Approximately two hours drive north of Manhattan, sits an empty Victorian mansion in Beacon New York. This 14,000 ft.² Gothic building, was once a psychiatric institution for the rich and famous. Big names like a Marilyn Monroe and Zelda Fitzgerald went there to recover from the strains of life.
Being rich doesn’t make one immune to mental illness, and in many cases being admitted to this hospital…meant the end of the road.

Subscribe to Our Life: https://bit.ly/3dBMxvl
The world's oldest psychiatric institution - the South London and Maudsley (SLaM) - opens its doors in a brand series, challenging the myths, taboos and stigma around mental illness in Britain. At Lambeth Hospital in south London, the Trust has pioneered the use of short-stay emergency wards for patients in crisis. It's effectively run like A and E but for those with mental illness. Cameras are granted access for the first time to a world where critical decisions about risk are taken every day by psychiatrists and nurses. It works like a sorting office. Over the course of a few days clinicians assess patients and decide whether they are stable enough to return home or whether they need to go on to a longer stay psychiatric ward. Most patients ...

HORROR & FASCINATION at the Glore Psychiatric Museum | History Traveler Episode 216
One of the most fascinating things to study is the mind. Of equal interest is the history of how mental health has been treated. We're in St. Joseph, MO at the Glore Psychiatric Museum which sits on the site of the former State Lunatic Asylum #2 and now serves to educate people on mental illness and it's treatments. There wasn't a single thing in this museum that we didn't find interesting. Definitely one to watch until the end!

This is a documentary by first time Toronto filmmakers Naomi Berlyne and Sibyl Likely. It documents the incredible stories of the 'patients' who lived many years ago behind the walls of Toronto's last remaining psychiatric hospital, now known as CAMH (Centre For Addiction and Mental Health). The Institution was first built in 1850, and was then called 'The Provincial Lunatic Asylum'. This film traces the institution's early history, including the degrading treatment of patients, as well as stories of how some patients managed to escape or rebel. The second part of the film focuses on contemporary narratives of Mad People as they discuss the challenges they have experienced while hospitalized as well as in society at large. Despite the heavy subject matter, film ends on a hopeful note with current stories of resistance and resilience.
