Why Hegel knew there would be days like these
The German philosopher Hegel helps us to understand that progress in societies is never linear, and that these societies may have to go through a variety of reversals before advancing, a process he termed ‘the dialectic.’

Madness as a Gateway to Humanity (A Philosophical Journey through Hegel, Žižek, and Foucault)
Hegel redefines madness as an essential step in human evolution rather than a random deviation from reality. Unlike traditional views that see madness as mere detachment from reality, Hegel considers it a crucial threshold between animality and humanity, marking a shift towards self-consciousness. This view is shared and expanded upon by Slavoj Žižek, who sees madness as a radical break that frees individuals from the automatic, natural state, enabling them to create an independent identity. In this context, madness becomes an opportunity for individuals to reorganize their inner world, transcending mechanical routines and moving beyond instinctual patterns.
Hegel further argues that humanity responds to madness through mechanical habits and routines, which act as stabilizing forces. This...

This "mechanical repetition" does not require full comprehension but instead fosters social equilibrium. According to Žižek, this repetitive structure within society—institutions, laws, and customs—contains the creative force of madness, transforming it into constructive energy within a larger social framework.
Hegel’s dialectical perspective views madness as an ongoing, experimental process that leads to a deeper understanding of human nature. It allows people to transcend animalistic spontaneity and find new potentials for human expression. Michel Foucault also sees madness as holding critical and revolutionary potential, revealing the inherent fragility of social systems and enabling contemplation of alternatives beyond the current order. For Foucault, madness invites individuals to experience and experiment with intellectual and existential possibilities outside traditional norms.
In conclusion, Hegel, Žižek, and Foucault collectively suggest that madness is not simply a mental disorder but an essential path toward achieving humanity. By separating individuals from biological constraints, madness facilitates the construction of a conscious self. While it may seem destabilizing, madness is the transformative force that fosters new equilibriums and social habits, ultimately enriching human experience and promoting a more adaptable, humane system.
