Myanmar celebrated its 69th Independence Day on Wednesday in the capital Nay Pyi Taw, its first celebration following the National League for Democracy setting up a new government.
At 04:20, the guard of honor staged a flag-raising ceremony, accompanied by crowds of young people representing the country's different ethnic groups.
Myanmar First Vice-President U Myint Swe addressed the ceremony on behalf of President U Htin Kyaw.
In his speech, the vice-president pointed out that the conflicts among different ethnic groups hampered the development of the country. He called on the people to abide by the consensus reached during the 21st Century Panglong Conference, in order to realize peace and build the country through joint efforts.
As a tradition, locals also held various street games to celebrate the holiday.

SOT, Suu Kyi in English: "This is a public order preservation act but
alright you can use section 5 but you've got to use it in accordance with the terms of the law. Our country will be a far better and happier place, their lack of cooperation does not help them, it does not help us either, of course, I admit that as well, it makes life difficult for us but we are nevertheless going to continue with the work that we have set out for ourselves which is to achieve democracy for Burma. We are confident that without democracy Burma can never be the kind of country that the fathers of the independence envisaged. My father did not give up his life that Burma might be crushed by the military boot ... he gave up his life that Burma might be free and he wanted Burma to be free because he thought that it was only in a free Burma that the people will be able to realise their full potential."
