In the United Kingdom Independent schools (also private schools) are fee-paying private schools, governed by an elected board of governors and independent of many of the regulations and conditions that apply to state-funded schools. Some of the older, expensive and more exclusive schools catering for the 13–18 age-range in England and Wales are known as Public schools, the term "public" being derived from the fact that they were open to pupils regardless of where they lived or their religion. Prep schools, (or preparatory school) educate younger children up to the age of 13 to "prepare" them for entry to the public schools and other independent schools. Some former grammar schools converted to an independent fee paying model following the 1965 Circular 10/65 which marked the end of their state funding, others converted into comprehensive schools.
There are around 2,500 independent schools in the UK, which educate around 615,000 children, some 7 per cent of all British children and 18 per cent of pupils over the age of 16. In addition to charging tuition fees, many also benefit from gifts, charitable endowments and charitable status. Many of these schools are members of the Independent Schools Council.
An independent school is a school that is independent in its finances and governance; it is not dependent upon national or local government for financing its operations, nor reliant on taxpayer contributions, and is instead funded by a combination of tuition charges, donations, and in some cases the investment yield of an endowment. It is governed by a board of directors that is elected by an independent means and a system of governance that ensures its independent operation. It may receive government funds. However, its board must be independent.
The terms independent school and private school are often synonymous in popular usage outside the United Kingdom. Independent schools may have a religious affiliation, but the more precise usage of the term excludes parochial and other schools if there is a financial dependence upon or governance subordinate to outside organizations. These definitions generally apply equally to primary education, secondary education, and tertiary education institutions.
Education in Australia can be classified according to sources of funding and administrative structures. There are two broad categories of school in Australia: public schools (also known as government or state schools) and private schools, which can be further subdivided into Catholic schools and independent schools.
Primary/Secondary
At primary and secondary level, government schools educate about half of students. The major part of their costs is met by the relevant State or Territory government. Private schools, both religious or secular (the latter often with specialisations), may charge higher fees. Regardless of whether a school is government or private, it is regulated by the same curriculum standards framework. Most schools, government and private, enforce a uniform or dress code, although there are varying expectations.

Living Like Harry Potter - A Day At Boarding School
Tradition meets modernity at Sherborne boarding school in Great Britain – almost reminiscent of Hogwarts, the wizarding school in the Harry Potter stories.
It's not just any school, either; even actor Jeremy Irons and singer Chris Martin went to there. We follow Max, who – like his siblings – lives at Sherborne, one of the country’s more renowned boarding schools.
Founded in 1550, it’s one of the oldest of its kind in Great Britain. Some 600 boys between the ages of 13 and 18 study here. 16-year-old Max lets us experience a day with him, with everything that’s comes with boarding school life.

Private Schools Are Trauma Factories | Ash Sarkar meets Richard Beard | Downstream
Britain is unique in the way that public schools (that's private schools to anyone outside of Britain) have a stranglehold on the establishment. Alumni of these schools are massively overrepresented in the upper echelons of society - so is it any wonder that the media, the judicial system and the political class treat normal people with contempt?
To explore the connections between power and the institutions that consolidate it in the hands of the few, Ash is joined by Richard Beard, author of 'Sad Little Men: Private Schools and the Ruin of England'.
You can find Richard's book here: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/443436/sad-little-men-by-beard-richard/9781529114805

Does going private really give you a first class advantage, and does a state education really mean second-rate? This programme unpicks the educational gulf dividing Britain's school system.

In the UK, education is one of the big political battlefields for governments and opposition alike. It also seems to represent somewhere where the class war still endures. Opponents of private schooling deride the privileged few who seem to rise to the top of most professions. The state system is also under fire. Hundreds of schools have been classed as failing, teachers are leaving in droves - and thousands of children are left, it is claimed, without proper qualifications or any prospect of a decent job in the future.
In a unique experiment, a private head, his state school counterpart and six of their pupils spend a week in each other's worlds. Does going private really give you a first class advantage, and does a state education really mean second-rate? This programme unpicks the educational gulf dividing Britain's school system.
