EP6: what is an inertial navigation system? 🇬🇧 | Safran
Commercial or military planes, drones, helicopters, ships, submarines, rockets, satellites… All these vehicles share a common technology: an inertial navigation system. In this episode, we introduce the basic principles of inertial navigation and how it enables the localization, guidance, and steering of any vehicle without using the GPS technology.
To achieve such mission, an inertial unit system is fitted with several acceleration and rotation sensors, capable of measuring with an extreme precision the movements of any given object. Find out more about this marvelous technology in the sixth episode of our “SimplyFly” web series.

Inertial Navigation Systems - Highend Navigation Solution
Inertial navigation systems like the ADMA from GeneSys calculate the position, orientation and velocity of a moving object. These systems are used in many different vehicles. GNSS-aided navigation provides a high absolute positioning accuracy but relies on a clear signal from satellites to establish a position. The combination of GNSS and inertial sensor technology makes it possible to obtain interference free measurement data with a very high absolute accuracy at a high bandwidth.

Litton LN3-2A - Inertial Navigation Platform - Moving 3 Gimbals
This is a Litton LN3-2A Inertial Navigation Platform from the sixties.
It was used in the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter and the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom aircraft.
Its main purpose is navigation. With an Inertial platform, you do not require the use of external sources like radio beacons or GPS, and it does not emit any radiation like radar.
This is a short video showing the 3 main gimbals moving.
From the outside towards the inside:
- Outer Roll Gimbal
- Pitch Gimbal
- Inner Roll Gimbal
- Azimuth Gimbal
The Inner Roll Gimbal is not moving in this video.
The 2 main gyros and the gimbals are used to keep the inner platform holding the 3 accelerometers in a fixed position wrt the earth's surface.
The output of the accelerometers is integrated to get velocity.
The velocity obtained is...

The velocity obtained is one more integrated to get the distance.
Inside the orange gyros is a sphere floating in a fluid. The density of the fluid, the volume of the sphere, and its mass make the spere float in the fluid. (neutral buoyancy)
Inside this sphere is a 3-phase motor spinning a mass. (the actual Gyro)
When the gyro moves in one direction this results in a force moving the spinning mass in a perpendicular direction. This is detected by a pair of pick-up coils. The amplified difference signal of the pick-up coils is used to drive the correct gimbal. This restores the relation between the gyroscope housing and the floating sphere. The rotation of the gimbals keeps the platform with the 3 accelerometers stable wrt the earth.

The F-111E General Dynamics, developed in the 1960s, is an iconic American tactical bomber featuring variable-sweep wings for enhanced versatility. Born out of a joint Air Force-Navy initiative, it aimed to serve both services' needs, resulting in a versatile aircraft.
Its development history intertwines with the challenges of achieving a dual-role capability, adapting to various mission profiles. With its innovative swing-wing design, the F-111E could alter wing sweep in flight, optimizing performance for different phases such as low-level penetration or high-speed interception.
Technically, the F-111E boasted powerful TF30-P-3 turbofan engines, enabling sustained supersonic flight. Equipped with advanced avionics, terrain-following radar, and an inertial navigation system, it excelled in all-weather, day-and-night operations. The aircraft's terrain-following capability was particularly ground-breaking, allowing it to fly at low altitudes to evade enemy radar.
During the 1970s, the F-111E played a crucial role in the U.S. military, serving in strategic bombing and tactical roles. Its adaptability and cutting-edge technology marked it as a standout aircraft of its era, influencing subsequent designs.
The F-111E left a lasting legacy, showcasing the United States' commitment to innovation in military aviation."
