Hell's Kitchen, also known as Clinton and Midtown West, is a neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. It is traditionally considered to be bordered by 34th Street in the south, 59th Street in the north, Eighth Avenue in the east, and the Hudson River to the west. The area provides transport, medical, and warehouse infrastructure support to Manhattan's Midtown business district.
Once a bastion of poor and working-class Irish Americans, Hell's Kitchen's proximity to Midtown has changed its personality since the 1970s. The 1969 City Planning Commission's 1969 Plan for New York City reported that development pressures related to its Midtown location were driving people of modest means from the area, and the gritty reputation that Hell's Kitchen developed afterward kept real estate prices below those of most other areas of Manhattan. Since the early 1990s, the area has been gentrifying, and rents skyrocketed. Located close to both Broadway theatres and Actors Studio training school, Hell's Kitchen has long been a home to learning and practicing actors.
Hell’s Kitchen is one of the names of a famous painting showing many of the eccentrics living in the Newcastle area in the early 19th century.
Background
Around the end of the 18th century and the early and mid 19th century there were many characters frequenting the town centre and Quayside of old Newcastle. These were characters who were described as “Worthies”, “Props” or “Eccentrics” and would later be more gently described as “unfortunates”. All had some form of physical or mental disability, to different degrees, but were looked upon as “unfortunates” and generally liked, respected and looked after by the population of hard working inhabitants.
The painting
In or around 1817 the Devonport born, (now resident in Newcastle) painter, Henry Perlee Parker, painted his now famous picture of many of these characters. It shows 14 people (and a dog), all persons living in the area at the time.
The painting is now known in some quarters as “Hells Kitchen".
This was the nickname of a room in The Flying Horse (later named the Princess Hotel followed by The Golden Bengal Indian Restaurant) in the Groat Market (off Collingwood Street), Newcastle. which was the setting for the painting.
Gordon Ramsay and Marino Monferrato returned as head chef and Maître d' respectively.Season 10 winner Christina Wilson replaced Andrea Van Willigan as sous chef for the red team, while Aaron Mitrano replaced James Avery as sous chef for the blue team. Wilson is the second former Hell's Kitchen winner to return as one of Ramsay's sous chefs, the first being Season 2 winner, Heather West, who was the red kitchen's sous chef for Season 6. Jason Thompson also returned as narrator for the first time since Season 12.
