Holby City styled as HOLBY CI+Y is a British medical soap television series that airs weekly on BBC One.
The series was created by Tony McHale and Mal Young as a spin-off from the established BBC medical drama Casualty, and premiered on 12 January 1999. It is set in the same hospital as Casualty, in the fictional city of Holby, and featured occasional crossovers of characters and plots with both Casualty (which featured dedicated episodes broadcast as Casualty@Holby City) and the show's 2007 police procedural spin-off HolbyBlue. Its first executive producers were Mal and Johnathan Young, who were succeeded by Kathleen Hutchison from 2003 to 2004, Richard Stokes from 2004 to 2006, McHale from 2006 to 2010, Belinda Campbell from 2010 to 2011, Johnathan Young from 2011 to 2013, and Oliver Kent from 2013. Since the show's initial development, it has become a weekly fixture in the schedule. Holby City airs once a week, with around 52 episodes per series.
The show follows the lives of medical and ancillary staff at the fictional Holby City Hospital. It began with eleven main characters in its first series, all of whom have since left the show. New main characters have been both written in and out of the series since, with a core of around fifteen main actors employed on the serial at any given time. In casting the first series, Young sought out actors who were already well known in the television industry, something which has continued throughout the show's history, with cast members including Patsy Kensit, Jane Asher, Robert Powell, Adrian Edmondson and John Michie
The eighteenth series of the British medical drama television series Holby City commenced airing in the United Kingdom on BBC One on 13 October 2015. The series will consist of 52 episodes.
Production
The series began airing on Tuesday nights on BBC One from 13 October 2015. Oliver Kent continues his role as the executive producer of the show, while Simon Harper serves as the series producer. The series will consist of 52 episodes.
In September 2015, Harper confirmed that Hugh Quarshie (Ric Griffin) had returned to filming, after taking a break during the previous series. Ric's return aired in episode 12, which aired on 29 December 2015. That same month it was announced that the series would also see the arrival of general surgeon Bernie Wolfe, played by Jemma Redgrave. Bernie will be introduced as a patient, before taking up a role on Keller ward. She will be on-screen for six months. Of her casting, Kent commented, "When we dreamed up the character of Bernie Wolfe, we immediately thought of Jemma Redgrave and we were utterly thrilled when she agreed to join the Holby Company. Bernie Wolfe will be a force to be reckoned with and I can't wait to see her locking horns with our established regulars on the wards" Harper later confirmed that Jac Naylor (Rosie Marcel) would make her permanent return from November, following Marcel's maternity leave. Jac's return scenes aired in episode 7, which was broadcast on 24 November 2015.
Holby is a fictional city in the United Kingdom, the setting for the BBCmedical dramasCasualty and Holby City, and the police drama HolbyBlue. It is based on the real city of Bristol, where Casualty was formerly filmed, and is notionally located in the fictional county of Wyvern in South West England, not far from the border with Wales. While Casualty has been filmed in Cardiff since 2011, Holby City is filmed in Elstree, Hertfordshire. Both shows are set in the same fictional Holby City Hospital. Holby has an airport called Holby International.
Holby City Hospital
Holby City Hospital is the fictional hospital within the city in which Casualty and Holby City are set. It is based on the Bristol Royal Infirmary which the original script writers spent time observing in the 1980s in order to garner ideas for Casualty. Although both shows are set in the same hospital, Casualty is primarily filmed in Cardiff, whilst Holby City is filmed in Hertfordshire at the BBC's Elstree Studios. The indoor shots for the first series of Casualty were filmed at BBC Television Centre in London. The exterior shots of the hospital used in Casualty were formerly filmed at the City of Bristol College; location filming later moved to an industrial estate at 51°27′33″N2°34′01″W / 51.459094°N 2.567030°W / 51.459094; -2.567030, close to the interior set of the hospital. It was announced on 15 October 2008 that the BBC was considering moving the filming of Casualty to studios in Cardiff. On 26 March 2009, the BBC confirmed the move. Since late 2011, Casualty has been filmed on a purpose built studio and backlot set at the BBC Roath Lock Studios in CardiffBay51°27′46″N3°09′23″W / 51.4627°N 3.1565°W / 51.4627; -3.1565.
