A drainage divide, water divide, divide, ridgeline, watershed, water parting, or (in Canada) height of land, is the line that separates neighbouring drainage basins. In hilly country, the divide lies along topographicalridges, and may be in the form of a single range of hills or mountains, known as a dividing range. In flat country—especially where the ground is marshy—the divide may be harder to discern.
A valley floor divide is a low drainage divide that runs across a valley, sometimes created by deposition or stream capture.
A valley-floor divide occurs on the bottom of a valley and arises as a result of subsequent depositions, such as scree, in a valley through which a river originally flowed continuously.

What is the Continental Divide ? Is there more than one?
I’ll answer the question, “what is the continental divide?” Planet Earth consists of a slew of incredible geographical features – from icy fjords to sprawling mountains and cascading waterfalls. Many of us are familiar with these natural wonders; however, there’s a good chance that you aren’t aware of the Continental Divide.
In the simplest of terms, the Continental Divide is a sort-of invisible line that separates bodies of water moving in different directions. For instance, one side might contain rivers and streams that flow into the Atlantic Ocean while the other side feeds into the Pacific Ocean.

Back in 2020 after a historic fire season and long-lasting drought, a very strong system dropped up to 24 inches of snow along the Continental Divide as determined by the NationalOperational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center from Oct.
The Amazon rainforest is home to a remarkable variety of plants and animals not found anywhere else on Earth, with some species only located in certain areas, but the reason for this has perplexed and divided scientists for decades.
For her research, Miller used weather data from 'hydrological Bavaria' (the river catchments of the Danube, Main and Elbe), which she divided into four geographical and climatic subregions.
The most critical piece to those negotiations, Entsminger said, will be states agreeing on just how bad the future hydrologic conditions will be for the West’s most important river.
That subject is certainly of interest to those of us west of the divide.. Now I’m no hydrologic engineer, but I do understand the concept of subtraction.
Ajaio Chen and published in the Journal of Hydrology, used advanced computer modeling to divide a world map into red and blue regions to reflect areas worst hit by global warming compared to drought-induced local soil moisture deficit.

One big indicator for drought is hydrology - the flow of water through rivers and the state of the water stored underground in permeable rocks beneath the soil ... and Hydrology. A north-south divide.
