Renowned romance novelist Chiung Yao has passed away at the age of 86. The author was found dead in her Tamsui residence on Tuesday afternoon, where she had taken her own life. Over the course of her decades-long career, the writer touched the lives of countless readers in the Chinese-speaking world, as well as dozens of actors that starred in the TV adaptations of her works. Fans and friends have taken to social media to share their memories with Chiung Yao and bid her farewell.

This is my final decision. My time has come and life will not get better than it is.
Smiling at the cameras, famed author Chiung Yao records her final public message. On Dec. 4, the writer was found dead in her residence in New Taipei’s Tamsui District, where she had taken her life. Her passing came as a shock to many.
Kao Chin Su-mei
Lawmaker (Independent)
Chiung Yao was the creator of the first dramas that Taiwan co-produced with China, “Four Loves” and “Three Flowers.” I have been very lucky to have worked with her and her husband, I’m thankful for the opportunities they gave me and I hope they are both happy together on the other side.
Many artists have mourned Chiung Yao’s death on social media, including Chinese actor Zhao Wei and Taiwanese actors Ruby Lin and Alec Su, all of whom who rose to fame after starring in “My Fair Princess.” Taiwanese actor Brigitte Lin says she will always remember her as a strong woman.
Chang Man-chuan
Author
The news of her passing came at 1:22 p.m. Her husband’s lucky number was 22, so I think it’s a sign of the loving connection they had.
Police responded to Chiung Yao’s suicide at 1:22 in the afternoon, a number that author Chang Man-chuan says is symbolic for its ties to Chiung Yao’s late husband Ping Hsin-tao. Through their lives, the husband-and-wife duo established Crown Culture Corporation, a publishing house that worked with renowned writers such as Eileen Chang, Sanmao and Amy Cheung. Many of their works were adapted to television, starring more than 100 famous actors. In addition, Chiung Yao owned three film and television companies, with a value of some NT$3 billion.
Chiung Yao’s body has been taken to the Second Funeral Parlor in Taipei, and is due to be incinerated on Friday. She decided to not hold a public farewell ceremony, making for a quiet and tranquil end for the literary icon.

Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

Is Taiwan a Country or Part of China?
A look at the complex political situation on the island of Taiwan. The island of Taiwan is administered by the Republic of China, which lost the Chinese Civil War to the Communists which control the mainland to this day, proclaiming the People's Republic of China in 1949.
Both the ROC and the PRC claim to be the legitimate government of China. Taiwan is a de facto independent country but is not a member of the United Nations since being replaced in 1971 by the PRC.
The current situation is stuck in a stalemate with the two ways of resolving the dispute (unification and independence) both seeming very unlikely to happen any time soon.

Newest version of China’s Apple Maps shows ‘Taiwan Province’ over island of Taiwan|Taiwan News
An updated version of Apple Maps didn’t get much fanfare than usual in Taiwan, but across the Strait, Weibo’s top search result: Taiwan Province, became a hot topic. A peek inside China’s new version of Apple Maps shows what the commotion is all about: the words Taiwan Province are written over the island of Taiwan. And member of the public on both sides of the Strait were more than happy to share their views on this contentious issue.
On February 27, Weibo’s top search rankings had over three million results for a familiar yet controversial name: Taiwan Province. This contentious name’s rise to number one on the charts caught Taiwanese off-guard. A look inside the iPhone’s recently updated Apple Maps for China’s market shows what the fuss is all about: “Taiwan Province” is written over ...

Shark Fishery Images from Taiwan, Province of China Underline Global Threat | Pew
New images from a fishing port in Taiwan, Province of China underline the threat to sharks around the world. Fishermen kill up to 73 million sharks annually in order to satisfy the demand for shark fin soup. While the scale of the trade in Taiwan, Province of China is massive, globally it is just the fourth largest fisher of sharks, after Indonesia, India and Spain.

John Cena apologises for saying Taiwan is a country amid backlash
The Fast & Furious star and wrestler John Cena has apologised for calling Taiwan ‘a country’ in an interview he gave to a Taiwanese broadcaster this month.
Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/guardianwiressub
‘I made a mistake. I love and respect Chinese people,’ Cena said to his 600,000 fans on his Chinese Weibo account. The controversy began when he told the Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS in Mandarin ‘Taiwan is the first country that can watch’ his latest film, Fast & Furious 9. China sees Taiwan as a part of its own territory, and rejects any reference to the self-governed island as an independent state.

Taiwan Province
Taiwan Province is one of the two administrative divisions of the Republic of China that are officially referred to as "provinces". The province covers approximately 69% of the actual-controlled territory of the ROC, with around 31% of the total population.
Geographically it covers the majority of the island of Taiwan as well as almost all of its surrounding islands, the largest of which are the Penghu archipelago, Green Island, Xiaoliuqiu Island and Orchid Island. Taiwan Province does not cover territories of the special municipalities of Kaohsiung, New Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Taipei, and Taoyuan, all of which are located geographically within the main island of Taiwan. It also does not include the counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, which are located alongside the southeast coast of mai...

Taiwan forces Qatar to remove Chinese province reference on FIFA World Cup identification card
Taiwan objected strongly to Qatar's move after it listed as a 'province of China' in an online application form ahead of this year's FIFA World Cup and forced it rectify the 'error'. This after the dropdown menu on the website to apply for Hayya card had showed 'Taiwan, Province of China'. The listing had angered Taiwanese officials who then requested organisers to change the name to 'Taiwan' following which Qatar rectified the 'error'. Watch this video to know more.

I think this is just them getting excited over nothing. In the real world, it’s a simple matter that we don’t belong to them.
Member of public
Over there they have their own political reasons, so we can’t be too demanding because we don’t have any control over what they do.
Compared to flabbergasted Taiwanese, many Chinese internet users were so excited about the change that they posted comments online. One said the name should’ve been like this all along while another was happy to announce that the maps of AutoNavi Software and Baidu were updated to show Taiwan Province as well. But then some Chinese netizens took a self-mocking approach. One user pointed out that Apple is surely clever enough to have two different names for Taiwan: one within the Great Firewall and one outside of it. And another user reminded readers that in the virtual world he used to falsely claim that an entertainment star he had a crush on was his girlfriend. So, he believes Chinese are essentially lying to themselves.
Hong Kong citizen
At the end of the day China’s market is quite big, with many people having their investments there and people are doing business in China. So, sometimes you have no choice but to do what they want to do.
The data for Apple Maps is primarily provided by Dutch location technology company TomTom. But China’s government policy has put restrictions into place, which has resulted in Apple Maps having two data suppliers in the Chinese market: China’s own AutoNavi Software and Hong Kong’s MapKing. But in other countries Apple Maps still shows Taiwan, without the word “Province” alongside it. It seems that even in map software, there seems to be “one Taiwan with respective interpretations.”

China sees Taiwan as a part of its own territory, and rejects any reference to the self-governed island as an independent state.

It also does not include the counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, which are located alongside the southeast coast of mainland China and administered as a separate Fujian Province.

The Philippines occupies a strategic position in the Pacific Ocean, as it sits close to Taiwan and its main bottlenecks. In particular the Philippines controls the southern end of the Bashi channel, which puts the Philippines in a position to make a Chinese invasion of Taiwan much more difficult. This chokepoint is one of China's main strategic weakness, especially in view of of the possible confrontation with the US. For this reason the Philippines, which now host new US bases, are in a position to halt an invasion of Taiwan. In this video we will analyze US and China's reliance on this strait and we will try to answer two major questions...

Also, Reuters did a similar speculative piece using some really compelling visuals: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/taiwan-china-wargames/
Ian Easton’s research using PLA internal documents was a strong foundation for my reporting on this: https://project2049.net/wp-content/...

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. Neighbouring countries include the People's Republic of China (PRC) https://www.vidypedia.com/post/china to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south. The main island of Taiwan has an area of 35,808 square kilometres (13,826 sq mi), with mountain ranges dominating the eastern two-thirds and plains in the western third, where its highly urbanised population is concentrated. Taipei is the capital and largest metropolitan area. Other major cities include New Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, Tainan and Taoyuan. With 23.7 million inhabitants, Taiwan is among the most densely populated countries, and is the most populous country and largest economy that is not a member of the United Nations (UN).
Taiwanese indigenous peoples settled the island of Taiwan around 6,000 years ago. In the 17th century, partial Dutch colonization opened the island to mass Han immigration. After the brief Kingdom of Tungning in parts of the southern and western areas of the island, the island was annexed in 1683 by the Qing dynasty of China, and ceded to the Empire of Japan in 1895. Following the surrender of Japan in 1945, the Republic of China, which had overthrown and succeeded the Qing in 1911, took control of Taiwan on behalf of the World War II Allies. The resumption of the Chinese Civil War led to the loss of the mainland to the Communist Party of China and the flight of the ROC government to Taiwan in 1949. Although the ROC government continued to claim to be the legitimate representative of China, since 1950 its effective jurisdiction has been limited to Taiwan and numerous smaller islands. In the early 1960s, Taiwan entered a period of rapid economic growth and industrialisation called the "Taiwan Miracle". In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the ROC transitioned from a one-party military dictatorship to a multi-party democracy with a semi-presidential system.
Taiwan's export-oriented industrial economy is the 21st-largest in the world, with major contributions from steel, machinery, electronics and chemicals manufacturing. Taiwan is a developed country, ranking 15th in GDP per capita. It is ranked highly in terms of political and civil liberties, education, health care and human development.
The political status of Taiwan remains uncertain. The ROC is no longer a member of the UN, having been replaced by the PRC in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official ties with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See. International organisations in which the PRC participates either refuse to grant membership to Taiwan or allow it to participate only on a non-state basis. Taiwan is a member of the World Trade Organization, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and Asian Development Bank under various names. Nearby countries and countries with large economies maintain unofficial ties with Taiwan through representative offices and institutions that function as de facto embassies and consulates. Domestically, the major political division is between parties favouring eventual Chinese unification and promoting a Chinese identity contrasted with those aspiring to independence and promoting Taiwanese identity, although both sides have moderated their positions to broaden their appeal.

Taiwan is a place of incredible variety. The tiny island’s natural beauty is a concentration of some of Asia’s most spectacular features. To the east, there are sheer cliffs with mountain peaks, plateaus and hot springs. To the south, you’ll find sandy beaches, coral reefs and lagoons.
Although the Taiwanese live in a high-tech world, they are still firmly anchored by ancient traditions. During the course of his life, Lin Liang-tai has created many elaborately adorned wooden boats. But they’re not built to last, as they’re destined for Taiwan’s legendary Wang Ye Festival. As part of the temple ceremony to honor the goddess of the sea, a 10-meter boat is blessed, loaded with offerings and pulled through the village down to the beach. There, it’s set alight, burning any evil spirits that might be lurking about the place.
Shrimps are all the rage in Taiwan. In large halls across the entire island, shrimps can be fished out of huge tanks and put straight on the barbecue. Zhan Jia-ming runs one of these popular shrimp halls, and tips bucketloads of fresh shrimps into the tanks every hour.
Oysters are a mainstay of Taiwanese cuisine, whether boiled, fried or made into oyster sauce. On the west coast, oyster farms sustain entire village communities. In Fangyuan, we see one oyster farmer still using traditional methods to harvest his oysters. He drives ox-drawn carts onto the tidal flats, just as it has been done for generations. In the fishing village of Dongshi, several tons of oysters are harvested, opened and processed every day.
Taiwan’s relations with the mainland have often been strained since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Beijing regards the island as part of its territory. Tensions have been on the rise in recent times. Tsai Jin-lu is a committed birdwatcher. For years, he’s documented his rare bird sightings in the Aogu Wetlands Forest Park on the western coast of Taiwan. But these days, his binoculars are frequently trained on something much bigger, up in the skies above. That’s because this is where the Taiwan carries out fighter jet exercises almost every day.

Chinese missiles are dangerously flying over Taiwan, and China’s armed forces are conducting military exercises near the island. An exercise that could turn into a full-scale invasion by the army of communist China and result in a third world war for all mankind.
What was the history of China’s relations with Taiwan, and why did such tensions arise between the two countries?

The Philippines occupies a strategic position in the Pacific Ocean, as it sits close to Taiwan and its main bottlenecks. In particular the Philippines controls the southern end of the Bashi channel, which puts the Philippines in a position to make a Chinese invasion of Taiwan much more difficult. This chokepoint is one of China's main strategic weakness, especially in view of of the possible confrontation with the US. For this reason the Philippines, which now host new US bases, are in a position to halt an invasion of Taiwan. In this video we will analyze US and China's reliance on this strait and we will try to answer two major questions. Why is the Bashi Channel so important in the scenario of an invasion of Taiwan? How does this influence a possible US - China conflict?

What happens if China invades Taiwan? Here’s how the start of World War 3 might go down.
For this video I leaned on some excellent interviews and research form:
Oriana Skylar Mastro: https://fsi.stanford.edu/people/oriana-skylar-mastro
Michael O’Hanlon: https://www.brookings.edu/experts/michael-e-ohanlon/
Also, Reuters did a similar speculative piece using some really compelling visuals: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/taiwan-china-wargames/
Ian Easton’s research using PLA internal documents was a strong foundation for my reporting on this: https://project2049.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Chinas-Top-Five-War-Plans_Ian_Easton_Project2049.pdf
