Helmstedt–Marienborn border crossing
The Border checkpoint Helmstedt–Marienborn (German: Grenzübergang Helmstedt-Marienborn), named Grenzübergangsstelle Marienborn (GÜSt) (border crossing Marienborn) by the German Democratic Republic (GDR), was the largest and most important border crossing on the Inner German border during the division of Germany. Due to its geographical location, allowing for the shortest land route between West Germany and West Berlin, most transit traffic to and from West Berlin used the Helmstedt-Marienborn crossing. Most travel routes from West Germany to East Germany and Poland also used this crossing. The border crossing existed from 1945 to 1990 and was situated near the East German village of Marienborn at the edge of the Lappwald. The crossing interrupted the Bundesautobahn 2 (A 2) between the junctions Helmstedt-Ost and Ostingersleben.
History
First checkpoints
A checkpoint was established on the site on 1 July 1945, which was on the demarcation line between the British and Soviet occupation zones. Its scope included the interzonal railway traffic as well as the motor vehicle traffic on the Reichsautobahn between Hanover and Berlin. The checkpoint buildings were located directly on the zones' border, and consisted of little more than temporary wooden buildings.

Border control
Border controls are measures taken by a country to monitor or regulate its borders. Border controls are put in place to control the movement of people, animals and goods into as well as out of a country. Specialized government agencies are usually created to perform border controls. Such agencies may perform various functions such as customs, immigration, security, quarantine, beside other functions. Official designations, jurisdictions and command structures of these agencies vary considerably.
History
Border controls were marked by their widespread absence until World War I. John M Keynes, Europe before the War, transit without passport or other formality.
Functions
Border controls exist to:
- collect excise tax
- prevent smuggling of drugs, weapons, endangered species and other illegal or hazardous material
- control the spread of human or animal diseases (see also quarantine)

Border Crossing (novel)
Border Crossing is a novel written by English author Pat Barker, and first published in 2001.
The novel explores the controversial issue of children who have committed murder, in particular the aftermath after their sentence is served out. A tense psychological thriller, Border Crossing investigates the crimes of particularly violent children, the notion of evil and the possibility of redemption.
Plot synopsis
When Tom Seymour, a child psychologist, plunges into a river to save a young man from suicide, he unwittingly reopens a chapter from his past he had hoped to forget. For Tom already knows the young man as Danny Miller. When Danny was ten, Tom presented evidence that helped commit him to prison for the murder of the elderly Lizzie Parks. Danny, full of suppressed memory and now free from prison, turns to Tom to help him recount what really happened, and discover the truth.
Reluctantly, Tom is drawn back into Danny's world, a place where the border between good and evil, innocence and guilt are blurred and confused. But when Danny's demands on Tom become extreme, Tom wonders whether he has crossed the line between the professional and personal relationship, speculating upon, but never realising, the perilous danger he is in until it is almost too late.

The DDR border control post at Helmstedt - Marienborn was the largest border point within the entire Soviet empire. The point controlled the motorway leading to Berlin and beyond from West Germany. Whereas there were few problems for people getting in if they were going to Berlin, it was a different story for those going to any other destination. And of course it was designed to stop people getting out. Most of the frontier fence is no longer there and in places it is no longer obvious where it was. However many remains are still evident and in some places have been preserved. In other places they are still standing, but abandoned and the broken glass and chipped paintwork demonstrates their fate. So war auch die Region Helmstedt mit ihrem Autobahnkontrollpunkt Helmstedt/ Marienborn direkt betroffen. Ab 21.30 Uhr fuhren einige Helmstedter zum Kontrollpunkt, als sich die Grenze tatsächlich öffnete wurden es immer mehr. Bald standen 400 Bundesbürger aus dem Braunschweiger Umland und sogar aus Hannover am Straßenrand und betrachteten staunend, wie die ersten "Trabis" die Grenze passierten. Die Menschen aus der DDR fuhren unter dem Knallen von Sektkorken und unter den Blicken begeisterter Zuschauer in die Bundesrepublik ein. The journey starts off in Helmstedt in Lower Saxony, with a visit to 246 Provost Company Royal Military Police, AutoBahn Control Detachment. Entering East Germany via Allied Checkpoint Alpha near helmstedt, then across the fearsome Inner German Border Death Strip. It covers the actions at the DDR/Soviet Border station at Marienborn. The threats encountered from The Stasi and the DDR VolksPolizei.
Finally arriving at Allied Checkpoint Bravo at Dreilinden in Berlin, with its famous WW2 Soviet War Memorial (Panzerdenkmal)

The DDR border control post at Helmstedt - Marienborn was the largest border point within the entire Soviet empire.

There is an excellent museum at the former Helsmstedt - Marienborn border crossing which does not take much of a detour for those travelling along this road.
This film also shows photographs of Hötensleben, 12km south of Marienborn where the wall has been preserved. Here the wall was breached on 23 November 1989 and traffic allowed to run both ways for the first time in many years. However the locals preserved the wall in many places.
I crossed the border point at Marienborn several times from 1982 - 1987 both by train and by car. It was extremely interesting to see it from the other side.

Am 9. November 1989 wurde die Grenze der DDR zum ersten Mal geöffnet. So war auch die Region Helmstedt mit ihrem Autobahnkontrollpunkt Helmstedt/ Marienborn direkt betroffen. Ab 21.30 Uhr fuhren einige Helmstedter zum Kontrollpunkt, als sich die Grenze tatsächlich öffnete wurden es immer mehr. Bald standen 400 Bundesbürger aus dem Braunschweiger Umland und sogar aus Hannover am Straßenrand und betrachteten staunend, wie die ersten "Trabis" die Grenze passierten. Die Menschen aus der DDR fuhren unter dem Knallen von Sektkorken und unter den Blicken begeisterter Zuschauer in die Bundesrepublik ein. Sogar der niedersächsische Ministerpräsident Ernst Albrecht fuhr an die Grenze um sich von dem historischen Augenblick einen Eindruck zu verschaffen.

Yet no sooner are fixes made than another column is sawed, torched and chiseled for large groups of migrants to enter, usually with no agents in sight. The breaches stretch about 30 miles (48 kilometers) on a washboard gravel road west of Lukeville, an Arizona desert town that consists of an official border crossing, restaurant and duty-free shop. (ASSOCIATED PRESS) Hundreds of dates are written on concrete-filled steel columns erected along the U.S. border with Mexico to memorialize when the Border Patrol has repaired illicit openings in the would-be barriers. Yet no sooner are fixes made than another column is sawed, torched and chiseled for large groups of migrants to enter, usually with no agents in sight.
The breaches stretch about 30 miles (48 kilometers) on a washboard gravel road west of Lukeville, an Arizona desert town that consists of an official border crossing, restaurant and duty-free shop. The repair dates are mostly since spring, when the flat desert region dotted with saguaro cactus became the busiest corridor for illegal crossings.
A Border Patrol tour in Arizona for news organizations, including The Associated Press, showed improvements in custody conditions and processing times, but flows are overwhelming. The huge spike in migrants and resulting chaos at various border locations have increased frustration with the Biden administration’s immigration policies and put pressure on Congress to reach a deal on asylum. The numbers have nudged the White House and some congressional Democrats to consider major limits to asylum as part of a deal for Ukraine aid.
As Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas left closed-door talks with congressional leaders Friday, dozens of migrants from Senegal, Guinea and Mexico walked along the Arizona border wall built during Donald Trump's presidency, looking to surrender to agents. A Mexican woman walked briskly with her two daughters and five grandchildren, ages 2 to 7, after being dropped off by a bus in Mexico and instructed by guides.
“They told us where to go; to go straight," said Alicia Santay, of Guatemala, who waited in a Border Patrol tent in Lukeville for initial processing. Santay, 22, and her 16-year-old sister hoped to join their father in New York.
The dates when wall breaches were fixed are often bunched together, written in white letters against rust-colored steel. One cluster showed five dates from April 12 to Oct. 3. On Friday, agents drove looking for openings and found one on a column that was repaired twice — on Oct. 31 and again Dec. 5.
Smuggling organizations remove a few inches from the bottom of 30-foot (9.1-meter) steel poles, which agents say can take as little as a half-hour. Columns sway back and forth, like a cantilever swing, creating ample space for large groups to walk through. Welders often attach metal bars horizontally across several columns to prevent swinging, but there are plenty of other places to saw.
Agents say it takes up to an hour to drive from Lukeville along the gravel road to discover breaches — a large chunk of time when tending to so many migrants in custody.
“Our officers and agents are responding to large groups of migrants, which means that some of our agents aren’t on the line, not really monitoring for some of those cuts," said Troy Miller, U.S. Customs and Border Protection's acting commissioner. “If we don’t have anybody to respond, then you’re going to see what you’re seeing.”

The number of daily arrivals is “unprecedented,” Miller said, with illegal crossings topping 10,000 some days across the border in December. On Monday, CBP suspended cross-border rail traffic in the Texas cities of Eagle Pass and El Paso in response to migrants riding freight trains through Mexico, hopping off just before entering the U.S. The Lukeville border crossing is closed, as is a pedestrian entry in San Diego, so that more officials can be assigned to the migrant influx.
Arrests for illegal crossings topped 2 million for the first time each of the U.S. government's last two budget years, reflecting technological changes that have increased global mobility and a host of ills prompting people to leave their homes, including wealth inequality, natural disasters, political repression and organized crime.
Miller said solutions go well beyond CBP, which includes the Border Patrol, to other agencies whose responsibilities include long-term detention and asylum screenings. On cuts in the wall, Miller said Mexican authorities “need to step up.”

Part of my Cold War series: is a sort of "Battlefield Tour".. by using present day and archival footage, also British Army Information films. In this video I'm going to reconstruct of the experience of using the Transit West Berlin Corridor across the Inner German Border and the Berlin Wall from the BDR to West Berlin during of the last years of The Cold War (1987-1989) before the Soviet union collapse of 1991.

The West Berlin Transit Corridor was the only authorised route the Soviet and East German Authorities permitted for Allied Military and vetted West German to citizens travel between West Germany and West Berlin during The Cold War and Division of Germany. It was a nerve racking experience passing through a the Communist Totalitarian state of East Germany, and for military travellers, being on your own travelling through "enemy territory"
The journey starts off in Helmstedt in Lower Saxony, with a visit to 246 Provost Company Royal Military Police, AutoBahn Control Detachment. Entering East Germany via Allied Checkpoint Alpha near helmstedt, then across the fearsome Inner German Border Death Strip. It covers the actions at the DDR/Soviet Border station at Marienborn. The threats encountered from The Stasi and the DDR VolksPolizei.
Finally arriving at Allied Checkpoint Bravo at Dreilinden in Berlin, with its famous WW2 Soviet War Memorial (Panzerdenkmal)

The DDR border control post at Helmstedt - Marienborn was the largest border point within the entire Soviet empire.
The point controlled the motorway leading to Berlin and beyond from West Germany.
Whereas there were few problems for people getting in if they were going to Berlin, it was a different story for those going to any other destination.
And of course it was designed to stop people getting out.
Most of the frontier fence is no longer there and in places it is no longer obvious where it was. However many remains are still evident and in some places have been preserved. In other places they are still standing, but abandoned and the broken glass and chipped paintwork demonstrates their fate.
There is an excellent museum at the former Helsmstedt - Marienborn border crossing which does not take much of a detour for those travelling along this road.
This film also shows photographs of Hötensleben, 12km south of Marienborn where the wall has been preserved. Here the wall was breached on 23 November 1989 and traffic allowed to run both ways for the first time in many years. However the locals preserved the wall in many places.
I crossed the border point at Marienborn several times from 1982 - 1987 both by train and by car. It was extremely interesting to see it from the other side.

Am 9. November 1989 wurde die Grenze der DDR zum ersten Mal geöffnet. So war auch die Region Helmstedt mit ihrem Autobahnkontrollpunkt Helmstedt/ Marienborn direkt betroffen. Ab 21.30 Uhr fuhren einige Helmstedter zum Kontrollpunkt, als sich die Grenze tatsächlich öffnete wurden es immer mehr. Bald standen 400 Bundesbürger aus dem Braunschweiger Umland und sogar aus Hannover am Straßenrand und betrachteten staunend, wie die ersten "Trabis" die Grenze passierten. Die Menschen aus der DDR fuhren unter dem Knallen von Sektkorken und unter den Blicken begeisterter Zuschauer in die Bundesrepublik ein. Sogar der niedersächsische Ministerpräsident Ernst Albrecht fuhr an die Grenze um sich von dem historischen Augenblick einen Eindruck zu verschaffen.

Op 9 november 1989, opende de grens van de DDR voor de eerste keer. Ook de regio Helmstedt werd direct getroffen met hun snelweg checkpoint Helmstedt / Marienborn vanaf 21.30 uur reden enkele Helmstedter naar de controlepost, en als de grens daadwerkelijk geopend werd werden het snel steeds meer. Al snel waren 400 Duitse burgers uit de omgeving en ook uit de verdere omgeving zoals Braunschweig en zelfs Hannover op de weg en keken met verbazing als de eerste "Trabis " die grens passeerden. De mensen uit de DDR reden onder de knallende champagne kurken en onder de ogen van enthousiaste toeschouwers in de Bondsrepubliek. Zelfs de minister-president van Nedersaksen, Ernst Albrecht reed naar de grens om een indruk te van het historische moment te krijgen

Helmstedt–Marienborn border crossing
The Border checkpoint Helmstedt–Marienborn (German: Grenzübergang Helmstedt-Marienborn), named Grenzübergangsstelle Marienborn (GÜSt) (border crossing Marienborn) by the German Democratic Republic (GDR), was the largest and most important border crossing on the Inner German border during the division of Germany. Due to its geographical location, allowing for the shortest land route between West Germany and West Berlin, most transit traffic to and from West Berlin used the Helmstedt-Marienborn crossing. Most travel routes from West Germany to East Germany and Poland also used this crossing. The border crossing existed from 1945 to 1990 and was situated near the East German village of Marienborn at the edge of the Lappwald. The crossing interrupted the Bundesautobahn 2 (A 2) between the junctions Helmstedt-Ost and Ostingersleben.
History
First checkpoints
A checkpoint was established on the site on 1 July 1945, which was on the demarcation line between the British and Soviet occupation zones. Its scope included the interzonal railway traffic as well as the motor vehicle traffic on the Reichsautobahn between Hanover and Berlin. The checkpoint buildings were located directly on the zones' border, and consisted of little more than temporary wooden buildings.

(ASSOCIATED PRESS) Hundreds of dates are written on concrete-filled steel columns erected along the U.S. border with Mexico to memorialize when the Border Patrol has repaired illicit openings in the would-be barriers. Yet no sooner are fixes made than another column is sawed, torched and chiseled for large groups of migrants to enter, usually with no agents in sight.
The breaches stretch about 30 miles (48 kilometers) on a washboard gravel road west of Lukeville, an Arizona desert town that consists of an official border crossing, restaurant and duty-free shop. The repair dates are mostly since spring, when the flat desert region dotted with saguaro cactus became the busiest corridor for illegal crossings.
A Border Patrol tour in Arizona for news organizations, including The Associated Press, showed improvements in custody conditions and processing times, but flows are overwhelming. The huge spike in migrants and resulting chaos at various border locations have increased frustration with the Biden administration’s immigration policies and put pressure on Congress to reach a deal on asylum. The numbers have nudged the White House and some congressional Democrats to consider major limits to asylum as part of a deal for Ukraine aid.
As Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas left closed-door talks with congressional leaders Friday, dozens of migrants from Senegal, Guinea and Mexico walked along the Arizona border wall built during Donald Trump's presidency, looking to surrender to agents. A Mexican woman walked briskly with her two daughters and five grandchildren, ages 2 to 7, after being dropped off by a bus in Mexico and instructed by guides.
“They told us where to go; to go straight," said Alicia Santay, of Guatemala, who waited in a Border Patrol tent in Lukeville for initial processing. Santay, 22, and her 16-year-old sister hoped to join their father in New York.
The dates when wall breaches were fixed are often bunched together, written in white letters against rust-colored steel. One cluster showed five dates from April 12 to Oct. 3. On Friday, agents drove looking for openings and found one on a column that was repaired twice — on Oct. 31 and again Dec. 5.
Smuggling organizations remove a few inches from the bottom of 30-foot (9.1-meter) steel poles, which agents say can take as little as a half-hour. Columns sway back and forth, like a cantilever swing, creating ample space for large groups to walk through. Welders often attach metal bars horizontally across several columns to prevent swinging, but there are plenty of other places to saw.
Agents say it takes up to an hour to drive from Lukeville along the gravel road to discover breaches — a large chunk of time when tending to so many migrants in custody.
“Our officers and agents are responding to large groups of migrants, which means that some of our agents aren’t on the line, not really monitoring for some of those cuts," said Troy Miller, U.S. Customs and Border Protection's acting commissioner. “If we don’t have anybody to respond, then you’re going to see what you’re seeing.”

The number of daily arrivals is “unprecedented,” Miller said, with illegal crossings topping 10,000 some days across the border in December. On Monday, CBP suspended cross-border rail traffic in the Texas cities of Eagle Pass and El Paso in response to migrants riding freight trains through Mexico, hopping off just before entering the U.S. The Lukeville border crossing is closed, as is a pedestrian entry in San Diego, so that more officials can be assigned to the migrant influx.
Arrests for illegal crossings topped 2 million for the first time each of the U.S. government's last two budget years, reflecting technological changes that have increased global mobility and a host of ills prompting people to leave their homes, including wealth inequality, natural disasters, political repression and organized crime.
Miller said solutions go well beyond CBP, which includes the Border Patrol, to other agencies whose responsibilities include long-term detention and asylum screenings. On cuts in the wall, Miller said Mexican authorities “need to step up.”

Images from Eagle Pass, Texas show thousands of migrants filling entire fields as they line the Rio Grande and wait hours to be processed. DHS officials tell NBC News over 12,000 migrants crossed the U.S. border on Monday alone – the largest number of migrant crossings ever recorded in a single day.
