Relying almost exclusively on its sixty hydroelectric generating stations, Hydro-Québec is the largest electricity generator in Canada and the world's largest hydroelectric producer. As of 2011, the combined capacity of its power stations was 35,829 megawatt (MW) and its distribution network served 4.11 million customers.
The development of several large-scale hydroelectric projects which took place non-stop from the late 1940s to the mid-1990s — the Bersimis, Carillon, Manic-Outardes, Churchill Falls and the two phases of the James Bay Project — allowed Quebec to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. In 2009, primary electricity accounted for 40.05% of all energy used in the province. However, the construction and operation of these projects has led to conflicts with aboriginal populations living in Quebec's North.
Welcome to Hydro-Québec : Discover our generating stations and interpretation centres
Fourteen generating stations and interpretation centres across Québec invite the public to learn all about electricity and Québec’s industrial heritage. You’ll encounter stunning landscapes, fascinating discoveries and awe-inspiring structures that are a great source of pride.

Hydro-Québec employee charged for alleged espionage for China: RCMP | FULL
The RCMP charged a Hydro-Québec employee for espionage, the first time Insp. David Beaudoin said the charge had been laid in Canada, for allegedly obtaining trade secrets for the Chinese government.
He said the "alleged facts" occurred between February 2018 and October 2022.
Authorities say the investigation began in August 2022 after receiving a complaint from the company's corporate security branch. The 35-year-old man charged allegedly obtained the information to which he had access to as part of his job responsibilities.
Yuesheng Wang is expected to appear before court on Tuesday to face four charges: obtaining trade secrets, unauthorized use of computer, fraud for obtaining trade secrets, and breach of trust by a public officer.
