Steam engines are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separate from the combustion products. Non-combustion heat sources such as solar power, nuclear power or geothermal energy may be used. The ideal thermodynamic cycle used to analyze this process is called the Rankine cycle. In the cycle, water is heated and transforms into steam within a boiler operating at a high pressure. When expanded through pistons or turbines, mechanical work is done. The reduced-pressure steam is then condensed and pumped back into the boiler.
Canadian National Railways 6077 is a preserved 4-8-2 locomotive of Canadian National RailwaysU-1-f class, which were nicknamed Bullet Nosed Bettys.
Construction and initial use
6077 was built in 1944 as part of order of twenty locomotives classified U-1-f. These 4-8-2 or Mountain Type locomotives were built instead of the larger more typical 4-8-4 or Northern Type. The Northern type locomotives are larger and required more steel to make and during World War II a smaller more adaptable engine for general uses were needed. The U-1-f class locomotives were built in 1944 by Montreal Locomotive Works, and were numbered between 6060 and 6079. The series of engines were nicknamed Bullet Nosed Betty for their definitive nose cone.
1945 wreck
In February 1945, a month after its first run, 6077 was involved in a fatal wreck. Approaching Brantford, Ontario, 6077 was attached to a pilot engine when, sensing that the pilot locomotive engineer did not apply the brakes for a sharp bend up ahead, hit the emergency brakes. This caused all the wheels to lock up and skid which made the train much more rigid than if it had been rolling. As a result both locomotives derailed and drop down an embankment. The pilot engine crewmen were seriously injured but all head-end crew of 6077 were killed. The passengers on the rest of the train were not harmed because the wreck had detached the engines from the passenger cars which rolled on and came to a stop at the station.
At least five ships and one shore establishment of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Warrior:
HMS Warrior was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line launched in 1781. She became a receiving ship after 1818, a convict ship after 1840, and was broken up in 1857.
HMS Warrior was the Royal Navy's first ironclad ocean-going armoured battleship, and was launched in 1860. She became a depot ship in 1902, was renamed HMS Vernon III in 1904, and hulked as HMS Warrior in 1923. She was handed over for preservation as Warrior in 1979, and is preserved at Portsmouth as a museum ship.
HMS Warrior was a Duke of Edinburgh class armoured cruiser launched in 1905. She was disabled at the battle of Jutland in 1916 and foundered a day later.
HMS Warrior was a yacht requisitioned by the Royal Navy in 1917 and 1918
HMS Warrior was a Colossus-class light fleet aircraft carrier launched in 1944, having had her name changed from HMS Brave in 1942. She was loaned to Canada from 1946 to 1948, then sold to Argentina and renamed ARA Independencia in 1958.
Warrior displaced 13,550 long tons (13,770t) as built and 14,500 long tons (14,700t) fully loaded. The ship had an overall length of 505feet 4inches (154.0m), a beam of 73feet 6inches (22.4m) and a draught of 27feet 6inches (8.4m). She was powered by four-cylinder triple-expansion steam engines, driving two shafts, which developed a total of 23,650 indicated horsepower (17,640kW) and gave a maximum speed of 23.3 knots (43.2km/h; 26.8mph). The engines were powered by 19 Yarrowwater-tube boilers and six cylindrical boilers. The ship carried a maximum of 2,050 long tons (2,080t) of coal and an additional 600 long tons (610t) of fuel oil that was sprayed on the coal to increase its burn rate. At full capacity, she could steam for 7,960 nautical miles (14,740km; 9,160mi) at a speed of 10 knots (19km/h; 12mph).
Built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, she was originally to be called HMS Brave; the Royal Navy had originally intended to rush her into service for operations in the Indian Ocean during the Second World War, thus she was built without heaters for some onboard equipment since heat was unnecessary in tropical operations.
Royal Canadian Navy service
Acquisition
As the focus of future operations at sea during the Second World War shifted to the Pacific theatre, planning began in May 1944 that the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) would require a larger fleet both in numbers and in size of ships. In the effort to get bigger, the RCN returned the escort carriers currently on loan, Puncher and Nabob in exchange for the loan of two light fleet carriers. The acquisition of two ships, Warrior and Magnificent, was completed in January 1945 with the option to purchase them outright at a later date. Negotiations were completed in May, however the war ended before the ships were completed.
She subsequently served as a storeship and depot ship, and in 1904 was assigned to the Royal Navy's torpedo training school. The ship was converted into an oil jetty in 1927 and remained in that role until 1979, at which point she was donated by the Navy to the Maritime Trust for restoration. The restoration process took eight years, during which many of her features and fittings were either restored or recreated. When this was finished she returned to Portsmouth as a museum ship. Listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, Warrior has been based in Portsmouth since 1987.
In the course of the 15th Dresden Steam Locomotive Meeting on April 16, 2023, two steam locomotives ran parallel on the Tharandt ramp. The show freight train with the steam locomotive 52 8154 was waiting in Tharandt station for the steam locomotive 41 1144 with the passenger train to arrive. The parallel drive then took place via the Tharandter ramp to Klingenberg-Colmnitz. From there, the trains continued separately to Freiberg and finally back to Dresden Central Station. The maximum incline double-track main line is 2.6%.
