Hebron (Arabic: الخليلal-Khalīl; Hebrew:חֶבְרוֹן, Standard Hebrew: Ḥevron; ISO 259-3: Ḥebron) is a Palestinian city located in the southern West Bank, 30km (19mi) south of Jerusalem. Nestled in the Judaean Mountains, it lies 930 meters (3,050ft) above sea level. It is the largest city in the West Bank, and the second largest in the Palestinian territories after Gaza, and home to 215,452 Palestinians (2016), and between 500 and 850 Jewish settlers concentrated in Otniel settlement and around the old quarter. The city is divided into two sectors: H1, controlled by the Palestinian Authority and H2, roughly 20% of the city, administered by Israel. The settlers are governed by their own municipal body, the Committee of the Jewish Community of Hebron. The city is most notable for containing the traditional burial site of the biblical Patriarchs and Matriarchs, within the Cave of the Patriarchs. It is therefore considered the second-holiest city in Judaism after Jerusalem. The city is venerated by Jews, Christians, and Muslims for its association with Abraham. It is viewed as a holy city in Islam and Judaism.
According to the Torah, Hebron or Chebrown (Hebrew:חֶבְרוֹןḤeḇrōn) was a son of Kohath and grandson of Levi, consequently being the brother of Amram and uncle of Aaron, Miriam, and Moses. Hebron is portrayed in the text as the founder of the Hebronite faction of Levites; however, on some occasions, the Book of Chronicles treats the Hebronites as being distinct from the descendants of Kohath.
No further details of Hebron's life are given by the Bible, and according to biblical scholars the genealogy for Levi's descendants is actually an aetiologicalmyth, reflecting popular perception of the connections between different Levite factions;textual scholars attribute the genealogy to the Book of Generations, a document originating from a similar religiopolitical group and date to the priestly source). Biblical scholars believe that the Hebronites gained their name as a result of originating at the Levite-dominated city named Hebron, meaning league. More likely and in accordance with Biblical chronology the name given to Hebron originates with the city of the same name established at the time of Abraham some 400 years prior.
Before becoming a territory, varying cultures of indigenous peoples and historic Native Americans inhabited Indiana for thousands of years. Since its founding as a territory, settlement patterns in Indiana have reflected regional cultural segmentation present in the Eastern United States; the state's northernmost tier was settled primarily by people from New England and New York, Central Indiana by migrants from the Mid-Atlantic states and from adjacent Ohio, and Southern Indiana by settlers from the Southern states, particularly Kentucky and Tennessee.
Though soon outclassed by newer vessels, Indiana was to enjoy a substantial 36-year career, a highlight of which was her transportation of United States President Ulysses S. Grant on the first leg of his celebrated 1877–78 world tour. After 24 years of transatlantic crossings, Indiana was sold for Pacific service, before being requisitioned as a troopship for service during the Spanish–American War. She was wrecked off Isla Santa Margarita, Mexico, in 1909.
Development
The four Pennsylvania class liners were constructed at a cost of $520,000 each by William Cramp & Sons on behalf of the American Steamship Company (ASC), a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. The Railroad intended to utilize the vessels to bring European immigrants direct to Philadelphia, thus ensuring the company a steady stream of customers. In recognition of this purpose, the four ships—Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio—were named after the four states serviced by the Railroad. Design of the ships was entrusted to Charles H. Cramp of the Cramp & Sons shipyard, and Barnabas H. Bartol, a director of the ASC.
Hebron: The Reality of Israeli Settlement in Palestine // Behind The Wall
It’s widely known that there are Jewish settlements in Palestinian territory, but very few people know what the lives of people are actually like in these isolated districts.
I traveled to Hebron, a Palestinian city that has Israeli settlements right in the middle of the city itself, and managed to enter a Jewish neighborhood surrounded by barbed wire fences and checkpoints.
In this video, I’m going to share what I saw and experienced in this controversial section of Hebron.
This video is the second video of my Hebron trip, so if you haven’t seen the previous one, please check it out as well↓

Hebron: A City Divided Between Palestinians and Israelis // Behind The Wall
The Israeli–Palestinian conflict is one of the world's most enduring disputes, which involves disagreements about numerous Israeli settlements in the West Bank of Palestine.
Among them all, the city of Hebron has one peculiarity:
Hebron is the only city in Palestine where Jewish settlements are located right in the middle of the city itself.
During my Palestine trip, I saw the critical situation of the city with my own eyes, where a bunch of walls, barbed wire fences and checkpoints are disconnecting peoples’ lives in the city center.
In this video, I’m going to share what I experienced in the divided city of Hebron.

Why were Jews Murdered in the Hebron Riots Massacre?
In the summer of 1929, the British-controlled region of Palestine saw growing fault lines between Arabs and Jews. Tensions rose until they erupted one fateful day. In the city of Hebron a riot quickly turned into a gruesome massacre, and in a mere two hours, 67 Jews were murdered. The Hebron Riots were the catalyst for the week of terror that followed. In total 133 Jews and 116 Arabs were killed and most peaceful Jewish-Arab coexistence came to an unfortunate end.

In West Bank city of Hebron, violence soars between Israeli settlers and Palestinians
Hebron is the richest and most populated city in the West Bank. Tensions between Israeli settlers and Palestinian locals have been on the rise there since the October 7 Hamas attacks and Israel's retaliatory air strikes on Gaza. Israeli soldiers multiply patrols in the Old City of Hebron to protect some 800 Israeli settlers who occupy houses around the Cave of the Patriarchs, a sacred shrine to both Jews and Muslims. Our reporters James Andre and Julie Dungelhoeff went to meet members of both communities.
