New Comprehensive School (1959) - Holland Park School Opening
"Super School Opening", 1958. Original British Pathe newsreel.
"A country-like setting in the heart of London, that's the good fortune of Holland Park school, built to accommodate 2,000 boys and girls. They're getting education under ideal conditions"
We see Lady Norman opening the school officially in the main hall. We're told the equipment in the school cost £60,000 and is amongst the best in the country.
A girl dissects a dog-fish in a school lab, we also see a room of girls learning to type and a shot of boys playing waterpolo in the school swimming pool.
Note: According to the Holland Park School Wikipedia page, notable alumni includes Polly Toynbee, Omid Djalili, Miquita Oliver, Jasper Harris, Flora Fraser and Matthew Symonds.

What is Dar e Arqam?
Being submissive and humble to the will of Almighty ALLAH, we relate this institution to the very first educational centre of Islam, “Dar-e-Arqam” established at Hazrat Arqam Bin Arqam’s house in the plains of Koh-e-Safa by Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W). The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) gets his believers gathered in a small house and laid the foundation of rich civilization that produced marvelous blessings and countless human role models.
Contrary to the present Soulless system of education based on aimless, materialistic and secular approach, the edifice of Dar-e-Arqam System of education is constructed with the bricks, stones and cement of Faith, Sincerity and Sublime Aims and is beautified with active modern scientific ideas about education to equip the innocent saplings of the future tree, with the latest branches of learning so that they can converse with the teachings of the Holy Quran and Sunnah side by side with the modern education, and when grown up can raise the status of “Ummah” and take them out of the abyss of darkness.
History of Dar-e-Arqam Schools
The first Dar-e-Arqam School was established in Sargodha in 1991. Then, like minded people gathered and spread the rays of knowledge in a very short time. These schools are progressing and increasing in number tremendously. Right now, The Dar-e-Arqam school is one of the largest growing school systems with more than 170,000 students and more than 660 branches all over Pakistan. This appreciation and recognition by the society is more because of its unique way of imparting modern education with Islamic perspective. Alhamdulillah, many achievements have been made so far in the different areas of curricular and co-curricular activities. The journey towards excellence is on very rapidly and every achievement is a beacon of light and source of inspiration. The practical problems are no doubt there but they don’t come in the way of our enthusiastic, strict and dedicated team of selfless and honest workers. These challenges are like opportunities for us and gives us guidance and tips for future planning.

Comprehensive school
A comprehensive school is a state school that does not select its intake on the basis of academic achievement or aptitude. This is in contrast to the selective school system, where admission is restricted on the basis of selection criteria. The term is commonly used in relation to England and Wales, where comprehensive schools were introduced from 1965. About 90% of British pupils attend comprehensive schools. Comprehensive schools correspond broadly to the German Gesamtschule and to the public high school in the United States and Canada.
Comprehensive schools are primarily about providing an entitlement curriculum to all children without selection either due to financial considerations or attainment. A consequence of that is a wider ranging curriculum that includes practical subjects such...

Teachers TV: Improving Boys' Literacy in Wales - Barry Comprehensive School
Teachers demonstrate their successful strategies for improving literacy in teenage boys at Barry Comprehensive School in Wales.
The school has been recognised for its achievements in improving literacy, and teachers Jenny Conway and Sian Morgan show how the strategy works in the classroom.
They make sure they provide frequent opportunities for its students to read and write and take time to understand their learning styles. Appropriate forms of assessment are used and they encourage positive role models within the school.
There is also an insight into the role of libraries in the campaign to improve boys' literacy.

Have you ever thought about doing mission in schools? Don’t know where to start? Then this is the right seminar for you! Our schools are a natural mission field, one which is vital for reaching and discipling young people today. Attendees will learn the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of schools work, and be given the chance to consider how their skills can impact and reach this new generation.

Anna is part of the Recruitment team for the Pais Movement in the British Isles, an organisation that provides a free mission year for Christian young adults. She is passionate about seeing young people empowered to share Jesus in their world! Currently based in Burnley, Anna is originally from Northern Ireland, you’ll be able to tell as soon as you hear her. She loves a good laugh and also drinks abnormal amounts of tea that could rival any English person (or so she says).
Bev has experienced both the curricular and pastoral aspects of secondary school life, having been both Head of RE and Head of Year. She jumped the teaching ‘ship’ in 2017 and worked for Spring Harvest Holidays as programme manager at Le Pas Opton, before hopping across to work with Youth for Christ as Head of Schools Work in 2019. She lives in Bournemouth, and, In between Youth for Christ commitments, studies theology and likes to dabble in writing for children. And eat chocolate.
The Youth Evangelism Conference is an initiative of British Youth for Christ, delivered in partnership with Hope, Alpha, Urban Saints, Scripture Union, Pais, The Church of England, Evangelical Alliance and The Message.

A consequence of that is a wider ranging curriculum that includes practical subjects such as design and technology and vocational learning that was less common or non-existent in grammar schools. Providing economic post 16 provision becomes more challenging for comprehensive schools because of the number of courses needed to cover a broader curriculum with comparatively fewer students. This is why schools have tended to get larger and many local authorities organised secondary education into 11–16 schools with the post 16 provision provided by Sixth Form and Further Education Colleges. Comprehensive schools do not select their intake on the basis of academic achievement or aptitude but there are demographic reasons why the attainment profiles of different schools vary considerably. In addition, government initiatives such as the City Technology Colleges and Specialist schools programmes made the comprehensive ideal less certain.
