Goryeo Gayo(고려가요): Korean folk song at the Goryeo Dynasty
Goryeo Gayo(고려가요) is a kind of Korean folk song at the Goryeo Dynasty(918~1392). These 2 clips are from the movie, A Frozen Flower(쌍화점; Ssanghwajeom). Unlike other Korean poems or songs, the words of Goryeo Gayo are very simple and frank. Gasiri(가시리) is a song of farewell, and Ssanghwajeom(쌍화점) is a song of love affairs. I hope you like them~ :)

00:26 Early History
01:25 Three Kingdoms of Korea
02:24 Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty
03:47 Korean Empire and Japanese Occupation
04:45 Division and Korea War
05:29 Modern Korea
In 2333 BCE, Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom, was established in northern Korea, while the Jin state occupied the southern part of Korea by the 3rd century BC.
In 108 BCE, the Han Dynasty invaded the kingdom and installed four commanderies in northern Korea. Three of the commanderies fell within a few decades, except the Lelang Commandery.
The Three Kingdoms of Korea comprises Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje. In the early 6th century, Silla’s power extended across the Korean Peninsula.
By the 640s, Silla allied with the Tang dynasty of China to conquer Baekje and later Goguryeo, unifying the central and southern parts of the Korean Peninsula into Unified Silla. Meanwhile, the northern part was under the control of Balhae, founded by King Go.
In 918, Goryeo was founded as the successor of Goguryeo, gradually unifying most of the Korean peninsula.
Following the Mongol invasions of Korea from 1230 to 1270, Goryeo existed as a vassal state and compulsory ally of the Mongol-ruled Yuan dynasty in China.
After a coup, General Yi Seong-gye overthrew the Goryeo dynasty and, in 1392, established the Joseon dynasty.
From 1592 to 1598, Joseon suffered from the great destruction of the Japanese invasions.
In the 19th century, Joseon adopted a harsh isolationist policy, for which it became known as the “Hermit Kingdom.” However, Joseon was soon forced to open its borders, leading to an era of Japanese imperial rule.
In 1897, the Joseon dynasty proclaimed the Korean Empire (1897–1910). In 1910, Japan formally annexed Korean Empire which was then officially named Chōsen.
After the end of World War II with the unconditional surrender of Japan, in 1945, Korea was partitioned along the 38th parallel with the north under Soviet occupation and the south under US occupation.
The politics of the Cold War resulted in the 1948 establishment of two sovereign states, North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea.
In 1950, the Korean War broke out when Soviet-backed North Korea invaded South Korea and ended without a formalized peace treaty. The Korean Peninsula remained divided by the Korean Demilitarized Zone up to the present day.
In 2018, the Panmunjom Declaration was signed between the Supreme Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, and the President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, announcing that they would work to officially end the Korean long-lasting conflict.
Is there any chance that North Korea and South Korea will be reunified into a single Korean sovereign state?

찬란했던 고려의 귀환...건국 1100주년 기념 "대고려전 918•2018"
The National Museum of Korea is holding a special exhibition to celebrate 11-hundred years since the founding of the Goryeo Dynasty.
The museum hoped to display the Statue of Wang Geon, which belongs to North Korea, but it is still waiting for Pyeongyang to lend the statue to Seoul.
Yoon Jung-min provides a glimpse of what to expect.
2018 marks 11-hundred years since the medieval Korean kingdom of Goryeo was founded. To commemorate the anniversary, the National Museum of Korea is hosting a special exhibition "Goryeo: The Glory of Korea" from December 4th until March 3rd next year.
The exhibition introduces masterpieces and items used in the royal palace as well as pieces of Buddhist art.
Founded in 918, Goryeo prospered on the Korean peninsula until 1392.
The dynasty traded with foreign countries and was so well known to foreigners that the roots of the word "Korea" come from the word "Goryeo."
"Amid the rapidly changing situation in East Asia, Goryeo lasted as a kingdom for 475 years. To celebrate 11-hundred years since its foundation, 450 relics from museums and institutions around the world have been brought all the way to Seoul for this exhibition."
The exhibition shows the empire's artistic accomplishments through paintings, pottery and sculptures which were made from the delicate touch of the craftsmen of the time.
As Buddhism prospered, Goryeo left many pieces of religious art, such as the painting of the Amitabha Buddha.
"It was impressive to witness the technology and culture of Goryeo. I was proud. It's good that I saw what I'd learned in textbooks right before my eyes."
An empty glass case sits right next to the statue of Master Huirang,... who was a spiritual mentor of Wang Geon, the founder of Goryeo.
The national museum originally planned to display the Statue of Wang Geon which belongs to North Korea,... but the statue is still in Pyeongyang right now.
During the first inter-Korean summit, South Korean President Moon Jae-in asked his North Korean counterpart Kim Jong-un to send cultural relics for the exhibition from the North, including the statue.
Chairman Kim agreed to cooperate then, but Pyeongyang has not sent the relics yet.
The museum left the space empty in the hope that the relics can be added some time during the exhibition.

#korea #koreanhistory #kdrama #goryeo #history #한국사 #historyofkorea (episode 10)
The kingdom of Goryeo (고려, 高麗) was founded in 918. It unified the Korean Peninsula by subjugating Silla 신라 and Hubaekje 후백제. The name Korea is derived from the name of Goryeo. It was first used in the 5th century when Goguryeo (37 BC - 668 AD) shortened its name to Goryeo. Goryeo was established by Wang Geon 왕건, later Taejo of Goryeo.
In this episode, we will first focus on Gwangjong (광종, 光宗), the fourth son of Wang Geon. We will focus on the years 949 to 1019. Gwanjong enacted multiple reforms, like the slave emancipation law (노비안검법) and he instituted the national civil service examination to expel civil officers who gained positions because of their family ties instead of the competence. Gwangjong also named Goryeo an empire and himself emperor. Gwangjong is also known for his bloody purges…
Next, we will discuss an important conflict in Goryeo’s history: the Goryeo-Khitan wars (고려-거란 전쟁) or Goryeo-Liao dynasty wars. We will look at the formidable negotiation skills of Seo Hui (서희), the rebellion of Gang Jo (강조), the assassination of Mokjong (목종) and the military skills of Gang Gam Chan (강감찬) in the Battle of Gwiju (귀주대첩, 龜州大捷).
Correction: Gyeongjong reigned from 975 to 981.

#korea #koreanhistory #kdrama #goryeo #history #한국사 #historyofkorea (episode 13)
The kingdom of Goryeo (고려, 高麗) was founded in 918. The name Korea is derived from the name Goryeo. Goryeo was established by Wang Geon, later Taejo of Goryeo (877-943, r.918-943, 왕건 王建).
In this final episode, we will focus on the final years of Goryeo from 1216 to 1392. Many events take place during this period. The most important is the invasion of Goryeo by the Mongols, who then founded the Yuan empire. There were 6 Mongol campaigns against Goryeo. It ended with Goryeo becoming a vassal state of the Mongol Yuan empire. The Yuan and Goryeo also tried to invade Japan on two occasions and both were unsuccessful.
This video will explore into detail the different Mongol campaigns, with some battles on Korean soil, like the battle of Cheoinsanseong Fortress and the royal family move from Kaesong to Ganghwa Island. The Mongol left a lot of destruction and death in Goryeo which led to its eventual downfall.
I will look into all Goryeo kings of this period, most of which met tragic ends. With all this chaos and turmoil, no wonder the Goryeo Dynasty collapsed. A new dynasty rose from its ashes: the Joseon Dynasty.
Some figures and events explored in this video: Gojong
