Why can the undersea tunnel of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge be "watertight" for 120 years?
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge undersea tunnel, the world's longest road tunnel, can remain "watertight" for 120 years due to its innovative waterproofing techniques. The Chinese construction team housed the tunnel in 33 heavy immersed tubes buried deep under the ocean bed within a meticulously prepared underwater foundation trench. They used a semi-rigid structure concept to strengthen the connection between tubes, ensuring their stability under high load. The team also utilized specific treatment agents and applied new laying techniques to achieve zero-space, full-adhesion waterproof membranes. Completed in 2017, this groundbreaking project sets a high standard in undersea tunnel construction.

$ 19.7 billion USD, 55-km-long Hong Kong -Zhuhai-Macao bridge has failed, it turned out to be a “ghost bridge”.
Recently, one of China's megaprojects has once again come to the public's attention and sparked widespread discussion: the 55-kilometer Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, or HZM Bridge, which took nine years to build with a cost of 19.7 billion USD.
On July 13 this year, netizens said that the current traffic flow of the HZM Bridge is only 500 vehicles per day. This is far below the daily traffic volume of 15,350 to 22,300 as estimated in the feasibility study report.
Last Year, Hong Kong 01 published the traffic statistics of the HZM Bridge from October 2018 to August 2020. The results show that the traffic volume reached the highest in May 2019, with an average of 4,793 vehicles per day. After the outbreak of Covid-19, the traffic volume shrank rapidly, from 3,662 vehicles per day in January 2020, to a peak of 367 vehicles per day from April to August.
The HZM Bridge feasibility study report was finished by the state-owned enterprise CIECC in 2008. The report stated that at the early stage of the bridge's opening, the traffic flow was estimated to be 9,200-14,000 vehicles per day; by 2020, it will increase to an average of 15,350 to 22,300 per day.
Even if we use the highest traffic volume reported by the official media to calculate, the annual revenue of the bridge would be only 270 million RMB (equivalent to 42 million USD). If the operation and maintenance costs and inflation are not taken into account, it will still take 470 years to recover the total investment, while the designed service life span of the bridge is 120 years.
Official media Chinanews.com reported on November 11, 2009, that according to the feasibility study report, the annual operating cost of the HZM Bridge is 460 to 580 million RMB, which includes expenditures on labor, utilities, logistics, and routine maintenance. In addition, an overhaul is required every 10 years, at a cost of 600 million RMB each time. The costs are expected to increase by 2% per year. Therefore, the actual annual expenditure should exceed 520 million RMB (81 million USD).
It is obvious that Guangdong’s plan is mainly to make use of the expensive bridge.
The public generally questioned the failure of this mega project. Many people said it is of little use and some said it is just an image project.
In fact, since the construction of the bridge started in December 2009, it has been criticized by the public for a number of problems, including environmental pollution, construction quality, over-budget, jurisdictional issues, and so on.
It can be seen that, as a megaproject with huge investment, the HZM Bridge is a failure in terms of economic vitality, social and environmental impacts. It remains to be seen whether Guangdong's plan can enhance the operational performance of the bridge.
