STORYLINE:
Haitian rebels in Gonaive declared their independence on Thursday, announcing a president for the central plateau region of Arbonite, which they say, is now independent of Haiti and the government of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Butteur Metayer, who led an uprising in the town two weeks ago attended a large rally in the central square of Gonaive and declared himself president.
Several thousand people marched through the streets of Gonaive just before the rally, brandishing guns, machetes and anti-Aristide placards.
Metayer, flanked by Guy Phillipe, a former Port-Au-Prince Police Chief accused of plotting a coup attempt in 2002, said they would hold free elections once Aristide was out of office and promised to march on Port-Au-Prince "in the near future."
It''''s unclear how much support the rebels have in the region, which is populated by more than 200,000 people.
Observers say as many as 5,000 people attended the march through Gonaive and the following rally.
