Ice Station Zebra by Alistair Maclean Book Review
My review of the 1963 cold war thriller Ice Station Zebra from Alistair MacLean. A brand new nuclear submarine, the USS Dolphin, races north to save the survivors of a fire at a north pole weather station.
Dr Carpenter seems more than he seems, what does he really want at the North Pole?
MacLean, a former Royal Navy man, was a prolific thriller writer from the 1960s to his death in 1987. Ice Station Zebra was made into a movie in 1968.

BOOK DESCRIPTION
A classic thriller from the bestselling master of action and suspense.
The atomic submarine Dolphin has impossible orders: to sail beneath the ice floes of the Arctic Ocean, and somehow locate and rescue the men of weather-station Zebra, gutted by fire and drifting with the ice-pack somewhere north of the Arctic Circle.
But the orders do not say what the Dolphin will find if she succeeds – that the fire at Ice Station Zebra was sabotage, and that one of the survivors is a killer.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Alistair MacLean, the son of a minister, was brought up in the Scottish Highlands. In 1941 he joined the Royal Navy. After the war he read English at Glasgow University and became a teacher. Two and a half years spent aboard a wartime cruiser gave him the background for HMS Ulysses, his remarkably successful first novel, published in 1955. He is now recognized as one of the outstanding popular writers of the 20th century, the author of 29 worldwide bestsellers, many of which have been filmed.

It's a mission to the North Pole in this classic film review of Submarine spy thriller Ice Station Zebra (1968) adapted from an Alistair MacLean novel and starring Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Jim Brown and Patrick McGoohan.
.
USN nuclear sub USS Tigerfish must rush to the North Pole to rescue the staff of Drift Ice Station Zebra when a Soviet satellite crash lands there...
Having received a distress signal, the nuclear submarine Tigerfish, commanded by Cmdr. James Ferraday (Rock Hudson), is called upon to get to Ice Station Zebra carrying a mysterious passenger Jones (Patrick McGoohan), and eventually picking up two more, a Soviet defector Boris Vaslov (Ernest Borgnine), and an American Marine officer, Captain Anders (Jim Brown).
Once Ferraday and his men arrive at Zebra, stumbling upon disaster and more mystery, the film shows glimpses of being an arctic spy thriller and several of the scenes actually reminded me of the thing or the thing from another world… Its here the plot gets a bit murky in terms of who’s who as the team all race to uncover some secret missing technology…
