What is international development really? | Alanna Shaikh
Reduction of poverty, liberation, freedom: all of these words have been used to define international development, but no definition is set in stone. Global development expert and TED Fellow Alanna Shaikh breaks it down for us: It is about providing aid, while understanding that the developing world actually subsidizes the developed world. In this talk she points a light at corruption in an effort towards a more just world.

International Development Theories Compared
How do international development theories help us understand and conceptualize development? How do we define development, anyway? Here, our new host Miss E will lead you through different international development theories, from Modernization Theory, Dependency Theory, Neoliberalism, Critical theories, to the more contemporary expressions of development, such as Amartya Sen's Human Development and more recently, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs. Which one best explains the international development situation today? Do any of them do a good job - or is development too complex of a concept to neatly fit into a single box.
Thanks again to Miss E for the exceptional job hosting this one! Hopefully you'll see more of her in future videos!

Global Development Explained
The world is healthier and wealthier today than ever before. As the world becomes more connected and technologically advanced, some countries have made drastic improvements in life expectancy and economic growth. Many have implemented economic policies that encourage trade and others also receive developmental assistance from larger countries that see strategic value in providing aid. But other countries, especially those that have experienced political instability, natural disasters, and long-term domestic conflict, have seen less improvement. Development is a hard concept to define and its trends depend on many factors, that is why the United Nations launched its list of Sustainable Development Goals, a new environmentally friendly and inclusive framework for countries to develop.
