Guinea Worm Disease Eradication: Countdown to Zero (Carter Center)
When The Carter Center began leading the campaign to eradicate Guinea worm in 1986, there were an estimated 3.5 million cases of the disease in 21 countries in Africa and Asia. Today, less than a fraction of one percent of Guinea worm cases remain in a handful of endemic countries: South Sudan, Chad, Mali, and Ethiopia.
Guinea worm disease is contracted when a person drinks stagnant water that is contaminated with microscopic water fleas carrying infective larvae. Inside a person's body, the larvae grow for a year, becoming thin thread-like worms, up to 3-feet-long. These worms create agonizingly painful blisters in the skin, through which they slowly exit the body. People with emerging worms must not bathe or step in sources of drinking water, because a worm will release hundreds of tho...

D. medinensis larvae are found in fresh water, where they are ingested by copepods of the genus Cyclops. Within the copepod, the D. medinensis larvae develop to an infective stage within 14 days. When the infected copepod is ingested by a mammalian host, the copepod is dissolved by stomach acid and the D. medinensis larvae migrate through the wall of the mammalian intestine, and mature into adults. About 100 days after infection, a male and female D. medinensis meet and sexually reproduce within the host tissue. The male dies in the host tissue, while the female migrates to the host's subcutaneous tissue. Around a year after infec...

These worms create agonizingly painful blisters in the skin, through which they slowly exit the body. People with emerging worms must not bathe or step in sources of drinking water, because a worm will release hundreds of thousands of eggs, or larvae, into the water. Water fleas then eat the larvae, and people who drink unfiltered water from the pond become infected -- continuing the life cycle of the parasite.

The male dies in the host tissue, while the female migrates to the host's subcutaneous tissue. Around a year after infection, the female causes the formation of a blister on the skin's surface, generally on the lower extremities, though occasionally on the hand or scrotum. When the blister ruptures, the female slowly emerges over the course of several days or weeks. This causes extreme pain and irritation to the host. When the host submerges the affected body part in water, the female expels thousands of larvae into the water. From here, the larvae infect copepods, continuing the lifecycle.

Guinea Conakry: Life on the Edge | Deadliest Journeys
In Guinea Conakry, at the wheel of their truck, Mamady and her sons face torrential downpours which make the track nightmarish. The abundant rains and the 1,300 streams and rivers that run through the country gave it its nickname: the water tower. However, running water is rare in the country and, to have access to it, it is sometimes necessary to install giant cisterns. Transporting these tanks by bush taxi over the rutted tracks is no easy task. After the palm oil harvest, which provides a minimum of income for residents, only motorcycles can transport the precious liquid. Loaded with dozens of cans, they set off on chaotic tracks on which anything can happen.

The Gangs of Papua New Guinea
Police violently battling murderous gangs. Endemic violence, extreme poverty, obscene wealth and corruption on all levels. Welcome to Port-Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
Last summer, a settling of scores between tribal clans left 32 dead. But that is nothing compared to what’s going on in the city. Here the police wage a merciless war against the Raskols gangs. In 2020, Port Moresby was ranked the 2nd most violent capital city in the world, just behind Caracas, Venezuela.
Women in particular pay a high price for this violence. 80% of men admit to beating their wives regularly. One in two women will be raped during their lifetime. There are only a few shelters they can turn to and their attackers are rarely prosecuted.
Corruption is also rife and for those with the right connections, PNG is ...

Corruption is also rife and for those with the right connections, PNG is an El Dorado. Thanks to its rich mineral deposits, the capital has experienced an unrivalled real estate boom in the past 10 years.
Director: ALEXANDRE SPALAIKOVITCH AND GUILLAUME LHOTELLIER
An In-depth Exploration of Papua New Guinea: Unveiling the Vanishing Traditions, Socioeconomic Disparity, Criminal Underworld, Tribal Violence, and Corruption Plaguing the Nation

6:34 🚓 Police in Papua New Guinea arrest an innocent suspect and fail to apprehend the real robbers.

German Guinea disbanded the Guinea name to become Cameroon and Togo. These remaining pockets of land went on to become the modern nations of Guinea, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau respectively but they all gained their independence at different times.

The Story Behind Three African Countries Called Guinea
Three countries in Africa have 'Guinea' in their names leaving many people confused. These are: Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and the Republic of Guinea.
Although the countries have similar names, each has its unique stories. The general theory suggests that the name Guinea was derived from Portuguese in the mid-15th century.
Initially, it served as a generic term referring to the people and areas of West Africa, particularly those along the southern border of the Senegal River – where the now three countries are located.
The names of the countries—Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau—unfolded during the 20th century.
Spain, France, and Portugal collectively held sway over the Guinea region during colonialism before the African countries struggled and succeeded in gaining in...

Why are so many countries called Guinea
Why are so many countries called Guinea? Have you ever wondered why so many countries in Africa are named Guinea? The name appears repeatedly on the African continent, from Guinea-Bissau and Guinea-Conakry in the west to Equatorial Guinea in the center, whiles Papua New Guinea can be found nestled in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, just north of Australia. It's a curious coincidence that these countries share a name, and it begs the question: what is the origin of this name, and what does it signify?
The answer to this question lies in these countries' fascinating history and complex relationship with European powers.

Many European nations wanted and ended up controlling a piece of their own Guinea, unsurprisingly calling them French Guinea, Spanish Guinea, Portuguese Guinea and German Guinea. Additionally, there was Swedish Guinea which later became Danish Guinea and soon after that Dutch Guinea but was swallowed up by the British who took over and called it the Gold Coast. German Guinea disbanded the Guinea name to become Cameroon and Togo. These remaining pockets of land went on to become the modern nations of Guinea, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau respectively but they all gained their independence at different times.
While all three of these nations are now independent the official languages are still French, Spanish and Portuguese respectively. Papua New Guinea is a bit of a wildcard. While the other “Guinea” countries are in Africa, Papua New Guinea is not.

Initially, it served as a generic term referring to the people and areas of West Africa, particularly those along the southern border of the Senegal River – where the now three countries are located.

Spain, France, and Portugal collectively held sway over the Guinea region during colonialism before the African countries struggled and succeeded in gaining independence.
Apart from the three Guineas in Africa, there is also another country, Papua New Guinea, which is in Oceania, not in Africa. Its story is also partly linked to the similarities of its people with the people of Africa
Let’s look at the story of each of the three ‘Guineas’ in Africa.

Equatorial Guinea is a small country located on the west coast of Africa. It is made up of two main regions: Bioko Island, which is where the capital city of Malabo is located, and Río Muni, which is on the mainland. Equatorial Guinea is a country of contrasts, with a rich history and diverse cultures. It is also a country with a rapidly growing economy, thanks to its oil and gas reserves. In this article, we will explore the history, geography, people, facts, and economy of Equatorial Guinea. We will also take a look at the country's future prospects. I hope you will find this article interesting and informative!
About Equatorial Guinea
Equatorial Guinea is a small country located on the west coast of Africa. It is made up of two main regions: Bioko Island, which is where the capital city of Malabo is located, and Río Muni, which is on the mainland. Equatorial Guinea is a country of contrasts, with a rich history and diverse cultures. It is also a country with a rapidly growing economy, thanks to its oil and gas reserves.
Equatorial Guinea is not a major player on the world stage, but it is important for a few reasons. First, it is located in a strategic position on the Gulf of Guinea, which is a major shipping route. Second, it has a large oil and gas industry, which is important for the global economy. Third, it is a member of the African Union and the United Nations, which gives it a voice on the international stage.
Equatorial Guinea's reputation around the world is mixed. On the one hand, the country is often praised for its economic growth and its potential as a future oil and gas producer. On the other hand, Equatorial Guinea has been criticized for its human rights record and its high level of corruption.
Overall, Equatorial Guinea is a country with a lot of potential. However, it also faces some challenges, such as corruption and poverty. The country's future reputation will depend on how it addresses these challenges.
The History of Equatorial Guinea
Equatorial Guinea has a long and complex history, dating back to the 15th century. The first Europeans to arrive in the region were the Portuguese, who established a trading post on Bioko Island in 1472. The island was then known as Fernando Poo.
In the 17th century, the Spanish took control of Bioko Island. They also established a colony on the mainland, which was known as Río Muni. The Spanish ruled Equatorial Guinea for over 300 years.
In 1968, Equatorial Guinea gained independence from Spain. The first president of Equatorial Guinea was Francisco Macías Nguema. Macías Nguema was a brutal dictator who ruled the country for 11 years. He was overthrown in a coup d'état in 1979.
Since 1979, Equatorial Guinea has had a turbulent history. There have been several coups d'état and the country has been plagued by corruption. However, the country has also made some progress in recent years. The economy has grown significantly, thanks to the discovery of oil and gas reserves.
Equatorial Guinea is still a young country, but it has a lot of potential. The country has a young and growing population, and it is located in a strategic position on the Gulf of Guinea. If Equatorial Guinea can address its challenges, it could become a prosperous country in the future.
