I'm Much Happier Living In Greece Than In The U.S. — Here's How Much It Costs
Cara West moved from Texas to Syros, Greece with her husband and two-year-old daughter in 2024. She now works remotely and brings in over $100,000 a year through her salary as a luxury travel concierge and through brand sponsorships she receives as a travel content creator. She says that, because of Greece's lower cost of living, her husband can be a full-time caretaker for their daughter. She also says that they're now able to put aside more money to pay down their $62,000 of credit card debt.

The Voice of Greece | Trailer | 15/12/2024
Το «The Voice of Greece» επέστρεψε δυναμικά για τη 10η και πιο «εκρηκτική» σεζόν του στον ΣΚΑΪ και πλέον, βρίσκεται στη φάση των Knockouts!

Το «The Voice of Greece» επέστρεψε δυναμικά για τη 10η και πιο «εκρηκτική» σεζόν του στον ΣΚΑΪ και πλέον, βρίσκεται στη φάση των Knockouts!

2015 Greek Elections
This week we will focus on the Greek elections scheduled on January 25th.
The Greek Parliament has 300 members, elected for a four-year term by a system of 'reinforced' proportional representation in 56 constituencies, 48 of which are multi-seat and 8 single-seat. Seats are determined by constituency voting, and voters may select the candidate or candidates of their choice by marking their name on the party ballot. However, the party receiving the largest number of votes receives a 50-seat premium, which is filled by candidates of that party. The head of state – the President of the Hellenic Republic – is elected by Parliament for a five-year term.
Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on 8 December brought forward a presidential vote, creating uncertainty that revived fears of a Greek Eur...

Crisis and Change: the right of Greek citizens to vote abroad
The facilitation of the expat vote was a recurrent issue in the Greek parliamentary agenda. In 2019, the Greek Parliament voted by an overwhelming majority a long overdue law which allowed Greeks of the diaspora to vote from their place of residence. In this seminar we supported that the fact that this change took place 44 years after the right was first introduced in the Greek Constitution, was not a mere chronological coincidence, but had to do with a number of combined conjunctural factors that led to a breakthrough reform in homeland-diaspora political relations.

Greece hits the polling station to vote that could effect Europe - Daily Mail
Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras, who swept to victory overnight on a promise to renegotiate Greece's €240billion (£179bn) international bailout deal, made his first act to lay flowers at a memorial for 200 Communist resistance fighters in Athens (main photo). The act was seen as highly symbolic given Tsipras' history as a youth communist activist and the fact his policies have put him in conflict with other countries across Europe, particularly Germany. It came immediately after the 40-year-old was sworn in this afternoon, making him the youngest Greek Prime Minister for more than 150 years - and characteristically, he did so without wearing a tie (inset).

'We are not thieves': Greek MEP assistant gets ready to vote
EUobserver / Brussels (4th May 2012) - Over 4000 thousand MEP assistants work inside the European Parliament. One of them Panayota Maniou. She works for Greek MEP Nikolaos Chountis of the radical left party Syriza. Panayota talks about her hopes for the upcoming elections in her home country. Weary of the austerity measures backed by the big parties, many may vote in numbers great enough to put radical left or right parties into parliament.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on 8 December brought forward a presidential vote, creating uncertainty that revived fears of a Greek Eurozone exit. Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras announced plans for an early general election next month after parliament rejected his candidate for president, throwing the country's international bailout into doubt.
After three rounds of voting, the only candidate in the race, former European Commissioner Stavros Dimas, fell short of the 180 votes needed to become president, triggering a procedure leading to the dissolution of parliament. Samaras immediately announced that he would meet outgoing President Karolos Papoulias to propose holding parliamentary elections on Jan. 25 and called on Greek voters to ensure stability was preserved.
Opinion polls point to a victory by the radical leftist Syriza party, which wants to wipe out a big part of Greece's debt, and cancel the terms of a bailout from the European Union and International Monetary Fund that Greece still needs to pay its bills.
"With the will of our people, in a few days bailouts tied to austerity will be a thing of the past," Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras said after the vote. "The future has already begun."
Syriza has held a steady lead in opinion polls for months, although its advantage over Samaras' conservative New Democracy party has narrowed in recent weeks. Weakness among potential coalition partners of both could mean that whichever party wins in January will struggle to form a government and may not survive long.
Samaras, had been pushing for an early end to the deeply unpopular bailout program, brought forward the presidential vote earlier this month, gambling that victory would ease the growing political pressure on his ruling coalition.
A negotiating team from the "troika" of creditors from the European Commission, IMF and European Central Bank, had been due to resume talks in Athens next month to wind up the 240 billion euro bailout and agree an interim, post-bailout program.

Is Byzantium Even Greek? | Introduction to Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire)
The term “Byzantium” often creates confusion when brought up in conversations. Was it a city-state or an empire? Was it inhabited by Greeks or Romans? And how did it get its name? The term itself is the latinized version of “Byzantion” (Βυζάντιον), which can refer to two different but connected things: the ancient Greek colony on the European side of the Bosporus, and the Byzantine Empire, which is another name for the Eastern Roman Empire.

* Commonly used naming schemas in the Python community

The term “Byzantium” often creates confusion when brought up in conversations. Was it a city-state or an empire? Was it inhabited by Greeks or Romans? And how did it get its name? The term itself is the latinized version of “Byzantion” (Βυζάντιον), which can refer to two different but connected things: the ancient Greek colony on the European side of the Bosporus, and the Byzantine Empire, which is another name for the Eastern Roman Empire.

Thursday Bram
https://2018.northbaypython.org/schedule/presentation/15/
This talk covers key issues Python programmers run into when naming new projects. We'll go over the following:
* Commonly used naming schemas in the Python community
* Current and past project names (including those that many newcomers to Python struggle with)
* Techniques to avoid similar confusion in the future (covering both name selection and documentation)
We'll even talk about Monty Python and its long-term impact on the Python programming language.
A Python conference north of the Golden Gate
North Bay Python is a single-track conference with a carefully curated set of talks representing the diverse Python community and their different areas of interest.
If a topic is less to your interest, or you've met some people you really want to sit down and chat with, we'll have plenty of areas away from the main theatre to catch up and chat.
Our goal is to keep prices as low as possible. That means we won't be catering lunch. Instead, you can look forward to extra-long lunch breaks you can use to explore all of the great food options around the venue.

Abstract:
Named Entity Disambiguation (NED) is the task of mapping textual mentions to entities in a database. A key challenge in NED is generalizing to rarely seen entities, termed tail entities. Traditional NED systems use hand-tuned features to improve tail generalization, but these features make the system challenging to deploy and maintain. In 2018, a subset of the authors built and deployed a self-supervised NED system at a major technology company, which improved performance over its hand-tuned predecessor. Motivated to understand the core reasons for this improvement, we introduce Bootleg, a clean-slate, open-source, self-supervised NED system. In this talk, we'll show how to succeed on the tail by reasoning over structured data. We demonstrate that Bootleg matches or exceeds state-of-the-art performance on three NED benchmarks and that the learned representations from Bootleg demonstrate up to 8% performance lift in a production task. Finally, we observe that embeddings from self-supervised models like Bootleg are increasingly being served to downstream applications, creating an embedding ecosystem. We initiate the study of the data management challenges associated with this ecosystem.

Santorini (Greek: Σαντορίνη, pronounced [sandoˈrini]), classically Thera (English pronunciation /ˈθɪərə/), and officially Thira (Greek: Θήρα [ˈθira]), is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece's mainland. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago which bears the same name and is the remnant of a volcanic caldera. It forms the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km2 (28 sq mi) and a 2011 census population of 15,550. The municipality of Santorini includes the inhabited islands of Santorini and Therasia and the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi, and Christiana. The total land area is 90.623 km2 (34.990 sq mi). Santorini is part of the Thira regional unit.[2]
Santorini is essentially what remains after an enormous volcanic eruption that destroyed the earliest settlements on a formerly single island, and created the current geological caldera. A giant central, rectangular lagoon, which measures about 12 by 7 km (7.5 by 4.3 mi), is surrounded by 300 m (980 ft) high, steep cliffs on three sides. The main island slopes downward to the Aegean Sea. On the fourth side, the lagoon is separated from the sea by another much smaller island called Therasia; the lagoon is connected to the sea in two places, in the northwest and southwest. The depth of the caldera, at 400m, makes it impossible for any but the largest ships to anchor anywhere in the protected bay; there is also a fisherman's harbour at Vlychada, on the southwestern coast. The island's principal port is Athinias. The capital, Fira, clings to the top of the cliff looking down on the lagoon. The volcanic rocks present from the prior eruptions feature olivine and have a small presence of hornblende.[3]
It is the most active volcanic centre in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, though what remains today is chiefly a water-filled caldera. The volcanic arc is approximately 500 km (310 mi) long and 20 to 40 km (12 to 25 mi) wide. The region first became volcanically active around 3–4 million years ago, though volcanism on Thera began around 2 million years ago with the extrusion of dacitic lavas from vents around the Akrotiri.
The island is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred some 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of metres deep and may have led indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, 110 km (68 mi) to the south, through a gigantic tsunami. Another popular theory holds that the Thera eruption is the source of the legend of Atlantis
