takes readers on a thrilling journey through the lives of twelve extraordinary individuals who dared to defy convention, challenge fate, and leave their mark on history. From Alexander the Great to Isadora Duncan, Bolitho profiles adventurers whose restless ambition and bold choices shaped the world around them.
First published in 1929, Twelve Against the Gods has captivated readers for generations, drawing renewed interest in the 21st century from entrepreneurs—notably Elon Musk—and others who believe that fortune favors the bold. With his characteristic mix of admiration and ambivalence, Bolitho reminds us that adventure is more than physical peril—it is the willingness to challenge the rules made by cautious men in favor of the unknown.

"We are born adventurers, and the love of adventures never leaves us till we are very old; old, timid men, in whose interest it is that adventure should quite die out. This is why all the poets are on one side, and all the laws on the other; for laws are made by, and usually for, old men."
