Windsor Fava Bean | Vicia faba
Here is the Windsor Fava Bean, Vicia faba. This broad bean variety goes way back to the 1860's and was a very popular variety. The Windsor variety Tolerates the cold extremely well and will seed on second year if left out. Plants can get to 3 feet tall and get quite bushy. The beans, with the outer seed coat removed, can be eaten raw or cooked. In young plants, the outer seed coat can be eaten, and in very young plants! We would always recommend you cook your beans before you eat them. Great variety for your fall planting! Open pollinated 40 to 85 days.

Fava Bean Flower Vicia faba
The fava bean or Vicia faba is furiously in flower.. the ants are harvesting "honeydew" or rather, milking the aphids on only one plant. Vicia faba, also known in the culinary sense as the broad bean, fava bean, or faba bean is a species of flowering plant in the pea and bean family Fabaceae. It is of uncertain origin and widely cultivated as a crop for human consumption. It is also used as a cover crop, the bell bean, which has smaller beans. Varieties with smaller, harder seeds that are fed to horses or other animals are called field bean, tic bean or tick bean. Horse bean, Vicia faba var. equina Pers., is a variety recognized as an accepted name.
Some people suffer from favism, a hemolytic response to the consumption of broad beans, a condition linked to G6PDD. Otherwise the beans, with the outer seed coat removed, can be eaten raw or cooked. In young plants, the outer seed coat can be eaten, and in very young plants, the seed pod can be eaten.

The fava bean or Vicia faba is furiously in flower.. the ants are harvesting "honeydew" or rather, milking the aphids on only one plant. I always find it interesting how the ants like to hang out near the black spot on the fava flower... and tickle that spot... perhaps this is a way of stimulating pollen... I don't know but one day i hope to find out. I got the parent seeds from Salta, Argentina in a market near the Bolivian border....they traveled with me a bit before making it to their new home in California..... this is second generation and they have adapted well.
I made the mistake of planting them with onions.. I read that they do not do as well around onions... so i need to move the onions to the cabbage patch/ bed and find a new companion for the fava...perhaps strawberries or spinach could be planted with them instead...
"Fava beans are rich in L-dopa, a substance used medically in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. L-dopa is also a natriuretic agent, which might help in controlling hypertension." 8- wiki reference.
