Harpenden
Coordinates: 51°49′03″N 0°21′09″W / 51.8175°N 0.3524°W / 51.8175; -0.3524
Harpenden is a town in the City of St Albans district in the county of Hertfordshire, England. The town's population is just under 30,000. Harpenden is a commuter town, with a direct rail connection into London and property prices well over double the national average. Geographically it is located between (and a short distance from) two much larger neighbours: Luton town (to the north) and the city of St Albans (to the south). It is flanked by the villages of Redbourn (to the west) and Wheathampstead (to the east).
History
There is evidence of pre-Roman Belgic farmers in the area. In 1867 several items were found including a bronze escutcheon, rams-head shaped mounts, and a bronze bowl.
There are Roman remains in land around Harpenden, for instance the site of a mausoleum in the park at Rothamsted. A tumulus near the river Lea was opened in the 1820s and it contained a stone sarcophagus of Romano-Celtic origin. Five objects dating from around 150 AD, were inside including a glass jug with a Mediterranean stamp and samian ware dishes used for libations.

Hertfordshire (
i/ˈhɑːrtfərdʃɪər/; abbreviated Herts) is a county in southern England, bordered by Bedfordshire to the north, Cambridgeshire to the north-east, Essex to the east, Buckinghamshire to the west and Greater London to the south.
Four towns have between 50,000 and 100,000 residents: Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, Watford and St Albans. The county town, Hertford, once the main market town for the medieval agricultural county ranks 13th in population today deriving its name from a hart (stag) and a ford used as the components of the county's coat of arms and flag. Elevations are high for the region in the north and west. These reach over 240m in the western projection around Tring which is in the Chilterns. The county's borders are approximately the watersheds of the Colne and Lea, which flow southwards each accompanied by a canal. Hertfordshire is at the edge of the London Basin and most of its undeveloped land is agricultural and protected as Metropolitan Green Belt. The volume of intact medieval and Tudor buildings surpasses London, in places in well-preserved conservation areas, especially in St Albans which includes some remains of Verulamium, the town where in the third century AD an early recorded British martyrdom took place. Saint Alban, a Romano-British soldier, took the place of a Christian priest and was beheaded on Holywell Hill. His martyr's cross of a yellow saltire on a blue background is reflected in the flag and coat of arms of Hertfordshire.

Hertfordshire (European Parliament constituency)
Hertfordshire was a constituency of the European Parliament located in the United Kingdom, electing one Member of the European Parliament by the first-past-the-post electoral system. Created in 1979 for the first elections to the European Parliament, it was abolished in 1999 on the adoption of proportional representation for European elections in the United Kingdom. It was succeeded by the East of England region.
Boundaries
On its creation in 1979, it consisted of the parliamentary constituencies of Hertford and Stevenage, Hertfordshire East, Hertfordshire South, Hertfordshire South West, St Albans, Watford and Welwyn and Hatfield.
After the 1984 boundary changes based on the new UK parliamentary constituencies created in 1983, it consisted of the constituencies of Broxbourne, Hertford and Stortford, Hertsmere, St. Albans, South West Hertfordshire, Watford and Welwyn Hatfield. Stevenage was transferred to Bedfordshire South.
1994 saw further boundary changes and the constituency now consisted of Hertsmere, North Hertfordshire, St. Albans, South West Hertfordshire, Watford, Welwyn Hatfield and West Hertfordshire. Broxbourne as well as Hertford and Stortford were now part of Essex West and Hertfordshire East. North Hertfordshire and West Hertfordshire had previously been part of Bedfordshire South.

Hertfordshire (UK Parliament constituency)
Hertfordshire was a county constituency covering the county of Hertfordshire in England. It returned two Knights of the Shire to the House of Commons of England until 1707, then to the House of Commons of Great Britain until 1800, and to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1290 until 1832. The Reform Act 1832 gave the county a third seat with effect from the 1832 general election.
Elections were held using the bloc vote system, when contested. However, even after the 1832 reforms, contested elections were the exception: of the 17 elections from 1832 to 1880, 9 were uncontested, including the 1880 general election. In such cases all the nominated candidates were returned without a vote.
History
The constituency consisted of the historic county of Hertfordshire. (Although Hertfordshire contained two boroughs, Hertford and St Albans, each of which elected two MPs in its own right, these were not excluded from the county constituency, and owning property within the borough could confer a vote at the county election.)

Harpenden Railway Station Improvements

As part of this, we are also investigating the improvement of the pedestrian and cycle connection between the railway station and its surroundings, in particular Harpenden town centre. This video illustrates how the Harpenden Railway Station would look like after the implementation of the project.

Detectives investigating an assault at a petrol station in Harpenden are appealing for witnesses and information. At around 7.10pm on Thursday, December 18, a grey Peugeot believed to be either a 406 or 407 estate was driven onto the forecourt of the Tesco Express service station in Lower Luton Road. Staff in store were made aware that the vehicle had tape obscuring its number plates. A staff member, a man in his mid-20s, went out to speak to the driver but the car then collided with him. It drove away from the scene. The car is believed to have contained up to four people; the occupants were described as men with dark complexions aged between their late 20s and early 40s. Detective Constable Robert Muir is investigating and said: “The member of staff was very lucky to not have been m...

Harpenden Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and around 25 miles north, and slightly west, of central London, is the town of Harpenden. In 1060 King Edward the Confessor granted the area of Harpenden, and the neighbouring village of Wheathampstead, to Westminster Abbey. It was gradually cleared of woodland for farming and settlement. The earliest mention of a church in Harpenden dates from 1221, in reference to St Nicholas Church (seen at the end of the walk - see the timestamps for reference). The name 'Harpenden' is derived from 'herpe dene’, meaning ‘the military path through the valley'. The Roman settlement of Verulamium (now St Albans) lies a few miles away with a number of roads connected to it. One of them, which linked Cheshunt and Dunstable, passed through Harpenden and followed a route along the dry valley which is now used by the A1081 road. The dry valley is one of three valleys surrounding Harpenden, the other two being the valleys of the River Ver and River Lea respectively.
For centuries, Harpenden was a small agricultural village. Around the 18th and 19th century a new industry emerged - the straw plait industry. Due to the abundance of wheat in the area, straw hat making became the main industry in Harpenden. The industry itself was centred around the nearby towns of Luton and Dunstable, with nearby villages selling their plait to the hat manufacturers.
In 1860 the railway arrived in Harpenden. A second station opened in 1868 by the Midland Railway. The original station was later closed in the 1960s due to the Beeching cuts, whilst the second is in use to this day on the Midland Main Line. Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and around 25 miles north, and slightly west, of central London, is the town of Harpenden.
In 1060 King Edward the Confessor granted the area of Harpenden, and the neighbouring village of Wheathampstead, to Westminster Abbey. It was gradually cleared of woodland for farming and settlement. The earliest mention of a church in Harpenden dates from 1221, in reference to St Nicholas Church (seen at the end of the walk - see the timestamps for reference).
The name 'Harpenden' is derived from 'herpe dene’, meaning ‘the military path through the valley'. The Roman settlement of Verulamium (now St Albans) lies a few miles away with a number of roads connected to it. One of them, which linked Cheshunt and Dunstable, passed through Harpenden and followed a route along the dry valley which is now used by the A1081 road. The dry valley is one of three valleys surrounding Harpenden, the other two being the valleys of the River Ver and River Lea respectively.
For centuries, Harpenden was a small agricultural village. Around the 18th and 19th century a new industry emerged - the straw plait industry. Due to the abundance of wheat in the area, straw hat making became the main industry in Harpenden. The industry itself was centred around the nearby towns of Luton and Dunstable, with nearby villages selling their plait to the hat manufacturers.
In 1860 the railway arrived in Harpenden. A second station opened in 1868 by the Midland Railway. The original station was later closed in the 1960s due to the Beeching cuts, whilst the second is in use to this day on the Midland Main Line. Why is this petition being debated?
The Petitions Committee has the power to schedule debates on e-petitions in the House of Commons Second Chamber, Westminster Hall.
In deciding which petitions should be debated, it takes into account how many people have signed the petition, the topicality of the issue raised, whether the issue has recently been debated in Parliament, and the breadth of interest among MPs.
What will the petition debate achieve?
Debates on petitions in Westminster Hall are general debates about the issues raised by the petition.
MPs can discuss the petition and, if they wish, ask questions about the Government’s position on the issue or press the Government to take action.
A Government Minister takes part in the debate and answers the points raised.
These debates help to raise the profile of a campaign and could influence decision-making in Government and Parliament.
Petition debates in Westminster Hall cannot directly change the law or result in a vote to implement the request of the petition.
Creating new laws, or changing existing ones, can only be done through the parliamentary legislative process which involves a number of debates, and detailed consideration of the law in draft, in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
This process is normally started by the Government, although there are some ways in which individual MPs or members of the House of Lords who are not in the Government (known as "backbenchers") can ask Parliament to consider new laws.

Detectives investigating an assault at a petrol station in Harpenden are appealing for witnesses and information.
At around 7.10pm on Thursday, December 18, a grey Peugeot believed to be either a 406 or 407 estate was driven onto the forecourt of the Tesco Express service station in Lower Luton Road.
Staff in store were made aware that the vehicle had tape obscuring its number plates. A staff member, a man in his mid-20s, went out to speak to the driver but the car then collided with him. It drove away from the scene.
The car is believed to have contained up to four people; the occupants were described as men with dark complexions aged between their late 20s and early 40s.
Detective Constable Robert Muir is investigating and said: “The member of staff was very lucky to not have been more seriously injured in this incident and to only escape with grazes and bruises.
“We have made the decision to release the footage of the incident to show how serious it was and in the hope that someone is able to identify the people involved. If you believe you know who the car belongs to or who was driving it at the time of the incident please contact me as soon as possible.”
Anyone with any information in relation to this incident is asked to contact DC Muir via Hertfordshire Constabulary’s non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference F2/14/1744. Alternatively people can call Crimestoppers, the independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and around 25 miles north, and slightly west, of central London, is the town of Harpenden.
In 1060 King Edward the Confessor granted the area of Harpenden, and the neighbouring village of Wheathampstead, to Westminster Abbey. It was gradually cleared of woodland for farming and settlement. The earliest mention of a church in Harpenden dates from 1221, in reference to St Nicholas Church (seen at the end of the walk - see the timestamps for reference).
The name 'Harpenden' is derived from 'herpe dene’, meaning ‘the military path through the valley'. The Roman settlement of Verulamium (now St Albans) lies a few miles away with a number of roads connected to it. One of them, which linked Cheshunt and Dunstable, passed through Harpenden and followed a route along the dry valley which is now used by the A1081 road. The dry valley is one of three valleys surrounding Harpenden, the other two being the valleys of the River Ver and River Lea respectively.
For centuries, Harpenden was a small agricultural village. Around the 18th and 19th century a new industry emerged - the straw plait industry. Due to the abundance of wheat in the area, straw hat making became the main industry in Harpenden. The industry itself was centred around the nearby towns of Luton and Dunstable, with nearby villages selling their plait to the hat manufacturers.
In 1860 the railway arrived in Harpenden. A second station opened in 1868 by the Midland Railway. The original station was later closed in the 1960s due to the Beeching cuts, whilst the second is in use to this day on the Midland Main Line. This provides direct access to London St Pancras station in well under an hour, making Harpenden a popular commuter town for those working in the capital.
From the late Victorian era to the present day, Harpenden has grown tenfold from a village of around 3,000 people, to a moderately-sized town of around 30,000. This population expansion has occurred with minimal blighting from modern architecture. Many of its older buildings have survived.

Harpenden is a town in the City of St Albans district in the county of Hertfordshire, England. The town's population is just under 30,000. Harpenden is a commuter town, with a direct rail connection into London and property prices well over double the national average. Geographically it is located between (and a short distance from) two much larger neighbours: Luton town (to the north) and the city of St Albans (to the south). It is flanked by the villages of Redbourn (to the west) and Wheathampstead (to the east).
History
There is evidence of pre-Roman Belgic farmers in the area. In 1867 several items were found including a bronze escutcheon, rams-head shaped mounts, and a bronze bowl.
There are Roman remains in land around Harpenden, for instance the site of a mausoleum in the park at Rothamsted. A tumulus near the river Lea was opened in the 1820s and it contained a stone sarcophagus of Romano-Celtic origin. Five objects dating from around 150 AD, were inside including a glass jug with a Mediterranean stamp and samian ware dishes used for libations.

"Why our political system has become infantilised, how we might grow up, and how Universities can help."
Jonathan Hill is a British Conservative politician and former European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union. Nominated by the former British Prime Minister David Cameron, Jonathan took office as European Commissioner in November 2014 with responsibility for financial regulation across the whole of Europe. His flagship programme was the development of a European Capital Markets Union to increase the flow of investment capital throughout the EU. Jonathan resigned as Commissioner in the immediate aftermath of the UK referendum on EU membership in June 2016.
Before becoming European Commissioner, Jonathan was a member of the British Cabinet as Leader of the House of Lords and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 2013 to 2014. Before that, he served as minister for Schools from 2010 to 2013, where he was responsible for implementing the Academies and Free Schools reforms.

Why is this petition being debated?
The Petitions Committee has the power to schedule debates on e-petitions in the House of Commons Second Chamber, Westminster Hall.
In deciding which petitions should be debated, it takes into account how many people have signed the petition, the topicality of the issue raised, whether the issue has recently been debated in Parliament, and the breadth of interest among MPs.
What will the petition debate achieve?
Debates on petitions in Westminster Hall are general debates about the issues raised by the petition.
MPs can discuss the petition and, if they wish, ask questions about the Government’s position on the issue or press the Government to take action.
A Government Minister takes part in the debate and answers the points raised.
These debates help to raise the profile of a campaign and could influence decision-making in Government and Parliament.
Petition debates in Westminster Hall cannot directly change the law or result in a vote to implement the request of the petition.
Creating new laws, or changing existing ones, can only be done through the parliamentary legislative process which involves a number of debates, and detailed consideration of the law in draft, in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
This process is normally started by the Government, although there are some ways in which individual MPs or members of the House of Lords who are not in the Government (known as "backbenchers") can ask Parliament to consider new laws.
