The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) is a global union federation of transport workers' trade unions, founded in 1896. In 2009 the ITF had 654 member organizations in 148 countries, representing a combined membership of 4.5 million workers.
The ITF represents the interests of transport workers' unions in bodies such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The organization also informs and advises unions about developments in the transport industry in other countries or regions of the world, and organise international solidarity actions when member unions in one country are in conflict with employers or government.
International Transport Workers Federation - Fighting For Better Seas
International Transport Workers Federation Dean Summers
The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) is a global union body representing millions of transport workers worldwide. Maritime workers, their unions and the shipping industry know the ITF for its ground breaking work to eliminate the exploitation of seafarers and for its flags of convenience (FOC) campaign. The mirror campaign, ports of convenience (POC), aims to protect rights and working conditions for dockers in ports.

International Transport Workers Federation - UPS Protest
Transport workers across the world are holding a day of action to ram home the message to UPS managers that the sacking of 157 workers in Turkey will not go unnoticed.

The unionists are organising mass actions outside UPS operations and other locations around the world on 1 September, following a resolution pledging support for the dismissed workers, which was passed at the ITF congress in Mexico earlier this month. The activists are calling for the reinstatement of the workers, an end to UPS's hostile anti-union approach in Turkey. They are also demanding that management establish sound industrial relations. Unions in countries across all continents have committed to participate in the action day - from Argentina, Australia, Hong Kong and the Netherlands to South Africa and the US.
Kenan Ozturk, TUMTIS President, commented: "UPS workers in Turkey face aggression. International support will send a clear message to UPS that anti-union activity is not acceptable. Global workers' solidarity will defeat employers' attacks."
In addition to taking part in the global action, ITF affiliates are being urged to write letters of protest to UPS chief executive officer and chairman of the board Scott Davies, based at the company's head office in the US.
The ITF will be monitoring the situation at UPS and is asking affiliates to be on standby should further action be necessary.
