The Sinking of HMS Glorious: An Avoidable Tragedy?
The Sinking of HMS Glorious, on June 8 1940, was one of the worst British naval disasters of the Second World War. Over 1500 losing their lives as two German battleships sunk three British ships. In this video, we will recount the events and the heroism of Glorious’ two escorts, before looking at the post-war controversy over whether the disaster was ‘covered up’ by the Admiralty.

HMS Courageous 3D Scan Video - 04 May, 2023
This is a video made from the 3D Matterport scans taken whilst onboard the Cold War nuclear submarine, HMS Courageous, moored alongside in No. 3 Basin at HM Naval Base, Devonport. The video shows a "walkthrough" of the scanning results on all 3 decks. Some areas were inaccessible due to cramped spaces, but these have been captured using 360 photography and will be added later. Only the forward interior areas are shown, as it was not permitted to venture aft of the bulkhead hatch to the "tunnel" over the reactor space. This project builds on an earlier one, where a simple VR model of the submarine hull was merged with 360 images (see: https://youtu.be/LtfBkZCaI2M).

A Tale of Two Warships: The Conversion and History of HMS Glorious and HMS Courageous
In 1921, the Royal Navy was debating whether or not to convert two large light cruisers, HMS Glorious and HMS Courageous, from the Admiral Fisher's building project in 1914 into aircraft carriers. At the time, the carriers in service were limited in their capabilities, and the Royal Navy had a decision to make as to whether they should convert the two cruisers into carriers or not. The conversion was deemed necessary given the need for fast carriers, and the fact that the United States Navy was converting the battlecruisers Saratoga and Lexington into aircraft carriers. The conversion of Glorious and Courageous was deemed less expensive than building new carriers. The cost of conversion was about half as expensive as building a new carrier. By October of 1923, the controller gave verbal in...

Following World War 1 and due to the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922, limiting new ship constructions, HMS Courageous along with her sisters HMS Glorious and HMS Furious were converted into aircraft carriers and became the Courageous Class of Aircraft Carriers for the Royal Navy.
Disaster would strike HMS Courageous however in the early days of World War 2.

By October of 1923, the controller gave verbal instructions to go ahead with the complete reconstruction of Glorious and Courageous, with outline sketches showing the cutting away of the main structure and armor required following the same general idea for reconstruction as Furious. The alterations to structure and fittings included the removal of structures above the forecastle deck, all bulkheads, shelter deck, conning tower, director towers, masts' main derrick, bridges, funnels, uptakes, and boiler room vents down to the main deck, all guns, and all boats. On the forecastle deck, alterations included the removal of coal winches, communication pipes, and wires and the addition of plating over boiler room vents. Armor was removed, and all holes on the various decks were filled in with plating. We will also briefly discuss their careers in this video.
