On 18 December 1982, Irish Times security correspondent Peter Murtagh broke the news that the telephone of Bruce Arnold and Geraldine Kennedy had been tapped officially with warrants signed by former Minister for Justice Seán Doherty. This was revealed after the November 1982 elections which the outgoing government had lost.
Incoming Minister for Justice Michael Noonan ordered an investigation and on 20 January 1983 announced findings that the previous Fianna Fáil government had authorised illegal phone tapping of the journalists Geraldine Kennedy, Bruce Arnold and Vincent Browne.Seán Doherty signed warrants for the taps while Minister for Justice. Normally phone tapping was used to investigate serious crime or threats to the security of the state but the reverse happened in this case, Minister Noonan announced.
History
Tapping
The phone tapping warrants were initiated by Séan Doherty in discussion with Deputy Garda Commissioner Joseph Ainsworth.
The phone of Bruce Arnold was tapped from May 10, 1982 to July 12 the same year. The application was stated to be for security purposes, with a departmental record claiming he was "anti-national".
The Garda phone recordings controversy refers to the widespread practice of recording phone calls in Ireland to and from Garda Síochána police stations from the 1980s to November 2013, which was revealed in March 2014. The scandal unfolded while Fine Gael and the Labour Party were in office, though the time period involved also covered successive governments during which Fianna Fáil, the Green Party and the Progressive Democrats were all in power. Among those implicated in the scandal are the Taoiseach (prime minister) Enda Kenny, justice minister Alan Shatter (since resigned), Secretary General of the Department of Justice Brian Purcell, Secretary General of the Department of the Taoiseach Martin Fraser, attorney general Máire Whelan, Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan (since resigned), as well as Independent News & Media, Ireland's largest and most powerful media organisation.
The term GUBU (grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecedented), first used in 1982 to describe the arrest of Malcolm MacArthur in the home of Attorney General Patrick Connolly was invoked to describe the Garda controversy. Shane Phelan, Public Affairs Editor at the Irish Independent commented "it is now safe to say we have finally reached GUBU territory", while Michael Clifford of the Irish Examiner observed "More than 30 years after the original GUBU moment, here was another one."

The Controversial Scene that took 'The Beverly Hillbillies' off the Air
The Beverly Hillbillies is an American sitcom television series broadcast on CBS from 1962 to 1971. The show had an ensemble cast featuring Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, Donna Douglas, and Max Baer Jr. as the Clampetts, a poor backwoods family from the Ozarks region of Arkansas[1] who move to posh Beverly Hills, California after striking oil on their land. The show was produced by Filmways and was created by writer Paul Henning. He quickly became a household name among the capital’s youth after setting up a pirate pop radio station Radio Dublin from his cramped living room in Inchicore.

One of the victims told the court that the abuse had started when she was around seven and continued until some time before her 11th birthday. Was Eamon Cooke Ireland's Jimmy Saville?
Since Cooke's death in 2016, he has been linked with the case of Philip Cairns and the film explains why. Cairns disappearance sparked off one of the biggest manhunts in the history of Ireland at the time, and remains one of the highest profile missing persons cases in the country.
Philip Cairns was last seen on Ballyroan Road in Rathfarnham on Thursday, October 23rd, 1986. Despite extensive searches in the aftermath of his disappearance, no trace of him was found.
