Volcanic belt
A volcanic belt is a large volcanically active region. Other terms are used for smaller areas of activity, such as volcanic fields. Volcanic belts are found above zones of unusually high temperature (700-1400°C) where magma is created by partial melting of solid material in the Earth's crust and upper mantle. These areas usually form along tectonic plate boundaries at depths of 10–50 km. For example, volcanoes in Mexico and western North America are mostly in volcanic belts, such as the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt that extends 900 km from west to east across central-southern Mexico and the Northern Cordilleran Volcanic Province in western Canada.
The deeply deformed and eroded remnants of ancient volcanic belts are found in volcanically inactive regions such as the Canadian Shield. It contains over 150 volcanic belts (now deformed and eroded down to nearly flat plains) that range from 600 to 1200 million years old. These are zones of variably metamorphosed mafic to ultramafic volcanic sequences with associated sedimentary rocks that form what are known as greenstone belts. They are thought to have formed at ancient oceanic spreading centers and island arc terranes. The Abitibi greenstone belt in Ontario and Quebec, Canada is one of the world's largest greenstone belts.

Southern United States
The Southern United States—commonly referred to as the American South, Dixie, or simply the South—is a region of the United States of America. The South does not exactly match the geographic south, but is predominantly located in the southeastern corner; Arizona and New Mexico, which are geographically in the southern part of the country, are rarely considered part of the Southern United States, while West Virginia, which separated from Virginia in 1863, commonly is. Some scholars have proposed definitions of the South that do not coincide neatly with state boundaries. While the states of Delaware and Maryland, as well as the District of Columbia permitted slavery prior to the start of the Civil War, they remained with the Union. Since then, they became more culturally, economically, and politically aligned with the industrial Northern states, and are often identified as part of the Mid-Atlantic and/or Northeast by many residents, businesses, public institutions, and private organizations. However, the United States Census Bureau puts them in the South.

The South (short story)
The South (original Spanish title: El Sur) is a short story by Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges, first published in La Nación in 1953, and which appeared in the second edition (1956) of Ficciones, part two (Artifices).
Plot summary
Johannes Dahlmann was a minister in an Evangelical Church. Juan Dahlmann, one of his grandchildren, is a secretary in an Argentine library. Although of German descent, he is proud of his Argentine maternal ancestors. He has a number of artifacts from his forefather: an old sword, a lithograph photo, and a ranch home in southern Argentina he has never found time to visit.
In February 1939, he obtains a copy of the Arabian Nights. He takes the book home, and—eager to examine it—rushes up the stairs and gashes his forehead against a recently painted beam. The wound Dahlmann suffers forces him to lie bedridden with a very high fever. After a few days, his doctors move him to the hospital. On his way there, Dahlmann feels that perhaps the move will do him good. At the hospital, however, Dahlmann's treatment for his injury causes him great pain and discomfort, causing him to feel humiliation and self-hatred, almost as though he were in hell.

Great (1975 film)
Great is a 28-minute animated film released in 1975, telling a humorous version of the life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It was directed by Bob Godfrey, produced by Grantstern Films and distributed by British Lion.
Great won the Academy Award for Animated Short Film at the 48th Academy Awards in March 1976.Great was the first British animated film to win an Academy Award, and also won the BAFTA award for Best Animated Film in 1976.
Background
The film recounts the life and works of the 19th century British civil engineer and architect Isambard Kingdom Brunel in a way that is affectionate while often tongue-in-cheek. The narrator, voiced by Harry Fowler, explains the triumphs and setbacks of Brunel's career, comparing him to Archimedes, Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. Richard Briers provides the voice of Brunel. There are numerous songs in the film, including "Get a big top hat if you want to get ahead". Great is primarily an animated film, although it is mixed media, combining some live action sequences with the animation.

Belting (music)
Belting (or vocal belting) is a specific technique of singing by which a singer brings their chest register above its natural passaggio (break) at a loud volume; instead, an alternative production is developed, often described and felt as supported and sustained yelling. 'Belting' is sometimes described as 'high chest voice' but this is technically incorrect and potentially damaging for the voice. It is often described as a vocal register, although this is also technically incorrect; it is rather a descriptive for the use of a register. Singers can use belting to convey heightened emotional states.
Technique
"Chest register" is the lowest register of the singing voice, produced by dominant use of the thyroarytenoid muscle. The term "belt" is sometimes mistakenly described as the use of chest voice in the higher part of the voice. The chest voice is a very general term for the sound and muscular functions of the speaking voice, singing in the lower range, and the voice used to shout. Each of those functions requires a thicker closure of the vocal folds and the support of the muscles surrounding them. The term "chest voice" is therefore a misunderstanding when it describes muscular work in the chest-area of the body, or a resonance therein. Proper production of the belt voice, according to some vocal methods, involves minimizing tension in the throat and a change of typical placement of the voice sound in the mouth, bringing it forward into the hard palate, although techniques vary by pedagogical style.

Transition House Association of Nova Scotia
The Transition House Association of Nova Scotia (abbreviated THANS and TRANS) is a Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada-based organisation that runs women's shelters. Pamela Harrison is THANS's executive director, and also serves as provincial co-ordinator. Rhonda Fraser, the executive director of Chrysalis House, is a member of THANS. THANS organises an annual purple ribbon awareness campaign in memory of the École Polytechnique massacre. THANS was founded in 1989. THANS conducted interviews with 34 physically abused women who subsequently sought resolution through family law mediation. In 2000, THANS released a report based on these interviews, stating that most of the women would not recommend legal mediation to other abused women. In 2008, THANS supported Bill 81, which they hoped would become the Domestic Violence Elimination Act, but Minister of Justice Cecil Clarke chose not to call the bill for a third reading. In 2009, Darrell Dexter of the New Democratic Party identified THANS in his promise to increase government funding of halfway houses in Nova Scotia. In 2012, THANS partnered with the World YWCA, Family SOS, Silent Witness Nova Scotia, and Leave Out Violence to host the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada's Ghosts of Violence, a ballet about domestic violence, in Halifax.

Psilocybe zapotecorum is a fungus with a very peculiar ecology: mostly growing out of vertical walls & scars created by landslides at elevations of 1400-2800 meters in the wet montane forests of central Mexico. The habitat that this species occupies is almost always treacherous and incredibly steep, thus it's common name as one of 5 species of "derrumbe" (Spanish for "landslide) mushroom. It is also one of the most potent wild Psilocybin-containing mushroom species in the world, reportedly containing 2.6% psilocybin (and probably more). Psilocybe zapotecorum is a fungus with a very peculiar ecology: mostly growing out of vertical walls & scars created by landslides at elevations of 1400-2800 meters in the wet montane forests of central Mexico. (Videos in last three slides).
The habitat that this species occupies is almost always treacherous and incredibly steep, thus it's common name as one of 5 species of "derrumbe" (Spanish for "landslide) mushroom. It is also one of the most potent wild Psilocybin-containing mushroom species in the world, reportedly containing 2.6% psilocybin (and probably more). It bruises a very strong blue after being handled or touched, indicating the conversion of psilocybin to psilocin.
But the ecology here is what's mind-blowing. How does a mushroom species come to almost only grow out of vertical dirt walls at the bottom of dark canyons?
Due to the steep terrain here, which is in turn a result of the geologic setting : the Cocos tectonic plate to the South is subducting beneath the North American plate, causing a region of intense volcanism and uplift (see: Mexican Transvolcanic Belt).
This subduction zone to the South is responsible for the steep terrain, which is in turn responsible for the landslides, which coupled with the heavy and frequent rainfall (from warm moist air rising once it hits these mountains) is in turn responsible for the large amount of buried plant material in the substrate and walls of these ravines, which in turn provide an ample food source for Psilocybe zapotecorum.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy was a significant leader of the “Lost Cause,” an intellectual movement that revised history to look more favorably on the South after the American Civil War. They were women from elite antebellum families that used their social and political clout to fundraise and pressure local governments to erect monuments that memorialized Confederate heroes. They also formed textbook review committees that monitored what Southern schoolchildren learned about the war. Their influential work with children created a lasting memory of the Confederate cause, and those generations grew up to be the segregationists of the Jim Crow Era in the South.
Note: At 5:05, a previous version of the video mistakenly covered Kentucky as a former Confederate state on the map. The error has been corrected.

The Ring of Fire is a band of volcanoes and frequent earthquakes that runs from New Zealand, up through Eastern Asia, across the Bering Strait and all the way down to the Southern tip of Chile. Volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis appear around the boundaries of the several, fast moving, tectonic plates that make up the region. When the plates collide, they create areas of volatility.

Psilocybe zapotecorum is a fungus with a very peculiar ecology: mostly growing out of vertical walls & scars created by landslides at elevations of 1400-2800 meters in the wet montane forests of central Mexico. (Videos in last three slides).
The habitat that this species occupies is almost always treacherous and incredibly steep, thus it's common name as one of 5 species of "derrumbe" (Spanish for "landslide) mushroom. It is also one of the most potent wild Psilocybin-containing mushroom species in the world, reportedly containing 2.6% psilocybin (and probably more). It bruises a very strong blue after being handled or touched, indicating the conversion of psilocybin to psilocin.
But the ecology here is what's mind-blowing. How does a mushroom species come to almost only grow out of vertical dirt walls at the bottom of dark canyons?
Due to the steep terrain here, which is in turn a result of the geologic setting : the Cocos tectonic plate to the South is subducting beneath the North American plate, causing a region of intense volcanism and uplift (see: Mexican Transvolcanic Belt).
This subduction zone to the South is responsible for the steep terrain, which is in turn responsible for the landslides, which coupled with the heavy and frequent rainfall (from warm moist air rising once it hits these mountains) is in turn responsible for the large amount of buried plant material in the substrate and walls of these ravines, which in turn provide an ample food source for Psilocybe zapotecorum.

Volcanic belt
A volcanic belt is a large volcanically active region. Other terms are used for smaller areas of activity, such as volcanic fields. Volcanic belts are found above zones of unusually high temperature (700-1400°C) where magma is created by partial melting of solid material in the Earth's crust and upper mantle. These areas usually form along tectonic plate boundaries at depths of 10–50 km. For example, volcanoes in Mexico and western North America are mostly in volcanic belts, such as the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt that extends 900 km from west to east across central-southern Mexico and the Northern Cordilleran Volcanic Province in western Canada.
The deeply deformed and eroded remnants of ancient volcanic belts are found in volcanically inactive regions such as the Canadian Shield. It contains over 150 volcanic belts (now deformed and eroded down to nearly flat plains) that range from 600 to 1200 million years old. These are zones of variably metamorphosed mafic to ultramafic volcanic sequences with associated sedimentary rocks that form what are known as greenstone belts. They are thought to have formed at ancient oceanic spreading centers and island arc terranes. The Abitibi greenstone belt in Ontario and Quebec, Canada is one of the world's largest greenstone belts.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy was a significant leader of the “Lost Cause,” an intellectual movement that revised history to look more favorably on the South after the American Civil War. They were women from elite antebellum families that used their social and political clout to fundraise and pressure local governments to erect monuments that memorialized Confederate heroes. They also formed textbook review committees that monitored what Southern schoolchildren learned about the war. Their influential work with children created a lasting memory of the Confederate cause, and those generations grew up to be the segregationists of the Jim Crow Era in the South.
