The name Helene has been used for five tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Ocean:
Hurricane Helene (1958) – a powerful storm in 1958 that grazed Cape Hatteras causing $11million in damage
Hurricane Helene (1988) – a 1988 category4 storm that stayed in the open sea, never threatening land
Tropical Storm Helene (2000) – entered the Caribbean Sea, made landfall at Fort Walton Beach, Florida, exited at the North Carolina coast and regained tropical storm strength heading northeast
Hurricane Helene (2006) – a 2006 category3 storm that stayed in the open ocean, never threatening land
The name should not be confused with Helena, which was used for a tropical storm during the 1963 Atlantic hurricane season, or Typhoon Helen (1972), which was used for a typhoon during the 1972 Pacific typhoon season.
The 1988 Atlantic hurricane season was a moderately active season that proved costly and deadly, with 15tropical cyclones directly affecting land. The season officially began on June 1,1988, and lasted until November 30,1988, although activity began on May 30 when a tropical depression developed in the Caribbean Sea. The June through November dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. The first cyclone to attain tropical storm status was Alberto on August 8, nearly a month later than usual. The final storm of the year, Tropical Storm Keith, became extratropical on November 24.
The season produced 19tropical depressions of which 12 attained tropical storm status. One tropical storm was operationally classified as a tropical depression but was reclassified in post-analysis. Five tropical cyclones reached hurricane status of which three became major hurricanes reaching Category3 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.
Helene was a long-lived Cape Verde-type hurricane that formed in the extreme southeastern part of the North Atlantic Ocean, peaking as a Category3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale as it traversed the central Atlantic. It never affected land until the very end of its lifespan as a weak extratropical system, which had minor impact in the northern British Isles.
Meteorological history
In the second week of September, a strong tropical wave began to emerge off the coast of Africa. It was well-organized from the start, and on September 11, even before it emerged off the coast, the National Hurricane Center believed that it could quickly develop into a tropical depression. That is indeed what happened, and it became Tropical Depression Eight on the morning of September 12. The enormous size of the depression made it fairly slow to develop, combined with some easterly wind shear in the eastern Atlantic and influence of the Saharan Air Layer to the north as it tracked south of the Cape Verde islands. Convection was also slow to build in, with little banding at first. The initial strengthening was delayed as a result. However, on September 13, the organization improved as banding became better defined, and that evening, the depression strengthened into Tropical Storm Helene.
Yankeetown was founded in 1923 by the Indiana politician and lawyer Armanis F. Knotts, who moved to the area because of his great love for hunting. Originally named for the founder, the present name comes from the fact the local mail carrier frequently and derisively directed visitors to the settlement he called "that Yankee town".
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 21.1 square miles (54.6km2), of which 7.6 square miles (19.8km2) is land and 13.4 square miles (34.8km2), or 63.75%, is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 629 people, 309 households, and 194 families residing in the town. The population density was 80.4 people per square mile (31.1/km²). There were 472 housing units at an average density of 60.3 per square mile (23.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.82% White, 1.43% Native American, 0.79% Asian, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.64% of the population.
The 1988 Atlantic Hurricane Season is infamous for having one of the strongest and most intense hurricanes on record in the basin, Hurricane Gilbert. The year also featured a crossover system in Hurricane Joan, which earned the name Miriam after entering the East Pacific.
