Glen Rice began with an incredible college basketball career at the University of Michigan leading the team to the first and only NCAA Championship in program history. After this, he would be drafted 4th overall, by the Miami Heat in their second year of existence where he would be the first star in team history leading them to their first playoff appearances and winning season alongside guys like Rony Seikaly and Steve Smith. After the 1995 season, Pat Riley took over in Miami and his first move was a blockbuster trade that sent Rice to the Charlotte Hornets for Alonzo Mourning.
In Charlotte, Rice would have the best years of his career alongside guys like Larry Johnson, Anthony Mason and Vlade Divac, where in his three years, he would get 3 consecutive all star selections, and NBA all star game MVP, and two playoff appearances, while finishing 3rd in the league in scoring in 1997. During the lockour season in 1999, Rice would be involved in another blockbuster trade, when he was shipped to the powerhouse Los Angeles Lakers for Eddie Jones, where he would be paired with Shaquille O’neal and Kobe Bryant. And it would work as he helped bring a championship to the Lakers in 2000. The rest of Rice’s career saw him bounce around from the Knicks, to the Rockets, to the Clippers before calling it quits in 2004.
Rice would retire from the league as a top 5 3 point shooter of all time and finish his career with the 8th most points scored in the 90s, his game was ahead of his time and with some of the players getting inducted to the hall of fame, Glen Rice is someone who seems like they have the resume for such an honour, but only time will tell for G-Money, Glen Rice.

Not many players can say they had a performance so amazing that even Michael Jordan couldn’t help but cheer from the bench with his arms raised. Yet, that’s what Glen Rice did at the 1997 NBA All-Star Game. However, if that performance is the only thing that comes to your mind when you think of the forward, you are selling him short.
Let me remind you or even introduce you to Glen Rice in the second installment of the Retro NBA series. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
In their first season in the league, 1988-1989, the Miami Heat, as is usually the case with most expansion teams, were dreadful. Finishing with a league-worst 15–67 win-loss record, they started to prepare for the 1989 Draft, hoping to snatch a player they can build their team around. Picking fourth, they found a gem.
In Michigan’s NCAA tournament run of that year, Rice's six-game stretch had been mind-bending. He had an NCAA tournament record of 184 points in those six games - a 30.7 points per game average. It's a record that still stands today. This phenomenal performance was ultimately capped off in the best possible way by winning the title.
Coming to the NBA The forward wasted no time making his presence felt in Miami, averaging 13.6 points per game, though management was somewhat worried by his three-point accuracy - 24.6% albeit on low shot attempts.
Any worries, however, disappeared in his second season, when he drastically improved from deep, connecting on 38.6% on 2 an a half attempts. A huge boost in just a season.
Oh, and also, his points-per-game average rose to 17.4
Despite the promising start at an individual level, the Heat failed to make the playoffs in Rice’s first two years with the team.
But the forward made sure that wouldn’t be the case next season, when he broke the 20-point-per-game mark for the first time in his NBA career and started to catch the eye of even casual fans. On April 11th, he went off for 46 points and 9 rebounds against the Orlando Magic in a 105-101 Heat win, going 4-8 from three-point land.
His play that year was among the key reasons why the Heat made the Playoffs for the first time. Their reward? A first-round sweep by the eventual champions, the Chicago Bulls.
Over the next three years, Rice would continue to ball, especially from deep. From the start of the 1991-1992 season to the end of 1994-95, he would average 20.3 points and 39.3% from beyond the arc. In this period, he was also an underrated rebounder. 5.0 boards per game at his size isn't something that should be overlooked in the physical early-to-mid 90s. It should be mentioned that he missed just one of 246 games as well - you know what some coaches say: "The best ability is availability".
Despite his team’s mixed performances – missing the playoffs in 1993 and 1995, as well as losing in the first round to the Hawks in 1994, it was precisely the 1994-1995 when the forward announced himself as a sharpshooter. First, in February, despite not being named an All-Star, he was part of the Three-Point Contest, in which he defeated no other than Reggie Miller in the final round and won the shootout.
Then, two months later, once again against the Magic, he exploded for a career-high 56 points the most points scored by any player that season. The forward was on fire going 20-27 from the field, including 7-8 from three.
With 22.3 points per game that season, he ranked 9th in the league.
Then, a surprise. Just when almost everybody in Miami felt that Rice was on the road to become perhaps the greatest player in franchise history, new Coach/GM Pat Riley traded him to the Charlotte Hornets in a package for Alonzo Mourning.
Rice took it in stride and used the most of the new opportunity,
finally becoming an All-Star in 1996.
But it would be the following season when he showed what he truly was capable of.
Performances such as the one against the Houston Rockets in which he carried his team to the win with 42 points, 8 boards, and four assists are the reason why his scoring average rose to 26.8 points
Sure enough, Rice once again made the All-Star team. But nobody, perhaps even he himself, knew what he was cooking at Gund Arena in Cleveland.
Coming on as a substitute, Rice had just two points in the first half.
But Then, a barrage. In the third quarter, the forward was feeling it, going off for 20 points. Not even Jordan and the other East All-Stars on the bench could hide their joy.
Rice’s 20 points in a quarter and 24 points in a half set the records for an all star game at that time.
In the 132-120 victory for the East, Rice had a game-high 26. He was 4-7 from deep and 10-24 overall.
