Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (Norwegian:[ˈɾuːɑl ˈɑmʉnsən]; 16 July 1872– c. 18 June 1928) was a Norwegianexplorer of polar regions. He led the Antarcticexpedition of 1910–12 which was the first to reach the South Pole, on 14 December 1911. In 1926, he was the first expedition leader for the air expedition to the North Pole.
Amundsen is recognized as the first person, without dispute, as having reached both poles. He is also known as having the first expedition to traverse the Northwest Passage (1903–06) in the Arctic.
Amundsen was born to a family of Norwegian shipowners and captains in Borge, between the towns Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg. His parents were Jens Amundsen and Hanna Sahlqvist. Roald was the fourth son in the family. His mother wanted him to avoid the family maritime trade and encouraged him to become a doctor, a promise that Amundsen kept until his mother died when he was aged 21. He promptly quit university for a life at sea.
Roald Amundsen (often abbreviated Roald; named in honor of Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen), originally named Vilm, is a German steel-ship built at the Elbe River in 1952. Having worked in different areas, she was refitted in 1992 to 1993 as a brig (two-masted square-rigged sailing ship) and now serves as a sail training ship. During summer, she usually operates in the Baltic Sea, and usually embarks for journeys to farther destinations for winter, including several trans-Atlantic crossings.
Ship history
The hull of the ship was built at the shipyard Roßlauer Werft at the Elbe River in Roßlau, German Democratic Republic, in 1952. Originally intended for fishing as a deep sea fishing lugger, plans were changed before the completion of the ship, and she was then instead built as a type of tanker, receiving her final completion at the shipyard Peene-Werft in Wolgast, Germany, at the shore of the Baltic Sea.
Named Vilm, the ship was put to use for the National People's Army (NVA), first as a tanker and supply vessel, operating out of Peenemünde and crewed mainly by civilian seamen. Converted to a transporter for bilge water in the 70s on the Peene-Werft, the Vilm then made regular trips to the bases of the National People's Army to take the ships' bilge water to a centralized treatment facility. This service was discontinued at the end of 1988.
Roald Amundsen (18 September 1913 – 29 March 1985) was a Norwegianfootballdefender who was a member of the Norway team at the 1938 FIFA World Cup. Amundsen was a reserve member of the squad, and never actually played any full internationals for Norway. He was, however, capped twice as a "B" international.
At club level, Amundsen played for Mjøndalen, and was a member if the MIF side that won the Norwegian Cup in 1937.
The Fridtjof Nansen-classfrigates are the main surface combatant units of the Royal Norwegian Navy. The ships are named after famous Norwegian explorers, with the lead ship of the class bearing the name of Fridtjof Nansen, the Norwegian scientist, explorer and humanitarian. Five ships were ordered from Spanish shipbuilder Bazan (now Navantia). As of 2011, all five are in active service. The total projected cost for all five ships is NOK21 billion (about USD 3.33billion).
Roald is a village in Giske Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The village is located on the northern part of the island Vigra. Roald is about 20 kilometres (12mi) north of the city centre of Ålesund, connected via two undersea tunnels which opened in 1987 (and will be going through extensive upgrades starting in 2008). Ålesund Airport, Vigra is 2 kilometres (1.2mi) south of the village of Roald. Vigra Church is located a short distance south of Roald.
The 0.68-square-kilometre (170-acre) village of Roald has a population (2013) of 808, giving the village a population density of 1,188 inhabitants per square kilometre (3,080/sqmi).
In all of the Animal Crossing games, the player assumes the role of a human character, who moves into a ruralvillage populated with anthropomorphic animals and lives there indefinitely. Gameplay is open-ended: players have no defined objectives, but are instead encouraged to spend their time in the village performing any number of activities, which include collecting items, planting plants or other items, and socializing with the village's residents. All Animal Crossing games are played in real time, utilizing the system's internal clock and calendar. Thus, passage of time in the game world reflects that in reality, as well as the current season and time of day. Some in-game events, such as holidays or the growth of a tree, occur at certain times or require some duration of time to have passed.
Little is known about Roald, apart from that he had a farm in Dalur, and that he probably originated from Shetland.
In G.V.C. Young's textbook, Færøerne – fra vikingetiden til reformationen, Roald is not named. However, in the Lagting's official list of First Ministers, he is included.

14th December 1911: Roald Amundsen reaches the South Pole
They arrived five weeks ahead of British explorer Robert Falcon Scott, and successfully made it back to their basecamp whereas Scott did not.
Amundsen originally planned to become the first to reach the North Pole, but changed his target to the South Pole after he learned of the now-disputed claim by rival American explorers that they had already reached it. Keeping his new plan secret, even from his crew, his ship departed Norway on the 9th August. He only told them of their destination a month later, shortly before they left their final port on the island of Madeira.

Amundsen’s ship arrived in an Antarctic inland known as the Bay of Whales on the 14th January 1911, where the crew established a base known as Framheim. They then spent the next three months preparing depots across the Ross Ice Shelf, prior to the onset of Antarctic winter.
As soon as the sun returned at the end of August, Amundsen attempted to reach the pole but was forced to turn back due to the harsh conditions. A second attempt that began in mid-October was much more successful, seeing them arrive at the pole almost 2 months later.
As well as being the first expedition leader to reach the South Pole, Amundsen is also the first person to be universally recognised as reaching the North Pole as a result of his 1926 air expedition, making him the first person also to reach both poles.

This comfortable expedition vessel not only has fuel cells to power the engines, but many other innovations designed to enhance its sustainability. There is also a 7-deck high LED image screen in the main atrium, as well as full science center for those that wish to immerse themselves in geology, geography, and biology of the remote places being visited. Join Bob as he tours the MS Roald Amundsen.

To make it easier for everybody, I filmed all decks on the Roald Amundsen, where passengers can freely wonder around.

The sistership Fridtjof Nansen is a similar ship and you can use this video as well to see how it looks like from the inside.
I hope this video is helpfull for upcoming expeditioners to Antarctica, or maybe Greenland and Alaska and there will be more important video's coming up to make your best choice on your expedition with Hurtigruten.
To make the video easier to walk through, I made a time stamp here below, so you can choose from which deck you want to start watching from.

Warming temperatures are melting the Arctic sea ice, making hitherto inaccessible stretches of the Arctic Ocean fully navigable. This September, satellite images showed the Northwest Passage to be ice free for the first time since records began, allowing shipping to travel comparatively unhindered from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. ...

You know the little random article button on the corner of all Wikipedia articles? Well I'm gonna mash it repeatedly,
and the first three historical articles I happen to come across will be subject to intense historical research that I'll present to you in the video!
The articles' subjects were way more interesting than I thought they'd be, so let's explore them together!

Breaking the Ice 1 of 3 - Northwest Passage - BBC Environmental Documentary
For centuries solid ice defeated attempts by global traders to find a way through the Northwest Passage. Now global warming has done just that.
Amid the arguments to and fro about the true extent of global warming, and the degree to which responsible people ought to be alarmed, I find one recent piece of news of the consequences of climate change particularly arresting.
The search in the 16th Century for a corridor between the frozen northern wastes was driven by intense international competition
Hear Radio 4's A Point of View
For more than 500 years, since Columbus first encountered the continent of America, European mariners have dreamed of finding and navigating a Northwest Passage - a direct shipping route from Europe to Asia across the Arctic Ocean. It ought surely to be possible, they argued, to sail from European ports northwards along the coast of Greenland, then westwards along an Arctic parallel, round Baffin Island off the northern coast of Canada, entering the Pacific between Alaska and Russia?
The search in the 16th Century for a corridor between the frozen northern wastes and the treacherous ice floes was driven by intense international competition and commercial pressures. Indeed, without the promise of financial gain riding on the outcome of these costly expeditions, there would have been no financial backers.
The existing sea route eastwards round the Cape of Good Hope, to India, China and the Spice Islands with their rich resources of pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg, was long and dangerous. If a way could be found from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific which stayed close to the North Pole, the new class of entrepreneurial merchants would be able to undercut their rivals by having their sea captains bring their exotic cargoes home faster and more economically.
Icy wasteland
In 1566, in his Discourse of a Discoverie for a new Passage to Cataia, or China, the English mariner Sir Humphrey Gilbert urged Queen Elizabeth I to support the search for the Northwest Passage in terms which still resonate today: "It were the only way for our princes to possess the wealth of all the east parts of the world, which is infinite.

(English below)
"Glimrende bilder fra arktiske landskaper og dyreliv, tatt opp av fotograf Paul Berge. Starten til Nordpolen. 600 meter utmerkede filmbilder tatt opp av Oskar Omdal fra 87 grader 44 minutter. Hjemkomsten til Spitsbergen. Den første fullstendige billedserie fra den festlige mottagelsen på fjorden og i Oslo." (Fra avisannonse)
The Norwegian version of Roald Amundsen and Lincoln Ellsworth's flying expedition to the North Pole in 1925."Fantastic footage of arctic landscapes and wildlife, captured by photographer Paul Berge. Preparing for the flight to the North Pole. Excellent supplementary material recorded by Oskar Omdal 1000 km inside the frozen wastes. The Spitsbergen Homecoming. The first complete documentation of the festive reception on the Oslo fjord and in the city itself." (From an ad for the movie, reproduced in the book "Filmen i Norge")
How one Norwegian man beat the entire world!!

Roald Amundsen, the explorer, had a vision at the age of 10 that he wanted to create an electric ship to visit the polar regions. Almost 100 years after his death, that vision is being realized.
Roald Amundsen, the ship, is NOT just a big ice-breaker.
Hurtigruten Expeditions offers more itinerary options to Antarctica, the Galápagos Islands, Greenland, Svalbard, and the West African coast than any other expedition cruise company while also offering Alaska, Iceland, Canada’s Northwest Passage, the British Isles, and many other exciting destinations. The most sustainable fleet in the industry, our vessels include MS Roald Amundsen, the world’s first-ever battery-hybrid-powered ship, and its sister ship, MS Fridtjof Nansen.

This is a full walking tour on the MS Roald Amundsen hybrid expedition ship from the Hurtigruten Expeditions (HX) fleet. @HXHurtigrutenExpeditions @hurtigruten
It's always a hard task to choose which company to choose from and which ship to take. There are always so many unanswered questions that you really need to have it answered to make the best choice.
To make it easier for everybody, I filmed all decks on the Roald Amundsen, where passengers can freely wonder around.
This video also helps people to choose their rooms. From this video you can clearly see where your room is situated.
I also filmed the Expedition Launch, medical center, reception, shop, research center, briefing area's, recreation area's, viewing decks, sauna, fitness, spa en welness, expedition lounge with the bars, jacuzzi's, swimming pool and the three restaurants, Fredheim, Aune and Lindstrom.
TIMESTAMPS
00:00 - 02:23 - DECK 3: Medical Center & Expedition Launch
02:24 - 07:52 - DECK 4: State rooms

Inside the MS Roald Amundsen and also the sister ship MS Fridtjof Nansen, there is a shop where you can buy things that you probably need during your expedition if you forgot to bring those items with you. The items are not cheap, but they do the trick.

Here we see the brand-new hybrid powered Hurtigruten cruise ship ROALD AMUNDSEN on the Elbe on her way from Hamburg, Germany to Esbjerg, Denmark. Weather was horrible for filming but at least the ship sounded its impressive ship horn. Filmed on 11 July 2019 with Samsung Galaxy S9.
