A hard disk drive failure occurs when a hard disk drive malfunctions and the stored information cannot be accessed with a properly configured computer. A disk failure may occur in the course of normal operation, or due to an external factor such as exposure to fire or water or high magnetic fields, or suffering a sharp impact or environmental contamination, which can lead to a head crash.
Causes
Some hard drives simply fail because of worn out parts, others fail prematurely. HDD manufacturers typically specify a mean time between failures (MTBF) or an annualized failure rate (AFR) which are population statistics that can not predict the behavior of an individual unit. These are calculated by constantly running samples of the drive for a short amount of time, analyzing the resultant wear and tear upon the physical components of the drive, and extrapolating to provide a reasonable estimate of its lifespan. Hard disk drive failures tend to follow the concept of the bathtub curve. HDDs typically fail within a short time if there is a defect present from manufacturing. If an HDD proves reliable for a period of a few months after installation, the HDD has a significantly greater chance of remaining reliable. Therefore, even if a HDD is subjected to several years of heavy daily use, it may not show any notable signs of wear unless closely inspected. On the other hand, an HDD can fail at any time in many different situations.
A hard disk drive (HDD), hard disk, hard drive or fixed disk is a data storage device used for storing and retrieving digital information using one or more rigid ("hard") rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with magnetic material. The platters are paired with magnetic heads arranged on a moving actuator arm, which read and write data to the platter surfaces. Data is accessed in a random-access manner, meaning that individual blocks of data can be stored or retrieved in any order and not only sequentially. HDDs are a type of non-volatile memory, retaining stored data even when powered off.
Introduced by IBM in 1956, HDDs became the dominant secondary storage device for general-purpose computers by the early 1960s. Continuously improved, HDDs have maintained this position into the modern era of servers and personal computers. More than 200 companies have produced HDD units, though most current units are manufactured by Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital. As of 2015, HDD production (exabytes per year) and areal density are growing, although unit shipments are declining.
The Macintosh Hard Disk 20 was the first hard drive developed by Apple Computer specifically for use with the Macintosh 512K. Introduced on September 17, 1985, it was part of Apple's long awaited solution toward completing the Macintosh Office (a suite of integrated business hardware & software) announced in January 1985. It would be over a year more before Apple would release the file server software AppleShare that would link all of the hardware together. By that time the SCSI interface introduced on the Macintosh Plus in January 1986, would accommodate far faster and more efficient hard drives, rendering the Hard Disk 20 virtually obsolete.

The modern hard drive is an object that can likely hold more information than your local library. But how does it store so much information in such a small space? Kanawat Senanan details the generations of engineers, material scientists, and quantum physicists who influenced the creation of this incredibly powerful and precise tool.

-------------LYRICS--------------
I hurt myself with the knife of your love,
Thinking of you in endless pain.
Tears of blood I cried and drowning in,
Passion tearing down my skin.
I’d love to see your milky flesh,
Burning by the light of day.
And your eyes turning red,
Waiting for my heartblood spilt away.
You ‘re dying by my love,
And you ‘re crying for your soul.
That will never see the Pearly Gates,
But I cannot bring you back.
I’d love to see your milky flesh,
Burning by the light of day.
And your eyes turning red,...
