MD VA DC I-495 Capital Beltway Outer Loop
This is the full length of Interstate 495 circumnavigating Washington D.C., also known as the Capital Beltway. The ring road is physically located in the surrounding states of Maryland and Virginia, with a tiny portion within the corner of the District of Columbia's borders.
The eastern portion of I-495 is concurrent with I-95.
This video contains solely the direction running counterclockwise, officially referred to as the outer loop. Express lanes and High occupancy toll lanes (HOT lanes) are taken.
Weather is clear and traffic is free flowing on a Saturday morning.
I originally intended to record this video in 4K but a brain fart caused me to create cabin conditions that overheated my 4K camera, so the video source is my trusty old 1080p/30fps dashcam.

Except for the westernmost part of Woodrow Wilson Bridge south of downtown Washington (the water below is considered part of the District of Columbia), the Capital Beltway encircles Washington, D.C., in adjacent Maryland and Virginia. The two directions of travel, clockwise and counterclockwise (looking at a map), have become known respectively as the "Inner Loop" and the "Outer Loop". The route descriptions below follow the direction of the Outer Loop, starting at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge over the Potomac River, south of Washington.
I-495/Capital Beltway signage in Virginia
Most Beltway interchanges provide access to Washington, with I-95 and I-295 from the south, I-66 from the west, and US 50 from both the west and the east among the most frequently used. More scenic routes from the Beltway into the District are offered by the George Washington Memorial Parkway along the Virginia side of the Potomac, the Clara Barton Parkway along the Maryland side of the river, and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, approaching Washington from the northeast.
Originally, the entire Beltway was simply I-495, and I-95 was planned to serve downtown Washington, D.C., from the south and north, intersecting the Beltway in Virginia and in Maryland. However, environmental litigation stopped completion of this plan, and the built portion of I-95 inside the Beltway from the south northward into downtown Washington was redesignated I-395 in 1977. The small built portion from the north was converted into a park-and-ride lot. I-95 was then rerouted (and so signed) along the eastern side of the Beltway, with the I-495 designation left only along the western side. In 1989, the I-495 designation was returned to the eastern portion as well, with the highway co-signed as I-95 and I-495 along this route.

Let's take a POV driving trip on the Capital Beltway! We'll drive point-of-view style on Interstate 495 around Washington, DC. We'll start our road trip north of DC where Interstate 495 and Interstate 95 meet. Form there, we'll drive along the Inner Loop of I-495 heading east and south. We'll drive past Greenbelt. Lanham, Largo and Oxen Hill. Then we'll cross the Potomac River- on the Woodrow Wilson Drawbridge- into Virginia. Traveling west, still on the Inner Loop of 495 we'll drive past Alexandria and end our trip where I-495 and I95 meet once again south of Washington, DC.
I-495 CAPITAL BELTWAY INFO:
The 64-mile-long Capital Beltway surrounds Washington, D.C., the nation's capital, and its inner suburbs in neighboring Maryland and Virginia. It is part of the Washington metropolitan area. It serves as the foundation for the expression "inside the Beltway," which is used to discuss matters pertaining to the American federal government and politics. The whole length of the road is designated as Interstate 495, and its southern and eastern halves travel alongside Interstate 95.
The Beltway is located not only in the states of Maryland and Virginia but also crosses briefly (for about 300 feet) near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge as it crosses over the Potomac River. Prince George's County, Montgomery County, Fairfax County, and the independent city of Alexandria in Virginia are all traversed by the Beltway. The terms "Inner Loop" and "Outer Loop" now refer to the two directions of travel, clockwise and counterclockwise, respectively.
I-95 and I-295 from the south, I-66, and US-50 are among the most commonly used interchanges on the Beltway that provide access to Washington. The George Washington Memorial Parkway and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway offer more picturesque routes from the Beltway into the District.
I-95 was intended to service downtown Washington, D.C. Initially, the entire Beltway was just I-495. The construction of I-95 inside the Beltway from the south to the north into downtown Washington was halted by an environmental lawsuit, and in 1977 it was renamed I-395. A park-and-ride lot was created from the modest developed portion to the north. The Beltway's eastern section was later reconfigured for I-95, leaving only the western side with the I-495 moniker. The eastern section of the highway once again received the I-495 name in 1989, and I-95 and I-495 were co-signed along this stretch.
Since the 1940s, when Fred W. Tummler, director of planning for the National Capital Park and Planning Commission, suggested an Inter-County Metropolitan Freeway, the idea of creating a freeway around the Washington suburbs has been explored.
In 1951, the Senate Public Works Committee supported the plan to construct the roadway. The plan, which had the support of Senator Francis Case of South Dakota, called for the highway to start in Beltsville at the nearly finished Baltimore-Washington Parkway, travel through Silver Spring and Bethesda, cross the Potomac River over a new bridge, continue west through Tysons Corner and Falls Church, and end at Route 1 in Gum Springs.
The idea had developed by December 1952 into a freeway that completely surrounded the suburbs of Washington. The highway was built with the intention of easing traffic and providing the military with a backup route in case of an emergency. The Capital Beltway's construction received the final federal government approval in 1955. The Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge and the first segment of the 64-mile Beltway were opened in December 1961, and the roadway was finished on August 17, 1964.
There are a few specific goals of Travel Towner:
1. To take fun POV (“Point-of-View”) videos of scenic drives, highways, and roadways so you can virtually travel anywhere you like; or look back at a time when you were younger.
2. Document a fun walking tour of a specific park, attraction, or point of interest so you can see what's it's like to really be there.
3. Showcase vintage footage from yesteryear to show today's viewers what is may have been like back in 19- something something! If you have any vintage footage of past attractions, parks, road trips or anything interesting from the USA? Contact me and let’s feature it here!
4. Just for Fun. These are videos that are funny or interesting in some way that I think everyone will enjoy!
Please give a "thumbs up" if you like taking a POV Road Trip or love POV driving.
