Foundation: How Isaac Asimov Changed Science Fiction Forever
Hey guys, it’s Quinn! Today we will be discussing what is without a doubt the most influential science fiction book Saga of all time, Asimov’s Foundation, and of course the associated works. Nowadays science fiction is known for its giant space empires with interconnecting politics, battles among the stars, and decades and even centuries-long plots with many different characters. Even robotic lifeforms have become a staple of science fiction. But these things were not always standard in the genre. Isaac Asimov, born January 2, 1920, is essentially credited with inventing the Galactic Empire. Isaac Asimov On AI-Last Interview
Isaac Asimov gave this interview as part of the “Vision Of The Future” series in 1991 and is his last major interview. He spoke to AI and how it would truly free humans, if we were ready. His idea to offload humans from doing things they were not good at and allow them to focus on the things they are good at, resonates loudly today. He articulates the premise that humans can be free to creatively think, create and problem solve.
Isaac, believed that AI (Artificial Intelligence) really is not, nor will it ever be human-like intelligence, but an intelligence on its own. Our challenge is to recognize this and work in symbiosis.

Isaac Asimov's Foundation Explained In FIVE Minutes! (Some Spoilers)
Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Series was the first-ever science fiction series to contain a full-fledged galactic empire. The entire series involves the centuries-long plan of a man known as Hari Seldon, to restore the human galactic empire after a great crash that led to a dark age. Hari Seldon was able to predict the fall of the first galactic empire by use of a form of mathematics known as psychohistory, which was able to predict human behavior overtime at mass.
Essentially the empire fell due to the capital planet, Trantor's inability to adequately handle the bureaucratic and administrative demands of such a large empire, containing 25 Million worlds. Hari Seldon’s Solution would ultimately prove to be extremely complicated and multifaceted, but it is presented initially as the creation ...

Isaac Asimov, born January 2, 1920, is essentially credited with inventing the Galactic Empire. Asimov also coined the term “Robotics” and the term “Positronic'' both of which were used in one of the greatest Science Fiction shows of all time, 1987’s Star Trek The Next Generation, for the android character, Data, whose positronic mind was a focal point of many episodes. These words, like many of the terms and concepts used in Asimov's books and short stories, have become commonplace in science fiction. This becomes clearer when we take a look at what science fiction was before 1940.

How did the earliest galaxies form, and what implications does that have for fundamental laws of physics? Join Neil deGrasse Tyson, the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, and a panel of leading scientists and experts for a spirited conversation around the profound impact NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is having on our understanding of the universe since it began transmitting images and astronomical data in 2022.
#JWST #EarlyUniverse #BigBang #Astrophysics
This year’s panelists include Mike Boylan-Kolchin of University of Texas at Austin, Wendy Freedman of the University of Chicago, Priya Natarajan of Yale University, Rachel Somerville of the Flatiron Institute, and John Wise of Georgia Institute of Technology. Delving into the cosmic mysteries unraveled by the JWST, the discussion will explore the telescope’s recent revelations, including bright and enigmatic galaxies that emerge in the extremely early universe–challenging conventional cosmological understandings of how galaxies formed.
The late Dr. Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific and influential authors of our time, was a dear friend and supporter of the American Museum of Natural History. In his memory, the Hayden Planetarium is honored to host the annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate—generously endowed by relatives, friends, and admirers of Isaac Asimov and his work—bringing the finest minds in the world to the Museum each year to debate pressing questions on the frontier of scientific discovery. Proceeds from ticket sales of the Isaac Asimov Memorial Debates benefit the scientific and educational programs of the Hayden Planetarium.

Dr. Isaac Asimov was a prolific science fiction author, biochemist, and professor. This was recorded in 1982. Asimov was best known for his works of science fiction and for his popular science essays. Born in Russia in 1920 and brought to the United States by his family as a young child, he went on to become one of the most influential figures in the world of speculative fiction. He wrote hundreds of books on a variety of topics, but he's especially remembered for series like the "Foundation" series and the "Robot" series.
Asimov's science fiction often dealt with themes and ideas that pertained to the future of humanity.
The "Foundation" series for example, introduced the idea of "psychohistory" – a mathematical way of predicting the future based on large population behaviors. While we don't have psychohistory as described by Asimov, his works did reflect the belief that societies operate on understandable and potentially predictable principles.
Asimov's "Robot" series introduced the world to the Three Laws of Robotics, which are:
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
These laws have been influential in discussions about robot ethics and the future of AI, even though they are fictional constructs.
Like many futurists and speculative authors, Asimov's predictions were a mix of hits and misses.
Hits: He anticipated the rise of computer networks and something resembling the internet. He also foresaw the idea of robotic assistants and many issues that would arise with automation and the changing nature of work.
Misses: Some of Asimov's predictions, like many other futurists', were either too optimistic in terms of timeframes or overestimated certain societal shifts. For example, while he predicted a rise in automation, some of the specifics (like how society would handle the transition) have been more complex than he foresaw.

Isaac Asimov talks about superstition, religion and why he teaches rationality
This was recorded in 1988. He also explains why some people who think that we should abandon science are wrong and how scientific worldview is the best.
