The Iron Curtain was the physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of World War II in 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1991. The term symbolized efforts by the Soviet Union to block itself and its satellite states from open contact with the west and non-Soviet-controlled areas. On the east side of the Iron Curtain were the countries that were connected to or influenced by the Soviet Union. On either side of the Iron Curtain, states developed their own international economic and military alliances:
Physically, the Iron Curtain took the form of border defenses between the countries of Europe in the middle of the continent. The most notable border was marked by the Berlin Wall and its Checkpoint Charlie which served as a symbol of the Curtain as a whole.
Iron Curtain is a comedy musical about the Soviet Union, with music by Stephen Weiner, lyrics by Peter Mills, and a book by Susan DiLallo.
Story
The musical follows Murray and Howard, an unsuccessful musical writing team, as they attempt to write a great musical. However, all of their ideas are taken. Meanwhile, Nikita Khrushchev, the Russian Premier, is becoming tired of the horrible musicals being produced by writers in the Soviet Union. He assigns Yevgenyi Onanov to create a propaganda musical, promoting Communism and working for the glory of Russia. However, the musical that Onanov creates, a bad rip-off of Oklahoma!, is terrible. Khrushchev tells Onanov to fix it, or his demise may be imminent. He also assigns Shmearnov to the problem, with the same consequences for failure. The pair kidnaps Murray and Howard to fix the musical. They are brought behind the Iron Curtain, and they begin work on the musical with the help of a crazy cast of characters.
The Iron Curtain was the symbolic, ideological, and physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of World War II in 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1991.
Iron Curtain may also refer to:
Over-the-Rhine, sometimes abbreviated OTR, is a neighborhood in Cincinnati.
It is believed to be the largest, most intact urban historic district in the United States.
Over-the-Rhine was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 with 943 contributing buildings.
It contains the largest collection of Italianate architecture in the United States, and is an example of an intact 19th-century urban neighborhood. It was developed at a time of a high rate of German immigration to Cincinnati, and became the heart of its ethnic German community for decades. When Old St. Mary's Church opened here in 1842, it was the largest church in the Ohio Valley.
Today the neighborhood has a strong arts community, and is home to two arts schools and many theatres and galleries. In the 21st century, it is considered the fastest-growing, trendiest neighborhood in the city; Over-the-Rhine has been voted 'Best Cincinnati Neighborhood' in CityBeat's Best of Cincinnati from 2011-2014. Since the early 2000s, OTR has been experiencing rapid development, with many buildings being rehabilitated for use as apartments, condos and retail spaces.
Over-the-Rhine is bordered by the neighborhoods of Downtown, CUF, Prospect Hill, Pendleton, and the West End.
Over the Rhine is an American, Ohio-based folk music band, the core of which is the husband-and-wife team of pianist/guitarist/bassist Linford Detweiler and vocalist/guitarist Karin Bergquist. The band began as a quartet with guitarist Ric Hordinski and drummer Brian Kelley. Hordinski left the band in December 1996, and Kelley continued to play into 1997 before departing. The original foursome reunited in December 2008 at The Taft Theatre (in Cincinnati) to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the formation of the band, and again in the summer of 2010 at Ric's studio, "the Monastery", to play the album "Good Dog Bad Dog" live, in its entirety.
The band's namesake and place of origin is the Cincinnati, Ohio neighborhood Over-the-Rhine. Karin attended school in Barnesville, Ohio and graduated from Barnesville High School in 1984. She then went to Malone College, located in Canton, Ohio, where she met Linford. Karin and Linford were married in the fall of 1996 in Cincinnati and several years ago relocated to a pre-Civil War farm outside of town.

What Was The Iron Curtain? Where did the term come from? The cold war?
In this episode of Let’s Teach, we're answering the question - what was the iron curtain? The Iron Curtain was a metaphorical phrase used to describe such a separation, but it also extended into a physical barrier dividing a European region ripped apart by the war and the influence of the Soviet Union.
But where does the term come from, how did it come to be applied to war-torn Europe, and when and why was it lifted?
