Henry VIII of England

Henry VIII (28 June 1491 – 28 January 1547) was King of England from 21 April 1509 until his death. He was Lord, and later assumed the Kingship, of Ireland, and continued the nominal claim by English monarchs to the Kingdom of France. Henry was the second monarch of the Tudor dynasty, succeeding his father, Henry VII.

Besides his six marriages, Henry VIII is known for his role in the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church. His disagreements with the Pope led to his separation of the Church of England from papal authority, with himself, as king, as the Supreme Head of the Church of England and to the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Because his principal dispute was with papal authority, rather than with doctrinal matters, he remained a believer in core Catholic theological teachings despite his excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church. Henry oversaw the legal union of England and Wales with the Laws in Wales Acts 1535 and 1542. He is also well known for a long personal rivalry with both Francis I of France and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, with whom he frequently warred.

List of Acts of the Parliament of England to 1483

This is a list of Acts of the Parliament of England for the years up until 1483.

For Acts passed during the period 17071800 see List of Acts of the Parliament of Great Britain. See also the List of Acts of the Parliament of Scotland and the List of Acts of the Parliament of Ireland.

For Acts passed from 1801 onwards see List of Acts of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. For Acts of the devolved parliaments and assemblies in the United Kingdom, see the List of Acts of the Scottish Parliament from 1999, the List of Acts of the Northern Ireland Assembly, and the List of Acts and Measures of the National Assembly for Wales; see also the List of Acts of the Parliament of Northern Ireland.

For medieval statutes, etc. that are not considered to be Acts of Parliament, see the List of English statutes.

The number shown after each Act's title is its chapter number. Acts are cited using this number, preceded by the year(s) of the reign during which the relevant parliamentary session was held; thus the Union with Ireland Act 1800 is cited as "39 & 40 Geo. 3 c. 67", meaning the 67th Act passed during the session that started in the 39th year of the reign of George III and which finished in the 40th year of that reign. Note that the modern convention is to use Arabic numerals in citations (thus "41 Geo. 3" rather than "41 Geo. III"). Note also that Acts of the last session of the Parliament of Great Britain and the first session of the Parliament of the United Kingdom are both cited as "41 Geo. 3".

List of Acts of the Parliament of England, 1485–1601

Christmas

Christmas or Christmas Day (Old English: Crīstesmæsse, meaning "Christ's Mass") is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed most commonly on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it is prepared for by the season of Advent or the Nativity Fast and initiates the season of Christmastide, which historically in the West lasts twelve days and culminates on Twelfth Night; in some traditions, Christmastide includes an Octave. Christmas Day is a public holiday in many of the world's nations, is celebrated culturally by a large number of non-Christian people, and is an integral part of the holiday season, while some Christian groups reject the celebration. In several countries, celebrating Christmas Eve on December 24 has the main focus rather than December 25, with gift-giving and sharing a traditional meal with the family.

  • The Early Life of Bloody Mary I of England (Part 2)

Mary I of England, also known as "Bloody Mary," was the first queen to rule England in her own right from 1553 to 1558. A devout Catholic, she sought to restore Catholicism after her father, Henry VIII, and brother, Edward VI, had advanced the Protestant Reformation. Her reign was marked by the persecution of Protestants, with hundreds executed at the stake, earning her the infamous nickname. Mary also married Philip II of Spain, but their alliance was unpopular, and she faced resistance at home. Despite her efforts, her reign ended in failure, and England would solidify its Protestant identity under her successor, Elizabeth I.

Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tenminhistory Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=4973164 This episode covers the aftermath of Wars of the Roses through the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII of the Tudor dynasty. It covers Henry VII's attempts to stabilise the kingdom and bring it powerful allies. Most of it focuses on the reign of his son, Henry VIII and his wars with France, his many wives and his notorious break with Rome and the formation of the Church of England. Recommended Books: John Guy, 'Tudor England' - A very detailed introductory book which covers all of the Tudors and particularly focuses on Henry VIII. Gives a good overview of court intrigue, too.

Robert Titler and Norman Jones (eds.), A Companion to Tudor Britain - Much more detailed (best for undergrads) thematically arranged book which focus more on religious, social and economic changes than political. Has good detail concerning Wales and Scotland as well. Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

  • Parliament of England

The Parliament of England was the legislature of the Kingdom of England. In 1066, William of Normandy introduced a feudal system, by which he sought the advice of a council of tenants-in-chief (a person who held land) and ecclesiastics before making laws. In 1215, the tenants-in-chief secured Magna Carta from King John, which established that the king may not levy or collect any taxes (except the feudal taxes to which they were hitherto accustomed), save with the consent of his royal council, which gradually developed into a parliament. Over the centuries, the English Parliament progressively limited the power of the English monarchy which arguably culminated in the English Civil War and the trial and execution of Charles I in 1649. After the restoration of the monarchy under Charles II, a...

  • Who Killed The Princes in the tower?

The Princes in the Tower refers to the apparent murder in England in the 1480s of the deposed King Edward V of England and Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York. These two brothers were the only sons of King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville surviving at the time of their father's death in 1483. When they were 12 and 9 years old, respectively, they were lodged in the Tower of London by their paternal uncle and all-powerful regent the Duke of Gloucester. This was supposedly in preparation for Edward V's forthcoming coronation. However, before the young king could be crowned, he and his brother were declared illegitimate. Gloucester ascended the throne as Richard III. Watch the origins of Halloween here: https://youtu.be/LXIFEJlizr8 Watch What Are The Origins Of 10 Christmas Traditions here:...

  • DID HENRY VII STEAL THE THRONE? Who is the real King of England? Succession to the throne | Tudors

Should HENRY VII have been King of England and by extension were the Tudors the rightful rulers of England between 1485 and 1603? Furthermore, should Henry’s descendants still hold the throne today, or ought the crown to have gone to the descendants of George, Duke of Clarence, who was the brother of Edward IV? It’s a debate I see in the comments under my videos about the Wars of the Roses and the Tudors all the time, with some claiming that Henry took the throne by conquest (and so that’s that) and others maintaining that the true heirs are George’s descendants via his daughter, Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, who was ultimately beheaded on the orders of Henry VIII. It all hinges on what you believe constitutes a true right to the throne. Henry Tudor, the former Earl of Richmond, d...

DID HENRY VII STEAL THE THRONE?

Henry Tudor, the former Earl of Richmond, didn’t have a strong blood claim on the crown as he descended from Edward III’s third son, John of Gaunt, via an originally illegitimate line which was specifically barred from inheriting the realm. He only made his way to the crown by winning the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 and deposing and killing Richard III in the process. However Richard had arguably usurped the throne too, taking it from his nephews Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury (the so-called Princes in the Tower) while his brother and the boys’ father had taken it not once, but twice, from Henry VI, who ultimately died in the Tower of London under very fishy circumstances. Go further back and you see that Henry VI’s grandfather, Henry Bolingbroke (aka Henry IV) had forcibly taken the crown from his cousin Richard II and if you travel all the way back to 1066, you have to concede that England was taken from the Anglo-Saxons by force by William the Conqueror, an illegitimate Frenchman. So does having the ‘right’ blood really matter that much? Is it not just a case of the winner takes it all? After all, if blood is all that matters then Henry’s mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort, had a better claim than him, as did his wife, Elizabeth of York, eldest daughter of Edward IV. As for who should hold the throne now, does the fact that every monarch since Henry VII has Edward IV’s blood in their veins not trump the claims of the descendants of his brother? In this video from History Calling we unpick this complicated line of succession and ask did the victory of Henry VII at Bosworth reset the succession rules of English, later British history, or should we looking for a new royal family? Recommended Books: John Guy, 'Tudor England' - A very detailed introductory book which covers all of the Tudors and particularly focuses on Henry VIII. Gives a good overview of court intrigue, too. Robert Titler and Norman Jones (eds.), A Companion to Tudor Britain - Much more detailed (best for undergrads) thematically arranged book which focus more on religious, social and economic changes than political. Has good detail concerning Wales and Scotland as well. (Same books as last episode but they're both great) Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Check out the Most AMAZING Facts About Elizabeth 1 (The Virgin Queen)! This top 10 list of fun facts about the royal queen of england during the 1500's will surprise you! She wasn’t supposed to be Queen Elizabeth's father was the infamous King Henry VIII. For those who don't know, King Henry VIII had many wives and mistresses, which led to a bit of confusion as to who was going to be on the throne when his time came. However, by the time of his, he had finally gotten a son in the form of Edward, who despite only being 10-years-old at the time, became the King. 9. She praised her mother in secret Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. But before becoming the kings wife she had become his mistress and the people of England were not excited about their relationship. Because the king was married to Katherine at the time before he shunned her off to a nunnery, they labeled her the "Great Wh**e" because of her time with King Henry VIII. 8. She had her faults Queen Elizabeth is praised as one of the greatest queens of England, Wales, and Ireland that history has ever seen. She reigned for 44 years, demonstrating not only that she lived for a long time, but also that means that she wasn’t overthrown or deposed (she died in her bed after falling ill). 7. She was a virgin for a reason In the ancient days of kings and queens, monarchs had to marry to secure the bloodline and ensure a true rite of succession (which was almost always a problem back then). But with Queen Elizabeth I, things changed. Whether tempered by the acts of her father, or just not wanting to give up power to a man, she never married, nor did she ever have a child. Over time she was called "The Virgin Queen", which signified her pure status and love for her country. 6. The Last Tudor The one truly major downside to her not having children or a husband was that Queen Elizabeth I was well and truly the last of her house: The Tudors. This house began with King Henry The VII in 1485, and when Queen Elizabeth died in 1603, her entire family line ended. 5. Queen Elizabeth loved sugar...a lot It may seem odd in the world we live in now, but back in the olden days, things like sugar was a commodity that could only be afforded by the rich. Such as the Queen of England. And in fact, Queen Elizabeth was a bit notorious in certain circles for her sweet tooth. 4. Multilingual One of the reasons that Queen Elizabeth I was such a great leader was because she understood how to deal with other countries, whether they be allies, foes, or something in between. Her Royal Court and advisors were also instrumental during these occasions, however, Elizabeth was never afraid to deal with things herself. To that end, she learned many languages so that she could communicate with other dignitaries from other countries herself. 3. She cared about the poor Elizabeth was praised among both the higher class and lower class citizens for her reign. She was tough at times, but also fair, and she definitely knew when her country was struggling with one thing or another. For example, she knew that the lower class people were suffering, and so to help ease their pain, she would help them by giving them food. 2. It took her hours to get ready Queen Elizabeth loved her appearance, as shown by how she dressed, and how she made sure she looked good in portraits. But when it came to her simply getting ready in the morning or ready for bed, it took a very long time. 1. She died of sadness In Elizabeth’s time, medicine could only do so much and people died of all kinds of thing. And of course kings and queens were no different. For Elizabeth, it is said that her was a more an emotional one, for in the course of a few years, she lost many different friends, family members, and advisors of whom she had a very close connection to.

Parliament of England

After the restoration of the monarchy under Charles II, and the subsequent Glorious Revolution of 1688, the supremacy of Parliament was a settled principle and all future English and later British sovereigns were restricted to the role of constitutional monarchs with limited executive authority. The Act of Union 1707 merged the English Parliament with the Parliament of Scotland to form the Parliament of Great Britain. When the Parliament of Ireland was abolished in 1801, its former members were merged into what was now called the Parliament of the United Kingdom. This video is targeted to blind users.
