Nelle Harper Lee (born April 28, 1926) is an American novelist widely known for her novel To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960. It was immediately successful, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and has become a classic of modern American literature. The plot and characters are loosely based on her observations of her family and neighbors, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936, when she was 10years old. The novel deals with the irrationality of adult attitudes towards race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s, as seen through the eyes of two children. The novel was inspired by the racist attitudes she observed as a child in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. Though Lee published only this single book for half a century, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contribution to literature. Lee has received numerous honorary degrees, and declined to speak on each occasion. Lee assisted close friend Truman Capote in his research for the book In Cold Blood (1966).
Mary Badham (born October 7, 1952) is an American actress, known for her portrayal of Jean Louise "Scout" Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. At the time, Badham (aged 10) was the youngest actress ever nominated in this category.
Career
Mary Badham had no film acting experience before being cast in To Kill a Mockingbird. The Oscar in her category went to another child actress, Patty Duke for The Miracle Worker. During filming, Badham became particularly close to actor Gregory Peck, who played Scout's father, Atticus Finch; she kept in touch with him, always calling him 'Atticus', until his death in 2003.

Harper Lee and her true crime story
For years the author of "To Kill a Mockingbird," and a best friend of "In Cold Blood" author Truman Capote, had researched and written a true-crime novel based on a series of deaths in Alabama, for which a small-town preacher had been rumored to be responsible. Though never found guilty, the reverend did collect life insurance policies on several family members who'd mysteriously died, until he himself was murdered by a vigilante. Rita Braver reports on Lee's fascination with the case, and talks with Casey Cep, author of the book "Furious Hours: Murder, Fraud, and the Last Trial of Harper Lee."

John Badham on THE WIZARD OF OZ
A storybook musical staged with the exuberance of a vaudeville show and the wit of a Marx Brothers movie. Judy Garland plays Dorothy Gale, a lonely farm girl swallowed by a tornado and dropped into a rainbow-hued Xanadu inhabited by singing-dancing doppelgängers of her Kansas cronies. This 1939 classic stays fresh as a daisy thanks to its brilliant tunes, cornpone wisdom and the timeless appeal of its cast.

In 1964, Harper Lee talked with WQXR host Roy Newquist for an interview in New York. For the first time, that interview is now available to listen to online.

Harper Lee's sequel to "To Kill a Mockingbird" was released today. While some fans line up at bookstores to buy the novel, others are skeptical of the controversial reviews and evolution of Lee's characters. By Liz Hamel.

She was only 10 years old when she played the iconic character Scout Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Now, actor Mary Badham is taking the stage in the first national tour of the theatrical version of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” but as a totally different character. This time, Mary is playing Scout’s mean neighbor, Mrs. DuBose. Inside Edition caught up with her and her castmates backstage at a rehearsal studio in New York City.
Mary Badham had never acted before landing the role as Scout in the iconic film To Kill A Mockingbird. Mary reminisces on working alongside Gregory Peck and Robert Duvall. She talks about Harper 'Miss Nell' Lee, working with Robert Redford and Natalie Wood. Plus Mary opens up about returning to To Kill A Mockingbird - but this time on stage. Alongside The Waltons' star Richard Thomas.
