Belgium played a pivotal role in World War I, particularly during the Battle of Ypres which consisted of three major conflicts.
The First Battle of Ypres was in 1914 as German forces sought to advance through Belgium and reach the English Channel. The prolonged fighting prevented a breakthrough, establishing the static trench warfare that defined much of the Western Front during the war.
The Second Battle of Ypres occurred in 1915, and marked the first large-scale use of poison gas in warfare. German forces released chlorine gas, causing significant Allied losses.
The Third Battle of Ypres, also known as Passchendaele, occurred in 1917 and aimed to break through German lines. It was fought on a low-lying area prone to heavy rain and the battle is remembered for the harsh muddy conditions.
This is part three of a series exploring the WW1 sites on the Western Front and I start my visit in Belgium at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in the world. While in Belgium, I also visit some First World War trenches, the Langemark German Cemetery and the Menin Gate to watch the Last Post ceremony.
Thank you to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the German War Graves Commission for their assistance in the production of this film.
