"I'll Get By (As Long as I Have You)" is a popular song with music by Fred E. Ahlert and lyrics by Roy Turk. It was published in 1928 and originally sung by Aileen Stanley. The song was sung and recorded by Billie Holiday many times, from the mid-1930s onwards. It was sung by Irene Dunne in the movie A Guy Named Joe with Spencer Tracy (MGM, 1943). The song was revived to even greater success in 1944, when the 1940 recording by Harry James (Dick Haymes vocal) was re-released (during the 1942–44 musicians' strike, which prevented recording of new material) (Billboard #1). The Ink Spots' version featuring lead Tenor Bill Kenny was also popular in 1944, reaching the retail top ten. The song was included in Variety's "10 Best Sellers on Coin-Machines" for the week of June 21, 1944. The song was also included on The Lucky Strike Parade's Top Ten for 1944. A 1944 Billboard poll found that "I'll Get By" was the third most sold sheet music among GIs stationed in training camps and in Europe.

I'll Get By (film)

I'll Get By is a 1950 Technicolor musical directed by Richard Sale, and starring June Haver, Gloria DeHaven and William Lundigan.

This story follows themes explored in 1940's Tin Pan Alley, with updated characters and music. The plot revolves around songwriters and their struggles in the music industry.

Plot

Song plugger Bill Spencer runs into Liza Martin, literally. He slams a door into her accidentally while rushing to bring a new recording to Peter Pepper, an influential New York disc jockey. The record breaks,.

After he is fired, Bill opens his own music publishing business. He hires a secretary, Miss Murphy, and gains a partner in Freddy Lee, a young man from Texas, with whom he peddles a song that piano player Chester Dooley has written. They hear the singer Terry Martin is performing with trumpeter Harry James at a club, so go there to pitch the song to her. Terry's sister is also in the act; she is Liza, the girl Bill once awkwardly met.

Freddy annoys Terry but, fortunately, the girls like the song, "I'll Get By," and agree to record it. Before long, it and they become huge successes. But before a benefit in Hollywood, when the actress Jeanne Crain asks to perform the song, Bill says no because he promised it to Liza, but behind his back, Freddy agrees to let the actress have it. A furious Liza leaves Bill and refuses to listen to his attempts to explain.

Della Griffin

Della Griffin (born June 12, 1925) is a jazz vocalist and drummer. Also known as Della Simpson, she was a member of two of the first all female R&B groups in the 1950s, The Enchanters and The Dell-Tones.

Biography

Career

Della was born to William and Mary Gilliam and was the 19th out of 20 children. She was born in Newberry, South Carolina, but moved to New York, where she grew up.

She greatly admired and was influenced by Count Basie, Charlie Barnet, and most specifically Billie Holiday. She began singing when she was 12, and while singing remained her passion she was also proficient on the drums, alto saxophone, and piano. She graduated in 1943 from Jamaica High School in Queens, NY, and began singing professionally a few years after.

In 1950, Della Griffin and Frances Kelley decided to form a singing group. The two women knew each other from working together in a factory that manufactured shoulder pads. They then added to the group Pearl Brice, Della's childhood friend, and Rachel Gist, a Harlem club soloist. Their friend Chris Townes became their instructor, arranger, pianist, and songwriter. The group played in small clubs whenever they could for about a year. In 1951, Della invited Jerry Blaine, the owner of Jubilee Records, to hear the group perform. Blaine was so impressed by the group that he signed them the next day. The first songs they recorded include, "Today is Your Birthday," "How Could You Break My Heart," "I've Lost," "Housewife Blues," and "You Know I'm Not in Love With You." In January, 1952 Jubilee released The Enchanters first record. The Enchanters began touring the country and received such a positive response that in 1952 Shaws Artist Corporation signed on to represent them. Also in 1952, Jubilee released the Enchanters second record. Not long after this Rachel Gist and Pearl Brice decided to leave the group.

"Get By" is a song by American hip hop recording artist Talib Kweli. It was released on March 11, 2003 as the third single from his debut studio album Quality (2003). The song, produced by Kanye West, samples "Sinnerman" as performed by Nina Simone and features background vocals from Abby Dobson, Chinua Hawk, Kendra Ross, Vernetta Bobien and William "Na2" Taylor. The song peaked at number 77 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and at number 29 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

Remix

A remix was later released featuring verses from fellow American rappers Kanye West, Mos Def, Jay-Z and Busta Rhymes. A full-fledged posse cut, the latter three are also from Brooklyn, New York City, much like Kweli. The radio version of the remix featured only Busta Rhymes and Jay-Z, with lengthier versions of theirs and Kweli's verses.

In popular culture

In 2008, Atlanta-based rapper Rocko released a song titled "Dis Morning", from his debut album Self Made, which interpolates Kweli's "Get By". Also in 2008, "Get By" was featured in the comedy film First Sunday, as well as the film's soundtrack. In 2009, North Carolina-bred rapper J. Cole, freestyled over the song's production, which was featured on his 2009 mixtape The Warm Up.

"Get By" is a song recorded by Canadian country music artist Tim Hicks. Hicks co-wrote the song with Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line, Neil Sanderson of Three Days Grace, Casey Marshall and Shawn Hamm. It was released in December 2012 as the first single from his debut album, Throw Down. It peaked at number 57 on the Canadian Hot 100 in March 2013.

"Get By" was the number one selling country song in Canada for seventeen weeks. Sales of the single surpassed 100,000 units in less than eight months. It was certified Gold by Music Canada in June 2013.

Critical reception

Henry Lees of Top Country called the song a "singable stomper," writing that "it’s as great an introductory calling card as they come and an ear worm of the most welcome kind."
