Gustavus Adolphus: 'The Father Of Modern Warfare'
The military reforms of Gustavus Adolphus’ changed the face of European Warfare. His legacy truly was long lasting both in practical and historiographical terms. The historian Geoffrey Parker once noted that: “If Gustavus Adolphus rose up from the dead … and was magically transported to the western front in 1914, he would have understood the underlying concepts governing warfare with little difficulty.” Gustavus Adolphus is often dubbed the ‘Father of Modern Warfare’ – a title often linked to his famous success during the ‘Swedish intervention in the Thirty Years War’. But there is more to this story. How Gustavus Adolphus Combated the Winged Hussars
Between 1600 and 1629, the Swedes faced one of the most successful cavalry forces of the early modern Period: The Polish Winged Hussars. During the Polish-Swedish Wars the Swedes suffered many humiliating defeats on their behalf — until, in 1621, things changed: Gustavus Adolphus entered the stage. He found innovative ways to combat the Polish horsemen and learned a great deal from them. This is how contemporary historiography explains how Gustavus Adolphus dealt with the Polish Winged Hussars.

The Lion From The North – Gustavus Adolphus – Sabaton History 090 [Official]
It was a time of religion and war. Legends tell the tale of a mighty Swedish King, a Lion from the North, who arrived in the German Empire with a mighty host to save Protestantism. Beyond the legends, Gustavus Adolphus was a warrior king who sought to create a Swedish empire through hegemony on the Baltic Sea. Once, Sweden's involvement in the 30 Years War had begun out of sheer necessity, but soon send her armies on a path of glory and fame. But would this path lead the Swedish King to victory or his inevitable demise?

Gustavus Adolphus' Masterpiece: The Battle of Breitenfeld 1631 Hour by Hour | Thirty Years War
The battle of Breitenfeld (1631) is deemed a major watershed for early modern warfare. Scholars and armchair historians alike have argued that it pitched two entirely different tactical systems against each other. In this view Breitenfeld heralded a new era of warfare. Some, however, think that the tactical components of the battle are overrated. This video presents an in-depth hour by hour analysis of the combat action. It is going to explain the movements of individual tactical units and their respective engagements. This is how contemporary historiography recounts the battle of Breitenfeld.

Gustavus Adolphus: Sweden's Lion From the North
https://www.patreon.com/history_uncovered
Gustavus Adolphus or (Gustav II Adolf) was king of Sweden from 1611 until 1632. He is remembered by many as the father of modern warfare due to his innovative strategies on the battlefield. During his reign as king and shortly after his death, Sweden grew from a small, regional power into one of the great powers of Europe.
His greatest victory was at the Battle of Breitenfeld in 1631 during the Thirty Years War. There, he utilized all of his innovations into an overwhelming victory that cemented his legacy as a military pioneer and also elevated the status of the Swedish Empire for many years to come.

The military reforms of Gustavus Adolphus’ changed the face of European Warfare. His legacy truly was long lasting both in practical and historiographical terms. But there is more to this story. In a time when musketeers and pikemen were becoming the most important part of the armies of western Europe and cavalry relied heavily on arquebuses and pistols instead of swords and lances, Gustavus faced an entirely different way of warfare in the east: the Polish Winged Hussars. Many of Gustavus’ later successes were due to lessons he learned in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth – and they were learned the hard way. But let there be a word of caution: It is both very easy to overstate and understate Gustavus’ military achievements. Much of the scholarly literature on this topic is contradictory and the opinions of scholars on such an influential figure inevitably vary. As always, all works cited are listed in the description below or will appear on screen. This video dissects how varying historiographical traditions discuss Gustavus Adolphus’ military reforms.

========= The Lion From The North LYRICS ==========
A time of religion and war,
Legends tell the tale of a lion
This beast in the shape of a man,
With a dream to rule sea and land
And all those who stand in his way,
Will die, by God and victorious arms
With the righteous that follows him south,
Once more, set ashore, to war
Legends have taught, battles fought,
This lion has no fear at heart
Lion come forth, come from the north,
Come from the no-o-o-o-orth
Gustavus! Adolphus!
(Gustavus Adolphus go forth, libera, impera)
Libera et impera!
Acerbus et ingens!
(Acerbus et ingens leo, libera, impera)
Augusta per augusta
A storm over Europe unleashed,
Dawn of war, a trail of destruction
The power of Rome won’t prevail,
See the Catholics shiver and shake
The future of warfare unveiled,
Showed the way, that we still walk today
Der Löwe aus Mitternacht comes,
Once more, he is here, for war
Stories of old, truth unfold,
Control over Europe he holds
Freedom he’ll bring,
Lion and king, lion and king
Mighty eagle rule alone
Liberator claim the throne
Lion from the northern land
Take the scepter from its hand
Oh, oh, oh you lion from the north,
Ooooooooh you lion from the north

========= The Lion From The North LYRICS ==========
A time of religion and war,
Legends tell the tale of a lion
This beast in the shape of a man,
With a dream to rule sea and land
And all those who stand in his way,
Will die, by God and victorious arms
With the righteous that follows him south,
Once more, set ashore, to war
Legends have taught, battles fought,
This lion has no fear at heart
Lion come forth, come from the north,
Come from the no-o-o-o-orth
Gustavus! Adolphus!
(Gustavus Adolphus go forth, libera, impera)
Libera et impera!
Acerbus et ingens!
(Acerbus et ingens leo, libera, impera)
Augusta per augusta
A storm over Europe unleashed,
Dawn of war, a trail of destruction
The power of Rome won’t prevail,
See the Catholics shiver and shake
The future of warfare unveiled,
Showed the way, that we still walk today
Der Löwe aus Mitternacht comes,
Once more, he is here, for war
Stories of old, truth unfold,
Control over Europe he holds
Freedom he’ll bring,
Lion and king, lion and king
Mighty eagle rule alone
Liberator claim the throne
Lion from the northern land
Take the scepter from its hand
Oh, oh, oh you lion from the north,
Ooooooooh you lion from the north

It was a time of religion and war. Legends tell the tale of a mighty Swedish King, a Lion from the North, who arrived in the German Empire with a mighty host to save Protestantism. Beyond the legends, Gustavus Adolphus was a warrior king who sought to create a Swedish empire through hegemony on the Baltic Sea. Once, Sweden's involvement in the 30 Years War had begun out of sheer necessity, but soon send her armies on a path of glory and fame. But would this path lead the Swedish King to victory or his inevitable demise?

The battle of Breitenfeld (1631) is deemed a major watershed for early modern warfare. Scholars and armchair historians alike have argued that it pitched two entirely different tactical systems against each other. In this view Breitenfeld heralded a new era of warfare. Some, however, think that the tactical components of the battle are overrated. This video presents an in-depth hour by hour analysis of the combat action. It is going to explain the movements of individual tactical units and their respective engagements. This is how contemporary historiography recounts the battle of Breitenfeld.

Gustavus Adolphus or (Gustav II Adolf) was king of Sweden from 1611 until 1632. He is remembered by many as the father of modern warfare due to his innovative strategies on the battlefield.
