The Terrifying Collapse of the Plains American Indians
As the US government pushes once mighty tribes like the Comanche and Apache onto reservations, a resistance emerges in the north, led by the Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne among others. This dramatic saga features chiefs like Sitting Bull and Red Cloud, warriors like Crazy Horse, and military icons like George Custer. Gruesome violence, massacre, and removal are tragic constants in this story. This is the harrowing last stand of Native Americans on the Great Plains. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth

A note on terminology:
Wherever possible, we use specific tribe or nation names. In addressing larger groups of indigenous people on the American plains, we occasionally use the term “Indian,” as it legally refers to the indigenous people of the contiguous United States and possesses considerable legal weight with regard to United States-American Indian treaties. As such, the term also serves to focus the scope of this video, which is the 19th-century plight of indigenous plains nations vis-a-vis the US government; the indigenous plains peoples farther north and their relationship with the Canadian government would be a video for another day. Centuries before we had American Sign Language, Native sign languages, broadly known as “Hand Talk,” were thriving across North America. Hand Talk would be influential in the formation of American Sign Language. But it has largely been written out of history.
One of these Hand Talk variations, Plains Indian Sign Language, was used so widely across the Great Plains that it became a lingua franca — a universal language used by both deaf and hearing people to communicate among tribes that didn’t share a common spoken language. At one point, tens of thousands of indigenous people used Plains Indian Sign Language, or PISL, for everything from trade to hunting, conflict, storytelling, and rituals.
But by the late 1800s, the federal government had implemented a policy that would change the course of indigenous history forever: a violent boarding school program designed to forcibly assimilate indigenous children into white American culture — a dark history that we’re still learning more about to this day.
Because of a forced “English-only” policy, the boarding school era is one of the main reasons we lost so many Native signers — along with the eventual dominance of ASL in schools for the deaf.
Today, there are just a handful of fluent PISL signers left in the US. In the piece above we hear from two of these signers who have dedicated their lives to studying and revitalizing the language. They show us PISL in action, and help us explore how this ancient language holds centuries of indigenous history.
Note: The headline on this piece has been updated.

Previous headline: Before American Sign Language, we had "Hand Talk"

Ancient Life on the Great Plains
The Great Plains are well-known for their indigenous traditions but also have a rich history that spans over ten thousand years. Contrary to what some people think, the plains were not a backwater but a rich and flourishing area with a diverse array of cultures that drew in outside influence and people and interacted with their neighbors. Join us as we explore the pre-columbian history of the Great Plains. A big thanks to my patrons for selecting this episode topic!

America: Discovering The Vast Great Plains
In a country where bustling cities are the centre of the universe for millions of people, more of the actual land mass of the United States of America is made up of the Great Plains. When millions in the city leave to escape and reconnect with the natural world, the forests, deserts, and coastlines of places like the National Parks become crowded, with civilisation finding something calming in outdoors. In the southern Great Plains, filmmaker Jeff finds a mix of small towns, grassland reserves, and long stretches of highway.

There are a lot of Americans these days. But despite being the world's third largest country by population, there exists a huge area in the northern part of the contiguous USA that is pretty empty. And this is despite the fact that Canada has two major Canadian cities even farther north. So why don't more Americans live in the Empty North?

The Great Plains - America's Lingering Wild
Shot in High Definition by NET's national documentary team, Great Plains -- America's Lingering Wild will feature Michael Forsberg making photographs on location in some of the most remote places in the Plains. Viewers will get an up-close look at how Forsberg endures the harsh conditions necessary to capture rare photographs of elusive species of birds, mammals, fish and amphibians that inhabit the region. The program will draw on Forsberg's bank of tens of thousands of photographs, in addition to the 150 that were published in the book, and will enlist historical images and motion pictures to help tell the story of the transformation of the Great Plains. Along the way viewers will meet people who care deeply about the Plains -- from wildlife biologists and ranchers to school kids who are...

The Law Behind the Great Plains' Giant Square Plots
If you fly over the Great Plains today, giant squares of land immediately stand out. Many of these are the 160-acre plots forged out of the prairie by 19th-century pioneers, a legacy of the Homestead Act of 1862.

If you’ve ever been to, or lived in, or even flown over the central swath of North America, then you’ve seen the remnants of what was a uniquely fascinating environment. Scientists call it the Western Interior Seaway, and at its greatest extent, it ran from the Caribbean Sea to the Canadian Arctic.
Thanks to Dmitry Bogdanov, Nobu Tamura, C.R. Scotese, NASA and the many others listed throughout the video for making their images available to use.
Produced for PBS Digital Studios.

Along the way viewers will meet people who care deeply about the Plains -- from wildlife biologists and ranchers to school kids who are using the book in their classroom studies. Coming this Fall to NET Nebraska.
